    Excellent video! I just wish I knew of their portal years ago. I've been a Chase cardholder for years and never knew of their portal. And this after traveling for 10+ years. And when I did start getting wind of how to use the points for travel I made the mistake of getting myself trapped by their 5/24 before getting a Sapphire card. So planning my future strategy very smart by asking questions on your channel here as well as other boards. And thanks to you for being so helpful.

    Thanks! It should work as long as your account is set-up. That being said, I do remember a few accounts where it took a few days for things to get set-up properly and verified. To be safe, I would set-up accounts in advance with all the airlines that you think you might use in the future. It's usually free, so there's no harm in creating the accounts. Hope that's helpful. Is thier any any chase card i can consider to open to get most value out of chase UR points ???

  • @TripAstute

    Congratulations on your Chase Sapphire Reserve! It's a great card. You'll hear a lot of people dd more Chase cards to their collection to create a "trifecta" or "quadfecta". The reason being that certain other cards like the Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, Ink Business Preferred, Ink Business Cash, and Ink Business Unlimited also earn UR points, so you can pool the points with your Sapphire Reserve. The beauty of doing it too is that you Sapphire Reserve allows you to redeem at 1.5 cents. So a card like the Freedom Unlimited, which has an earning rate of 1.5x per dollar, actually has a true earning rate of 2.25x per dollar (1.5x1.5) when paired with the Sapphire Reserve. If you're eligible for business credit cards, the Ink Business Preferred has the highest welcome offer at 80K UR points. If you're not eligible for a business card, then it might be worth slowly getting the Chase Freedom and Freedom Unlimited so you can take advantage of the rotating bonus categories (Freedom) and flat-rate for non-bonus spend (Freedom Unlimited). Hope that's helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out or even sign-up for our free credit card consultation: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKKkrZWKmMK_YqQ.html

    I do like booking through Chase UR portal and it does allow you to enter in any partnership member numbers. I’ve always liked easy. Last summer when I booked a flight with United through the portal it didn’t allow me to pick my seats. They provided a confirmation number right away. I entered in the confirmation number in United. After about 24-48 hours, I was able to pick the seats through United (just hated the feeling “what if there weren’t 3 seats together for my family” - it all worked out though). Contrast, if you book through Barclaycard rewards, you pick the seats before you check out, however, it doesn’t seem to allow you to enter a membership number with the airline. (However that is with the LuxuryCard Titanium Card) What I liked about the Barclaycard system was that you get the points immediately as the purchases post and you do not have to wait until your next statement. Overall, I like using the Chase UR for hotel and a secondary way to book flights and Barclaycard for flights only. (Just for piece of mind of picking the seats before completing the transaction). As a note, UR didn’t allow you to pick your hotel room either. I don’t think the hotel gets the info until not that long before your booked stay. (But it all worked out) Last year was the first year I had a Sapphire Card or any rewards cards and the first time booking. I do think there could be improvements in the way the system works but it was decent and I’d do it again sometime soon.

    Hi Karen! I totally agree. That's the one thing that I don't like about the Chase Travel Portal -- the lack of visibility into normal booking details like hotel room and airline seats. There are workarounds at times, but it's definitely more confusing than booking directly with the hotel/airline. 🤓

    Which do you think is easier and better transferring points like the Chase Sapphires American Express green gold , gold rewards or the way Capital does it with the Venture cards and Barclays arrival card? which do you think is easier and better?

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    6 жыл бұрын

    Honestly, I really like the ease and speed of point transfers with Chase cards. I can research what I want to book, then initiate the points transfer from Chase (e.g., to United, Hyatt, or Southwest), and it's literally in the account in a minute or so. When I had my AMEX, it seemed to take a lot longer to transfer points, though that may have improved. The Capital One Venture and Barclaycard Arrival still offer the easiest and straightforward way to redeem points. Though I still feel like I'm usually able to get more value per point with my Chase Ultimate Rewards, but the trade-off is the amount of flexibility that you get with the flat-rate cards. 🤓

    New subscriber. I’m use to giving weekly payments to my credit card. I like going to the app, check my balance then go make a payment of the balance. Is it ok to do that? Or am I suppose to be waiting until I get a bill and pay it in full? Or am I suppose to pay in full Before I even receive a bill? Please advise. Thank you 😊

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    Hi Ana! Thanks for subscribing to the channel. It's a really great question and one that I used to wonder as well. In theory, it's not bad to prepay before your monthly bill generates (i.e., you're reducing the risk of debt while still earning your points). However, if your bill always shows a $0 or extremely low balance, it may seem like you are not using your credit, which can affect your credit score. Since payment history is a major component of your credit score, it could look like you don't have any payment history since you are paying down the balance before your statement is generated and reported to the credit agencies. My personal opinion is to let the statement generate then set your account to pay the bill in full once a month. That way, you're always clearing the statement balance, but also allowing the issuer to report that you had a balance and were responsibly paying the bill. 🤓 Hope that's helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Also, here's a Points Guys article that might be useful: thepointsguy.com/2016/11/debunking-credit-card-myths-does-paying-before-due-date-help-score/

    Many travelers prefer to transfer points to travel partners since you can often get high per point redemption rates (e.g., 3+ cents per point via Hyatt). Also, you can usually squeeze more using the travel portal instead of cash back, depending on your premium Chase card.

  • @TripAstute

    Unfortunately, no. The points earned on the Amazon Prime card can only be used on Amazon. The only cards that can transfer to a travel partner (such as Southwest Airlines) are those that earn Ultimate Rewards points. And even then, you need to have at least one premium Chase card in order to transfer the points to the travel partner.

    Yeah, the Chase Ink Business cards are pretty awesome. The 5X bonus on the Ink Cash is really lucrative, especially if you charge your internet, cell phone, cable, and Netflix on it. The Ink Preferred is awesome too, and it's my primary card for all my business expenses.The Hyatt card is also good, especially with the free annual certificate. I believe that it's exempt from the 5/24 rule, which can be helpful.

    Hi Juan. Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United will add to you accumulated United miles. They basically convert to United miles as soon as they get transferred over. The only catch is that once they get transferred/converted to United, they cannot be transferred back to Chase. It's not really an issue, but something to keep in mind. Hope that's helpful. Please let us know if you have any other questions! 🤓

    Does booking a flight with miles/points different than buying with cash or credit. I've heard airlines will prolong your boarding time until they can accommodate you when an empty seat is available.

  • @TripAstute

    Not that I am aware of. The only problem I experience is finding an award seat on the flights that I want. The airlines will often block only a set number of seats for award redemptions (unless you have a certain level of award status). This means that I often get stuck on those early morning or red eye flights. 😬

    It's a tough question to answer without knowing which specific cards you have. My recommendation would be 1) to see whether you have the ability to transfer points to a hotel brand (e.g., a feature found in the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Reserve, & Ink Preferred), 2) compare the cost of booking the room via points vs cash, and 3) determining which method you want to use. 120K points should be enough points for a hotel stay, though it depends on the value of the points currency (i.e., each currency has a different value). Hope that's helpful. If you have any more questions, please let us know ... we are happy to help out! 😊

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    6 жыл бұрын

    It's definitely possible. Just know that each point currency works a bit differently. For example, your Capital One Venture One card points will redeem differently than your Chase Ultimate Rewards points and AMEX Membership Rewards points. 120K points should be enough to cover a weekend away, but you may have to split up your bookings accordingly (e.g., book flights with one card, and hotels nights on one or more cards).

  • @d3rskillz

    Hello here, well, I’m new to this whole point thing! But I need to ask something, I’ve noticed with Chase Freedom Unlimited Credit Card they have an option whereby whereby you can have Cash Redemptions and direct deposit your points as money in either the savings or checking, so my question is is it advisable not to use points on gifts cards, travel etc, if one does not intend to, and still continue depositing them as money into my account? Any cons to it?

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    4 жыл бұрын

    The only drawback to redeeming your points for cashback is the redemption rate. You'll get a standard one cent per point using the cashback redemption. The primary reason that a lot of folks transfer their points to a premium Chase card is so that their redemptions are a higher value. For example, you can often get three cents or more per point on Hyatt hotel transfers, and at least 1.25 cents per point on bookings via the Chase Travel Portal.

    Hello, love your channel, I am looking to travel the world with my wife and baby daughter the next year. We are racking up points quickly via my businesses. Domestic flights will be covered for the most part via SW companion. International will be done via UR ponts. But the longer stay of 3 weeks to 1 mth per location is what I am trying to maximize from my points. Any tips on types of hotels, or how to maximize for the longer stays? I am looking to reduce the out of pocket cash as much as possible. Thanks for any advice. We're looking to stay in New York, Japan, and another Asian country, which we have not yet decided yet...

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! It's a great question. To be honest, for longer stays, I prefer to stay at Airbnbs since it tends to be cheaper and often more comfortable for kids. For those types of stays, a flat rate travel rewards card can come in handy (e.g., Capital One Venture, Barclaycard Arrival Plus, Discover Miles). I would suggest using a flat-rate card for non-bonus spend, and using those points to offset the cost of an Airbnb stay. The Capital One Venture, for example, is currently offering 75,000 points which is worth $1500 of travel. Otherwise, I think the Hyatt Place hotel line is great for families. The rooms are generally big and the rates tend to be more reasonable than other Hyatt resorts. Though it may be hard to find them outside of the US. Hope that's helpful! Let us know if you have any other questions. 😊

    @@TripAstute , I'm new to this and already so confused. We'd like to travel to Greece next year and stay at an all-inclusive resort for our honeymoon. I can't decide signing up on my husband's United account, the Chase Sapphire, or the Capital One Venture. I don't know what you mean by flat-rate card. Should one get more than one card? We aren't high rollers. I was going to try to put our wedding expenses on the card to earn points. But it's all so overwhelming. Thank you!

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Juliana. Flat-rate cards are ones that earn a fixed rate for travel, and usually have limited redemption options (e.g., statement credits). An example would be the Capital One Venture (though they now allow you to transfer points to select airlines). Flexible points cards (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve) allow you to use your points in a variety of ways, and are usually the program of choice for points collectors. We're also planning a wedding right now, so we've been strategically using different cards to maximize the points from our venue deposits. I'll probably do a video on it in a few weeks to outline our approach. Also, if you're interested, we offer a free credit card consultation to help answer questions or develop a card strategy approach: tripast.link/free-consult

    Hi tippa. Do you mean how to calculate the value per point or mile? If so, I usually take the total cash price and divide it by the amount of points that would be required for the equivalent booking. So, if three nights at the Andaz hotel costs $600 total or 50,000 points, I would do $600 / 50,000 = $0.012 or 1.2 cents. Does that make sense? If not, let me know. We are happy to help out! 🤓

    Can you earn Ultimate Travel Points with the Chase Freedom before having the CSP or CSR?

  • @TripAstute

    Hi Steven. You will earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points with the Freedom card, but you won't have all the redemption options unless you have one of the premium cards (i.e., Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, or Ink Preferred). The premium card unlocks additional value and features, and I definitely recommend getting one, especially if you want to do transfers to travel partners. 🤓

    Trip Astute Thanks for you response Ernest. I recently got the Freedom to build a relationship with Chase so that I can apply for the Chase Preferred in the future. My credit score is 740+ due to building credit with Discover. When do you recommend I apply for one of the premium cards to transfer points? (specifically the CSP)

    I would wait at least 90 days before applying for another card. It's not a hard rule, but I feel like issuers can get a bit suspicious if you apply for a lot of credit too soon. In general, I usually advise people to wait 90 days, but if you're interested in applying for multiple cards, you may want to consider an "app-o-rama" (AOR). If you need more info, we recently did a video on some tips and tricks when applying (including the infamous AOR): kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXp916mTpc2-iqw.html

    Do you really accumulate enough points/spend enough money on travel to makes up for the $450 yearly Chase Sapphire Reserve fee? I having trouble justifying the $95 Reserve card. If you already have the Freedom/Freedom Unlimited limited combo, the extra 0.5% on travel and dining with the Preferred doesn't go that far.

  • @TripAstute

    I feel like it's been a very valuable and lucrative card for me. The Reserve card's annual fee is more like $150 after you factor in the $300 travel credit, and if you spend enough in the bonus categories, it can definitely be worth it. Also, my partner and I have used our airport lounge benefit six times this year, which saved us a ton of money in meals and drinks while traveling. That being said, everyone's situation is different, and your daily spending may not match the bonus categories of the card. Also, you need to factor in the type of traveling that you like to do (e.g., big hotels vs boutique hotel, economy vs business/first class).🤓

    I still don't get how this works! What if I book from like Momondo? It's way cheaper than other options given through chase, I guess it's not possible to use points there?

  • @TripAstute

    Yeah. You basically have two choices with Chase UR points. Either you transfer them to the travel partner (e.g., United, Hyatt, etc.), or book on the travel portal for a flat-rate (1.25 or 1.5 cents per point depending on the type of Sapphire or Ink card that you have). Unfortunately, you can't use the points toward a purchase on Momondo. Though if that how you normally book flights, I would consider getting a flat-rate travel card like the Capital One Venture which you can use on any site and redeem the points at a fixed rate.

    Keep in mind that Chase points are valuable for more than just flights. I've found hotel redemptions to be very lucrative as well, especially with Hyatt.

    Heres my burning question. I'm deciding between Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP) and Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR). CSP redeems at 1.25 per point and CSR redeems at 1.5 per point only when used on Chase's Ultimate Rewards portal. SO...when you transfer to a carrier , I understand that despite the bonus that a CSR 1:1.5 point redemption gives you on the chase portal, sometimes a partner carrier will have a better deal than the portal, *even though* their redemption is 1:1. (This is where I might be wrong. Please correct me at any point) Here is my main question - if you are going to be primarily transferring points from the chase portal to a partner carrier like Delta, British airways etc at 1:1, does that completely negate the perk of the CSR's 1.5 redemption rate, leveling the playing field with the CSP's 1.25 redemption rate? Is there a benefit to transferring CSR points compared to CSP points in any way? Summary and follow up question - if you're almost exclusively transferring to a partner carrier site (as most insiders say this is the best way to get most bang for your buck), excluding the 3x on travel and dining and other in-card perks, is there any benefit to holding the CSR over the CSP when we are talking strictly just the best way to redeem points?

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    There is no advantage between the two cards when transferring points to a travel partner. I think most people (including myself) would argue that the benefit of the CSR over the CSP is in the card benefits, e.g., Priority Pass lounge access/restaurant credits, 3X on dining and travel, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck reimbursement. Also, since the $300 travel credit is so easy to redeem (i.e., with how Chase categorizes travel expenses), I feel like the actual annual fee is really $150. Also, in terms of which is a better value, it's about 50/50 when it comes to point transfers vs portal purchases for me. Granted, I'm usually flying economy and business class, the experience may be different for others. If you're on the fence, you're probably better off getting the CSP right now since Chase is offering a higher welcome offer. If you decide at some point that you want the CSR, you can always upgrade the card after your first year. Just keep in mind that the CSR is a Visa Infinite product, so it does require a $10K credit limit. Hope that's helpful! 🤓

    @@TripAstute Thanks so much! So if you use the portal 50% of the time, then the CSR gets the nod by a touch for sure. But if I can get more points with Business Ink, that might be my go to. Would that make it harder for me to get a sapphire card in the near future?

    Yes, you can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points for cash or gift cards. Though the redemption rate is a standard one cent per point, which is less than what you would get if you went with a travel redemption.

    Everybody keeps neglecting to add the value of the miles earned when you book through the UR portal, plus the HUGE value of the MQMs or flown miles if you're loyal to one airline and/or have status.

  • @TripAstute

    @TripAstute

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's a good point. If you're pursuing loyalty status, it's definitely a compelling reason to use the UR portal (over transferring points) so that you earn the miles and MQMs. 👍

    I don't understand how the United is only 35k? What you're showing isn't that only for departure? And you have to pick a return date separately too at separate points? So technically it should be more than 35k, usually the return will likely be the same as departure totalling 70k which is weird. Because each time I click the select it prompts me to click arrival adding the points up.

    Good catch! I had to retry booking the flight on the United Portal to figure out what happened. I must have completely missed that disclaimer (even though I was searching for a roundtrip ticket). Sorry for the confusion!

    The only problem with this video is that when you book through the Chase app, the price you see there is for the round trip. Meanwhile, when booking through United that 35K points you showed is only for the departure flight and you'd have to pay more when selecting your return. Always more expensive.

    @@TripAstute I have about 28K points on my United Card, but then it sucks because I can not book a full trip with those points and United does not allow to pay the difference (whatever more is needed to book the full trip). In the end buying United miles is not a good choice and I rather earn miles on my Saphire and then, booking directly through United is more expensive. Would be awesome if you make a video about that.

    I guess it depends how "hands on" you want to get with your points. For those that want a more simplified approach, I recommend either cash back or flat-rate rewards cards (e.g., Capital One Venture).
