How to rebuild Ford Model A shift tower with Steve Mitchell
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Mitchell Manufacturing is well known for their Ford Model A overdrive units, but did you know they also build transmissions, shift towers, and things to make Model A life even easier and more fun? Steve Mitchell shows us how he rebuilds the Model A shift towers he uses in the Mitchell synchronized transmissions and also rebuilds for stock transmissions.

This guy is as much gold as Bob. We need to preserve his knowledge.
In Cincinnati there is a Ford Model A restaurant and in the lobby is a shift tower for the kids to play with. I spent ten minutes working the stick and looking at the internals for the shear educational benefit. Imagine my enjoyment watching this Paul Shinn video. Can’t wait to try the finger flick test on my 31 Cabriolet.

Excellent! Have heard of that restaurant , if we are in the area, would you show us around? I'll buy!
Wow Paul, that was some real interesting points to give and advice as well. I think that would be something that would be for anyone who has a Model A. Thanks for the video and thanks to Steve for all the advice. Have a wonderful weekend!

Delightful to finally enjoy seeing and meeting these fine folks … 36% in a 1939 Ford pickup.
Paul, I’m glad that you had the opportunity to travel up and visit the Mitchell family business. It is a small family business in the true sense of the word, a dying breed. Steve, Bob, and so many like minded people are the foundation of the enduring Model A community. Schwalm’s engine shop is another fine example. If you’re ever visiting the East coast, they would be worth a visit. You know you’re in good hands with these businesses when their waiting lists are six months or more on average. Steve has helped me out with professional advice on Model A projects extending beyond gearboxes and drivetrains. I’m a true believer in the overdrive gearbox for anyone wishing to use their A as a driver; yes it is that good. I’m considering his transmission gearbox, not so much for the synchro feature, but rather the gear ratio spacing. Using the overdrive gearbox as a ratio splitter one can mask some of the large jumps between ratios in the transmission. Second gear and overdrive is golden for climbing hills. The new transmission would be icing on the cake. Steve’s challenge is that there are only seven days in a week. He’s the real deal and his products reflect this. Likewise for the entire family. For anyone not familiar, visit their website.
I had the good fortune to take a drive up from Orange County to pickup my overdrive from Steve and he gave me a wonderful tour of the facility, as well as rebuilding my shift tower while I was there, so I had a first hand seminar with the Master himself. I was also able to get a stick with a butler finish on it, and we know how hard it is to find those!
Mitchell makes outstanding products and are wonderful to work with. It is very easy to see how much pride they have in their products through their craftsmanship all the way to the way they package them when they ship them out. I've been recommending their transmissions quite a bit lately, as it is a good deal of effort putting in the flathead v8 transmissions, let alone the trouble of finding quality ones. Having those close ratios and their overdrive is a fantastic combination.
The folks at Mitchell Manufacturing are friendly, quite helpful and simply provide amazing products and service! Have the sync trans and overdrive installed in our "31 Deluxe Roadster, driving it is quite a pleasure thanks to Mitchell Manufacturing and the BLT Guys!

Yes they are!
Pretty neat to think one of those gearboxes at 1:18 might be the one on order for my Tudor down here in Australia. Great video work as always. Having made a few myself, I know the sheer amount of time and work it often takes to put out a video.
Thank you Paul and pass my thanks along to Steve. Awesome video!
So awesome to see people with so much knowledge and expertise on Model A’s and new products to keep them still stock awesome video

That was one of your best videos. I learnt a lot watching Steve assemble a shift tower so as to make it nicer to shift. I must pull mine apart as it hangs up shifting to 2nd from 1st. Thanks for the video.

Hi Paul, Yes I have enjoyed this Mitchell visit, and I do have ordered and installed both the dipstick tube and the shift seals inside the bell house, and I can confirm its a very nice and good quality products. Has stopped the oil 100% of dripping into the bell housing and to check the transmission oil is a breeze. Very interesting this Mitchell visit and thanks Paul.

If adding synchronous shifts add to the club, then YES! Most of the kids today have never driven a manual shift car Period! So the hurdle is pretty high for those people, who may just say Phooey! A large number of trucking companies today are going to automated manual trans for big trucks. Less training and Zero botched shifts! have a million plus miles of non-synchro trans experience, but I am in the minority these days. Kudos to you again, Paul. You are hitting it out of the park!

That's pretty much my attitude as well. I noticed some guys in our club went to synchro transmissions so the wife would drive. Now, we see a LOT of ladies driving Model A's. That's a good thing.
You know he’s a pro when his verbal explanation is 15 minutes, but the performance is less than five. He even has his jigs set up.

I just put a Synchro 3 speed with taller 2nd gear in my Tudor. Wow! It's awsome. It was worth the long wait. Extremely well made, crisp and tight shifting with a shorter throw. Buy one!

Mechanically, they are about the same. I prefer the 30/31 models slightly because of the larger radiator and smoother styling
