Bark beetles may be small, but they’re responsible for destroying millions of acres of forest in the United States. Not only are they major threats to our forests, but these pests will kill trees in our yards and public spaces as well.
Bark beetles are tiny pests, with most growing to the size of a single grain of rice. Their bodies are cylindrical in shape, and their body colors are usually dark red, black, or brown. These beetles do have wings and are capable of flight. The wings are protected underneath the elytra when at rest. Bark beetle larvae are pasty white in color with brown heads.
You can observe bark beetle activity by simply observing the trees on your property. If possible, it may be worth inspecting trees nearby your property as well. You’ll want to look out for the early signs of a bark beetle infestation. This includes frass, which is composed of sawdust and droppings, and in some trees, pitch tubes. Another way to check for bark beetle activity is to look for entry holes. Stressed trees may be unable to produce pitch, so the entry holes of adult bark beetles will have to suffice. If possible, you can remove a portion of the tree’s bark, and you may be able to observe galleries created by the bark beetles.
To stop a bark beetle infestation from killing your trees, you can use a chemical application to prevent adult beetles from penetrating past the bark. We recommend you use a product like Sylo Insecticide. Sylo is a Cypermethrin-based product that is labeled to prevent bark beetles in general from penetrating past a treated tree’s bark. For bark beetle control, you can apply a 0.1% emulsion of Sylo insecticide. Spray the bark of the tree where bark beetles are expected to invade. Remember that different species may target different spots on a tree. These spots can include the lower tree trunk, the mid tree trunk, the upper tree trunk, the tree’s branches, or even small twigs. Be sure to spray the bark thoroughly, but not to the point of runoff. When applied properly, bark beetles will be unable to infest treated trees for up to 90 days under normal weather conditions. Pests that come in contact with Sylo’s residual barrier will have their nervous system damaged and will die within 20 minutes.

Actually chemicals can kill the larva boring in the center of the tree. I found out about one called Safari SG 20. I spoke to the company tech support guy who has a PHD in horticulture and he told me the Safari SG 20 product will in fact kill the larva inside the tree, stopping the damage. You can spray it on or use a soil drench so the roots take it up into the tree and kill the pests.

Safari SG 20 This is a systemic insecticide of the neonicotinoid class (second generation, by the way). It is not even produced in Europe. Highly toxic. But HOW can it penetrate through the bark into the area of the cambium on which the larvae feed if it cannot physically penetrate through the cork of the bark (only physically impossible) and neonicotinoids, even in such an elephant dose, do not work well against insects with gnawing mouthparts. By the way, stem injections do NOT work on coniferous plants (read Sanchez and Ortega)

Is this insecticide toxic to the surrounding environment? How often should trees be treated for prevention?

What if your trees are 100 feet tall? There's no way to spray the entire trunk of our trees. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills. In the sierra Nevada national forest. Our trees are pretty tall here.

No problem! There are at least 2 solutions: the services of arborist-climbers or the use of forest drones. As soon as the war in Ukraine ends (I live in Kiev, the capital of the country), I will make my own forest drone and provide services not only in my country. Nevada - no problem (except work visa)

I am not sure about a triangle, but there is one type that bores a "D" shaped hole. Possibly, this is what you are seeing? I am sorry, I dont remember the name but a quick internet search for "D shaped hole in tree" should yield quick results, because I think they are a unique species.
