How to Remove a Broken Bolt Using a Left Hand Drill Bit & Bolt Extractor
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Whether it's discovering a broken bolt or it happening with your own hands, it's incredibly stressful but with the right tools, the likelihood of you getting it out is greatly improved.
In this episode I'll walk through on using the left handed drill bit set from Harbor Freight, a center punch and a bolt extractor set from Amazon for the very fist time on a broken transmission pan bolt in our 1972 Chevy C10 transmission.

That's awesome! I usually break at least one extractor before I get a bolt out.🤣😳

Thanks for watching brother. Yeah, that's exactly the way I thought this would go knowing our luck. Fortunate for once. LOL.
Do you drill clockwise or counterclockwise?? On the harbor freight screw extractor set says to drill counterclockwise

Thank you for watching and asking. We greatly appreciate it. Yes, these drill bits are backwards compared to your normal bit. You would run it counter clockwise as if you're backing a bit out. Hope that helps.
This is great to see that they work so well. You just never know with less expensive tools. Thanks for sharing. Need to add these to my tool box now.

so you hammer in the extractor as opposed to drilling it in? Is that piece you re hammering in the same as a left handed drill bit? i m so F n lost time to pay a pro to get broken bolt out

Than you for watching and sharing the kind words. Much appreciated!
My cotter pin broke into the metal shaft so i attempted to drill it out. the titanium drill bit broke and now its stuck in the hole, does anybody know how to get that out?
so why do you need a left hand drill bit? can't you use a regular one and then use the bolt extractor?

Hi Jack. Thanks for asking. We appreciate it. It's the direction of the threads that are different. It all works together to extract it. Hope that helps.

I have a set of those, but find myself using the welder to extract them more often.

Thanks for watching Evan. We appreciate it. Yeap, that's certainly a great option. I decided to take the dive and add a small one to my list this year and I guess Santa thought I was nice after all. LOL. Now I need to teach myself how to use it. 🙂

@@SpiritedWrenchers one of the best tools you can have around the shop! Not only will it help with working on vehicles, but you can also fab up other tools and make stuff you wouldn't even have thought of before.
What’s the difference between a left hand screw extractor & a right hand? Or is there not a right hand?

Hi Whatshisface. Thank you for watching and asking. We really appreciate it. So the bits are left handed, not the extractor. The bits are fluted in a counter-clockwise direction so it doesn't tighten the broken bolt any further. It's a good first step with the hopes that it might loosen it before using an extractor. Hope that helps.

Strong work. How much pressure did you have to apply on the hand drill and how long did it take to drill? I find the bit doesn't want to bite on the bolt

Hi siegeperilous. Thank you for watching and asking. It's one where you have to have patience. I've also discovered recently that if the bolt or screw is incredibly hard steel, they won't bite. I had to start the hole with a titanium bit and then switch over. Little pressure and patience is when I was successful or you run the risk of braking the bit. Hope that helps. Cheers!

might need to use a cobalt bit - much harder than titanium or high speed stel
Would you recommend this for extracting a screw from a tailgate actuator that is stripped and stuck?

Hi 133thefallen. Thank you very much for watching our video and asking. We appreciate that. It's very difficult to say as it's dependent on the size of the screw and location. If it's big enough to drill into without hitting any electronics, it could be possible. Without seeing it, I'm cautious to advise with a certain yes. There may be better products for stripped screws.

@@SpiritedWrenchers thank you for taking the time to reply. It doesn't seem that using this would hit any electronics from what I saw. I will try it though
Why the need for left handed drill bits? Isn't a hole a hole? Thanks!

Because if it grabs the material enough to spin it during it, it will be backing it out each grab rather than tightening it
