How to regenerate DPF filter

If you get a warning light showing that the filter’s blocked, it should be possible to complete an active regeneration cycle and clear the warning light by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds over 40mph.

I love the way they added a DPF to be environmentally friendly, but then a requirement to keep them clear is to drive with high revs spewing gases out of the exhaust!!

If he would drive around with an engine flush that supposed to work while idling he could have a catastrophic engine failure as the products wash off oil from cylinder walls=no lubrication or very limited hence the advice to use some while the car idles

+Rob Dunfry - I maintain my cars to the teeth and thus I am quite happy with tighter MoT standards. Ultimately we will all benefit. The only diesel specific new thing is evidence of tampering with the DPF. There is in fact no legal requirement for a DPF to be fitted, but it's highly unlikely you'll get a car through an MoT without one. Many owners have had then removed prior to the legislation change and these people will be footing a bill for a new one. Personally I think DPFs should be fitted to DI petrol cars well - these chuck out even more small (sub ten micron) particulates than do current diesel engines.

As a service technician for a well known car manufacturer i can tell you that exhaust gas temperatures increase as you get to a maximum of 1800 rpm, after that they start to cool off as the gas flow increases to the point of reducing the temperature in the doc and dpf respectively. I have customers come in from time to time with a soot saturation indicator lamp on, i drive with the rpm at a max of 1800 and holding. Road speed has nothing to do with it. I can regen in neutral at 1800rpm if necessary. You also need to remember, some diesel vehicles won't regen if a low level of diesel fuel is present, usually below the last quarter.

Well known german car manufacturer? Anyway regenerating the DPF at low RPM or while standing still is risky because of the very high temperature reached by the DPF and if it not properly cooled it can be damaged. That's why most manufacturers recommend to regenerate the DPF on the highway like driving at constant speed.

I had service pop up, adblue, engine management and exhaust overloaded all on screen. Wouldn't do a regen when driving high revs (2 hour drive) so bought a cheap code reader and to start regen make sure 1/4 tank of fuel or more and top up adblue so error goes away. Connected the cheap reader to OBCD port and started driving until engine temp was 90 degrees. Then cleared error codes with cheap reader and few times failed and error pop up service and exhaust filter full. Kept pressing and clearing until on dash pop up exhaust cleaning. Great, few minutes later all dash error lights out and back to normal. Force a regen yourself with a cheap OBCD scanner, ad blue and patience with clear road so you can get to 3000rpm or slightly higher. Keep clearing codes when driving and it will force it eventually. Happy motoring.

The biggest problem with dpf's is people do not understand how they work, including main dealers, mechanics, youtube mechanics etc.. the systems clean themselves, the key word being themselves, they require no input from the driver, no need to drive at 70mph in reverse down the M1 to regen it. They need to be at 600/700c to regen, no matter what speed you drive you won't get that temperature, not in a car anyway. The cars ecu will inject extra fuel in order to get the temperature needed to clean it.

I've been driving DPF cars on and off since 2001. Top tier diesel is helpful. And don't get into the habit of changing up at stupidly low speeds. You don't need to use full torque, just let the revs build. I've seen people in 6th gear at 35mph. This is very very bad for your car. It doesn't even save fuel.

@@vampy625 I'm reading and seeing all kinds of variations of the DPF. Appears VW has an 11 year replacment on DPF filter, (US only). Also, I have an extended warranty on my car from VW due to the emissions issue. As mentioned, I do run my car and for long distances. Also, I don't know how many of you are using the correct oil. I use Mobile 1 ESP 5W-30W. Designed for newer diesels. I know this helps. Here are some tips I copied: Drive Faster! Contrary to popular belief, driving faster could actually save you money in the long run. A DPF regeneration can only occur when certain conditions are met such as speed, RPM and engine temperature. Unless all these conditions are met, the DPF regeneration process will not start. Driving slow and trying to save fuel might prevent a DPF regeneration. Do your homework Your vehicles owners manual should have the steps / conditions required to perform a DPF regeneration. Before you attempt a DPF make sure you are doing it correctly, unless you’re at the right speed, engine temperature and RPM a regeneration will not begin. Don’t waste your time and fuel by doing it incorrectly. If in doubt, contact your dealership. Use the right oil It’s vital that you only use low SAPs oil in any DPF equipped vehicle. Low saps oil contains lower levels of ASH, the substance which causes DPF filters to clog up. Consult your owners manual if you’re unsure on which oil to use. We’d always advise on using the manufacturers recommended oil. In VW vehicles this is VW 507.00 Engine Oil. Check our our DPF top tips page These tips are just a small selection of our DPF tips. Check out the DPF page links at the bottom of the page for our complete list of DPF top tips.

Not sure if this would help me but it's true that I mostly use my car in low speed low rev situation. I've added Liqui Moly Diesel Additive when the tank was full ...not sure if the "check engine" light triggered by this or it was random. Clearing the light via my phone is temporal as it comes back after a while(half day or so), I'm not sure if this has something to do with DPF or not so anyone any thoughts? ....dealer told me to replace the part would cost more than 500 Euros(just the part, not his work ...still if I don't want to do it, it won't cause me any problem, his words not mine)

It matters not what speed you do for how long, the whole aim is to get the dpf hot enough to turn burn off the soot,if you drive in a manner that creates a high egt like, driving it hard, motorway use, constant boost demand etc.it will passively regenerate anyway with no input from you, your car or any third party software. If you are at the point where the car is actively attempting regeneration then your soot content is already high and if it is demanding constant active regeneration then either you poodle round like an old lady,or there is a fault with with your dpf system, your software or it's pilot error, and you will never get 0% soot content, regardless of what your software or Ross tech wiki says.I perform forced regens on 4-5 cars a week.never for boy racers, white van man or mile munchers.

  • @PeterKese
    @PeterKese6 жыл бұрын

Don't listen to "REV THE SHIT OUT OF THE CAR" advice. Sure, rev it, but at really high revs, a diesel engine is going to produce more soot due to incomplete combustion, which will work against your intents - you wish to get rid of existing soot rather than create new one. - The whole point is for the exhaust gasses to get hot so that the clogged soot gets burnt. - If the exhaust is hot, it will do the unclogging even at revs below 2000 (down to 1500 RPM). Sure it is better to be on the safe side and above 2000. Also at higher revs there's going to be more hot exhaust gasses flowing through and cleaning will be faster. But I don't think going beyond 3000-3500 is necessary at all. - Make sure the engine fully warms up before revving it. - At 130 km/h it is going to produce more heat than 80 km/h even at the same RPM (i.e. different gear), because the engine must produce more power to offset the air drag. More power = more fuel = more heat. Therefore, prefer to drive fast on the highway or uphill. Using air condition will also produce extra heat. - It is said, that if you drive your car on highways a lot, no particular DPF care is necessary. - The car may itself initiate a forced unclogging cycle if necessary even in other conditions (e.g., even when driven in the city without enough revs). To to so, the car will for a while start burning extra fuel to produce more heat. It may be the case that if you stop the car while this cycle was ongoing, the ventilator (fan) in the engine will keep turning for a minute even after shutting down the car. The intent is to cool the exhaust down to avoid fire hazard in case anything might touch the hot exhaust pipes. - Apparently the dieselgate affair has some consequences for DPFs as well. There seems to be a balance (I may be wrong) between efficiency and NOx emissions. Initially, the cars were more efficient but produced too much NOx. After software change, they produce less NOx but burn a bit more fuel and apparently also produce more soot. That's not good for the DPF. It is unclear what the difference is though (hard to find useful data).

will regeneration occure normally ? when you are going lets say 2500 rpm over 2 hour drive..... on 6th gear or you need to "force" regeneration like this? (i dont have any dpf light i am just asking if its clearing itself regularely without need to force regeneration)

I was at two different Volkswagen dealers and both told me the same thing don't go over 2000 rpm otherwise the turbo comes in and puts air in and cools down the dpf. It should gain heat an then burn these nasty particles. Tested it various times with lamp on or with little higher idle speed when the dpf needs to be cleaned. Also in 5th gear at around 110 km/h. Worked fine after 10 minutes the light went of and the idle speed went to normal. Less fuel consumption then this method.

If the filter is clogged and if you ride the engine in very high revs, it can damage the turbo because the gas pressure between the turbo and the filter will be very hight.

@Name not supplied One day there will be affordable electric cars with an infrastructure but it's not today. Particulate microns can be extremely small and heat does help dispense. I also do my own work and while I only have 114,000 miles on my diesel it never has the regeneration light go on and it runs great, (I do have a software upgrade and a pipertech in the airbox). I expect one day their will be enough ash build up that I will clean DPF. To me, I just see this as maintenance, (unless I have to replace for some reason). That's another story. Bottom line, many with diesels doing a lot of short driving will have more buildup than someone like myself who drives longer distances. Interesting, there is a company in the EU who modifies Audi diesels and they really did not find extra HP with the DPF system removed...

Bear in mind Diesel is not made for short journey, and nowadays another problem is if the DPF doesn't perform a regeneration oil is getting diluted with Diesel, over 1 year and around 10.000 miles you will have a increase of 1.5-3.0 L,but the manufacturer 🤫.It has been noted on various brands Mazda,Kia, .... .
