    Amen! This, I believe is fantastic advice. I came to Salsa Dancing from a background in Lindy Hop. In Lindy Hop we learned moves and then put them together as you are saying. In Bachata class we learn by learning individual moves. In every salsa class I’ve been in we learn routines. I have so much fun dancing Lindy Hop and Bachata but when it comes to Salsa I easily get lost. You are so helpful. Thank you.

    Wonderful, Rasa! Yes, could you please please make videos with the various versions of 1 technique? I am a follower who is also learning to lead. I so recognize the truth of what you are saying. In my experience your insight is a door to freedom and creativity in dance. Please help me, help us, to find freedom from the rut and the grip of the conditioned combi's and to develop skills to be able to play and have even more fun while dancing.

    You are, right, you are right, you are right Rosa - of coarse. I ‘am’ going to do this way, your way but separate to my lessons as with most teachings, they only, only they only teach routines sooo, I do that their way and put into practice, your way - thing…. Suzy-Q. Oh yes. Thank you for this last video, it’s perfect timing for me to adjust to. A video illustrating such variations, would be amazing sooo yes, yes, yes - please Rosa I’m definitely going to do as you say. Peter (72yrs)

    as a follower also. I have learned so many routines from the divas here on youtube, and after 10 years of social dancing still feel stuck when let loose for a couple of bars. I notice that simple moves done with surprising flair, class, and individuality, rule the floor. I have no idea how men make it from beginner to free-flowing dancers. It is so hard.

    I remember my salsa instructor saying that it is easier to teach someone with no experience than to teach someone who has learnt something wrong because it is difficult to make them unlearn it. I never understood what she meant by that but you explained it so well in point no. 2 on how we should be able to separate the moves from the routine and not just learn the routine blindly without understanding the components.

    Absolutely 💯. Listen, it's impossible not to pick up bad habits along the way. But the point is to have good examples of how to change behaviour and learn faster 🥰.

    then you learn 2-3 moves as combo(s) - Lego building blocks.(in diff.ways with shuffle). she goes - he goes // she-he-she goes; basic - tap - turn +++ cradle - wave - out (basic forward-back ; tap-tap; left-hand inside turn) etc etc

    Great video, Rasa! I think you're right about teaching routines being counterproductive. But aside from what you mentioned about muscle memory, I don't think you've given a convincing argument for why classes should be taught using routines. It sounds like if you could throw out all assumptions and existing teaching methods and design something new and innovative, you would. I'd like to see what you would come up with if you did! Something I personally would like to see more of (if routines absolutely needed to stick around) would be to teach two overlapping half-routines instead of full routines. What I mean is that instead of routine consisting of say 6 moves (AxBxCxDxExF), you have 3 sets of two possible moves ((A or B)x(C or D)x(E or F)). First teach AxCxE, then teach BxDxF. Then the fun part is having the leader try to lead the different possible variations switching between the two options (ACF or BCF or ADE, etc.). I think an approach like this would help emphaize the importance of leading and following as well as help students separate out the individual moves from routines.

    I find some people have very unrealistic ideas about their ability. I would say it is better to stay in a lower level than attempt one where you cannot keep up. At the advanced level there is no time for explaining or revision, as there is in preceding levels. Go up, only when you feel mentally unchallenged by the level's content. It is art to maintaining a kind of tension; in a healthy balance between a challenge and what you feel confident in.
