Thanks David, I learned a lot and realized my Ponderosa's in Madera County, CA are doomed, the entire mountain is covered with dead trees, I've been watering mine but now they have pitch tubes all over them and they are pushing sap like crazy! I am going to go cry now too......

We had HUGE DEVESTATION in Moro bay and los Osos ca. For the past 30 years. Due to Beatles or fungi depending on which experts you spoke to..A woman there made it in the news cause she treated a truely Dead looking pine She poured a solution of water and tea tree oil all around the roots every week, and over a 15 month period. The news took a pic again and it looked brand new. Very healthy! Thing is..". I lived next door..... this was real!

One year I was sitting in our livingroom and all of a sudden I could hear this "munch, munch, munch" sound. At first I thought we had rats but upon tracking the sound I found that it was coming from our wood pile. I thought for sure that I was going to find some rats in the stack but upon looking I found nothing at all. Very soon I realized the sound was coming from "inside" the wood and that was my first time ever experiencing or hearing of thes "bark beetles". I couldn't burn that wood fast enough lol.

I would have gladly worked as a volunteer in California, OR, or WA even if I was paid peanuts, to go out and fell these types of trees. I imagine that capable, marginal, homeless people living on the streets in those states would have done so as well, in exchange for lumber to build homes and homesteads. California especially, needs to think outside of the box if it wants to save itself. Who cares if it's federal or state land. As if the beetles care about imaginary lines on a map. The amount of destruction and chemical poisoning from burned homes and towns is mind-blowing. Better homesteaders than the hellscape of a big fire.

My friend just told me a lot of her fruit trees are dead from the beetle that makes those little black holes. I checked my trees and nothing. Of course I spray with Neem oil, but will be spraying them a lot more. Is there anything she can do?

why is it necessary to take down the tree to stop the spread? I would have thought it would have the oppposite effect: to speed up infestation as the beetles move to the tree next door.

The best treatment is prevention. Another thing not mentioned in the video is judicious thinning. Less chance of the beetles spreading from tree to tree. After it’s infected get the tree down ASAP or risk further spread.

All efforts to control the beetles has failed. Best to just let the beetles run their course. Trees and bark beetles have co-existed for thousands of years. Just use dead trees for firewood. By the time standing dead trees are dried out enough to burn the beetles have left. A good book on how useless the attempts to stop bark beetles have been is 'Empire of the Beetles' by Andrew Nikiforuk.
