How Does Your Mental State Affect Your Dancing? - Dance With Rasa

Ойын-сауық

Dancing is great for mental health, but have you ever thought about how your own mental state and frame of mind can affect your dancing? I was reflecting on this, bringing some experiences from my students and some of my own experiences to the table, to discuss how I feel that your own mental state can affect you as a dancer.
Do you agree? Let me know your own experiences in the comments, but only if you are comfortable.

Dancing has been the biggest change in my life in the past 10 years. I am so so happy that I decide to start and joined the group that I did. I feel like I have super lucky that I found my current group. It's not just the art of dancing but also the people around me that made me fall in love with this art.

The attitude of the follower is the most important part to me. I prefer followers who simply show that they enjoy the dance, and it's even better if they dare to add or emphasize their thing in the dance. To me the dance technique isn't the most important. We all have our problems, and I just have to avoid the problems of each follower. I don't care much about the looks of the followers, if they are pretty, ugly, thin, fat, young or old. A genuine smile goes far.

Sometimes a bad practice in the class or not so good dancing at the social add self-doubt and disappointment in myself afterwards. But at least now I know it's just a bad day and nothing else.

I relate to this and find that it boils down to the expectations I have set for myself and others. Often we don't even realize that we're setting expectations based on previous experiences of who was at a particular social or how I felt I danced previously, etc. I have been trying to be more mindful and take note of the expectations my mind has conjured up to have better control over my emotions that come up as a result.

I really like your videos. Such a great topic! I had put on some weight & couldn’t stand seeing myself in the mirror at the studio. One day I was doing a personal lesson with an instructor I had only done a lesson or 2 with. She kept wanting me to look in the mirror. I finally had a moment & told her how I was feeling. She was so supportive & spoke about how what we wear & how we feel effects our dancing. By the time we were done discussing this I felt much better. Over time I had this discussion with a couple of other women at the studio & discovered how many of us had been feeling that way! I will be doing a great bachata routine in a couple of days with an instructor who is much younger than me. He is totally awesome & has really focused on details making me feel so much better. We are often our own worst critics! Regarding your comment about uplifting mood, that is so true. I recently bought a t shirt that says “don’t be moody, shake your booty “.

thank you for this and all videos 🤩. I love commenting on your content because it all resonates and gives helpful suggestions that I can add to my dancer toolkit. As an HSP my mood can dictate whether it's the right kind of night for me to go out dancing or if it's better to stay in. It has taken me a while to listen to my mood rather than my fomo (missing a big social I was excited about, etc.). If I dance when I haven't processed or challenged my vulnerable emotions than it usually doesnt go well. because both the lead and i am confused about what is going on. I like to keep dance as a therapy and mentor but not as my only form of validation. Which tbh it also takes discipline to take a break rather than hoping the problems disappear with one more social.

What about heartbreak? Dancing is very intimate and it's easy to blur the lines between dance and feelings. I can see people either healing or hurting.

It's a curious point, I am sure it happens a lot, but the majority of people (at least from my conversations with the people from my class) feel that dancing is just what it is. From outside it can seem so romantic and intimate, but the reality is a connection of the length of the song and nothing else.

It can be such a wholly captivating activity that everything else disappears, there’s only the music, the people, the movement, the concentration. 😊 But what a crash into reality when the two hours lessons are over🤦🏻‍♂️ But how about fear? In routines practice I was fine- loved the challenges,- but in free practice or social, so much fear that I couldn’t even do two basics. 😔 It’s not a spectator sport so I gave up. 🤔

Don't give up,if you enjoy dancing, your confidence will grow but it takes time. It can e especially challenging if you're leading. Remember though that followers love a simple routine, lead well, than a complicated one which can feel like a battle. Hope that helps, I mainly follow.

Yes, I follow also and we prefer simple routines led well. The leads who do complicated routines usually want to show off, and do not consider how follows feel: being too rough, not looking at our facial expressions to see if we are uncomfortable, etc. Dancing is a connection with another person, as long as both people are respectful of one another and having a good time, then that’s what matters. We are not judging how complicated a routine is, if you make a mistake laugh it off, and keep trying. Don’t give up.
