Will work but you won’t get as controlled of a pattern. Also with break action SG’s as long as you have the shell base for the primer you can actually load them like muzzle loaders even without the hull

Warning to prospective new reloaders: Never use any metal that might create a spark in the vicinity of your powder charge. As Andrew demonstrated, a DIY wooden tool, brass, and aluminum are all good. Also, please keep primers in the original packaging that is designed to keep the primers separated until you use them. A stack of primers can be dangerous.

Just learned something else from you. I’ve done it once before at a survival class, but you simplified it. I’m a black powder shooter, primarily historical smoothbore. Here’s something I’ll share. If you don’t have the proper wads to keep the powder and shot in place, you can break off a piece of bread and use that. Just make a dough ball and drop it in, and tamp it down. Keep up the good work.

In a situation desperate enough to need to reload fired shells found laying around, how likely is it that someone would have new primers, powder and shot? If you know in advance to plan on needing the components to reload…just bring a ton more factory made ammo. This IS a cool skill and I love the video. I just don’t understand when this would be done. You’d either have loaded ammo, or you would have nothing with you.

I'm kinda sceptical about the effectiveness of this. A single shot charge card doesn't seem enough to give good compression. Considering you have primers power etc I'd suggest maybe making a wad from half a wine bottle cork or something similar. I'd love to see a gel test comparison. Thanks for the video.

Knowing how to reload shotgun shells is a good skill to have. But as far as "reloading in the field for survival" I would be far more inclined to just carry more shotgun shells than to have to carry primers, powder and shot as well on the off chance I might need it. However as I stated before, it is a good thing to know how to do.

  • @saskafrass1985

I was given a box of jobber reloads a couple years back. I didn't know much about them or the guy who did it. But was assured by the guy who gave them to me that they were awesome and chronographed well.Took them on a fun range day and lined up a 2 liter bottle of water. At 20 feet the 1st shot knocked the bottle over but didn't even penetrate the plastic. Knowing something was off, I checked my barrel. The cardboard overpowder card was still in there. It was made with regular cardboard and cut very poorly with flat edges. I never tried another shell. Not saying that it is a bad idea to plan for reloading, but I will never use another person's reloads again. It seems to me that a bag or 2 of factory wads bought at the same time as the shot would be a cheap way to safely reload.

Little common sense thing here: when filling the shell with grain from the loader, just hold the loader level where you can't spill, and slap the plastic shell over it. Then flip it. (invert it) and let gravity do the work, rather than risk it spilling. You could do the same with shot, but only if you cap/blocker is secure.

Definitely awesome survival trick. Worst thing is the shot will be slightly deformed due to the thin over charge card, so the pattern won't be as good as the same shell but with a felt overcharge wad or modern plastic wad, but still 1mil% better than not having shells.

Sir, good DIY kit, Skipper! IIRC, my paternal grandfather had antique factory-made black powder shotgun reloading stuff. Some of the like is offered on E Bay. Levering primers in vs. pounding them in may be preferable. I have done a fair amount of reloading of .45 ACP & .30-06 with a Lee loader & ordinary smokeless powders. I used fixed measures to size powder loads like you do here to make sure that I never miss-loaded. Of course, if you are loading full case brass shot shells you will want to watch out for primers or cases starting to pooch out, a sign of too much powder. I was told that black powder tends to be more explosive than smokeless, & so kicks more than smokeless per unit measure.

I use regular copper coated bbs for air guns as shot and use 1oz powder & 1oz shot both measured with a shot measure and over powder and over shot cards cut from old cereal or 12 pack boxes and seal the over shot card with melted wax or tallow or a hot glue stick. I also carry lead pumpkin balls in case I need to hunt larger game like deer. Been doing it like this for over 40 years with my old Eastern Arms 12 gauge single shot only I also made the investment and got a box of 12 gauge brass which is what I usually use for this method.

It should be noted that on some hulls the primer protrudes past the base wad of the hull, and a tubular something or other would be necessary to seat the primer in that instance, or I guess one could bore a hole in the end of the stick/dowel used to insert inside the hull and drive the primer home. I really dig your videos man. The only thing I can disagree with is the over shot and over powder cards. You have it a bit backwards. Hear me out. You want a softer(shock absorber) if you will over your powder to help with that initial charge push. Then shot and then a thinner over shot card. This will help greatly with patterns. I personally have never used leather and will be trying it asap. I do however like cork for my over powder cards. Compression of the powder seems to be effective and it serves as a cushion. Thanks for the content you provide and I’m looking forward to more.
