One of the best how-to videos i have ever seen. Clear, concise, nothing left out, nothing overstated. Well done! This will save me at least $20 this week!
The cross sectional drawing made this better than any other tutorial ive seen. Nice work man
I tried to install a quick release system onto a bike it was too small for and had balll bearings everywhere, i was so stressed about it and this taught me exactly how to solve that problem!! I guess you can learn anything on KZread!!
thank you, 11 years ago you made this vide, 2023 and it helped me - history is important - thank you again :)
Text book. If you cant sort your bearings after watching this, then give up. Great vid!!!!!
Good instruction video. I had done this while ago not knowing what I was doing. If I had watched this before, it could have saved me a lot of time.
Enjoyed your video. Well done. It was easy to watch and not too long. Keep your explanations the same (not too technical) as I for one find some videos overboard technically.
Excellent video, going beyond the call of duty with the diagram. I wish more tutorial videos on YT were like this. thumbs up!
AH!! I'm sorry i had a blonde moment. I wasn't putting the wheel into the front dropouts so the extra space that was there is supposed to be occupied by the dropouts. The cap that screws onto the skewer covers the part that was sticking out. The wheel fits perfectly into the frame with nothing sticking out. Sorry about that. Anyway your vids helped alot in fixing up my bike. Thanks anyway and thanks for replying fast.
Thank you for drawing a diagram! That makes everything so much clearer!
A decade later and this video is still helping people. Thanks!

No problem, glad to hear.
Best explanation for repairing/replacing wheel bearings on KZread!
Taken all the fear of this task away - my Brompton bike riding buddy set me this challenge when we were out on the 'big bikes' and he discerned the need to inspect the bearings. My vintage Peugeot has sat in the dining room waiting for the moment when I could pluck up enough courage to start the task. Thanks CJH. BSA
Excellent coverage of how to tighten the locknut, and how tight the cone should be against the ball bearings. That was what I came here for, and I got all the info I needed. Thank you.
Wow!! Loved the detailed info. Very well explained thanks! Drawing was very helpful too👍👍
I discovered it was a dust cap with an smaller inner diameter: like a doughnut cut in half sideways. Thanks for getting back to me.
Something I've found to be helpful, is that after I've greased the bearings and put everything back together I'll tighten the cone to the locknut just snug so that I can nudge the cone to loosen or nudge the locknut to tighten till I get the tension perfect then tighten cone to locknut to set the adjustment. This has worked pretty good.
great video - thanks! Finally someone working on a bike that's not brand new and shiney. Mine never is. :)
I watched a lot of you tube vidios on hub repair, and yours was the most informative!
Today (with your video help) I switched out a front axle for cost of parts, grease and two new ballbearings (8,70€). THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Jessica R Brown hi
Big THANK YOU! Very useful. The diagram is wonderful. I was smiling at explanations what a "cross-section" is, because I've got used to technical drawings, but I realize that many people can't read diagrams easily.
Very informative. The whiteboard diagram was a nice touch.
This guy is cool I like how he goes into in depth and he how he can see it in his mind like the back of his hand when he was drawing it out on the board.... those wheels are definately from early as the 1990s now upper end roadbike have essentially the same kind of bearings as you would see on skateboards but in different sizes... sweet vid man I know I'm like 8 yrs late

You're right about the vintage of those wheels, but low to mid end bikes actually still use this style of bearings!
I'm teaching myself bicycle mechanics so i really appreciate this. 👍👍👍
Thanks for being very informative, which you take step by step of what tools are used.
Excellent video! You covered all the details so well! If you aren't a teacher by trade, you'd be a great one! Lots of patience, and seeing things from the other guy's point of view! Thanks much!
Wow. Very nice video. What i liked is that you used for your video a real wheel instead a fancy new wheel and hub like other guys. Thanks for this beautiful tutorial.
Dude. Your the Man. I was lost on what to do. . my first mechanic job. You were so helpful. Two thumbs up for you

Now I finally understand how those hubs work. Thank you for such a great video!
11 yrs later - Still Excellent!
Great video! Ridden over 50k miles and yet didn't have a very clear picture of how this worked nor how to make a repair. Will try this out on my noisy front wheel this weekend!
Lifesaver. The diagram was a huge help. Thanks for helping out this budding bike mechanic!
Excellent video cj. Wish I had watched it before taking my road bike wheel apart!
Great video!!! One of the best presentations I've ever seen. You knocked it out of the park!

This is the best video on ball bearings and greasing them.
You have the best bike videos on youtube. I love how you use really simple bikes and explain so well the mechanics, while there is a lot of video out there with top equipments that can't explain simple stuff like this. Keep up the great job
Thank you for making this video. This was the only video I could find that shows how to take apart bolt on wheel hubs.
Excellent video. Your explanations are clear and I learned a lot! Thanks.
What a fantastic video.. Well done man! Best explanation seen so far. Thanks for your efforts!! Cheers
What a fantastic video! Now I finally understand what the internals of a hub look like, which helps me understand what I need to do to service it. Thanks.
Your a good teacher, you explain everything very well😁
Thank you for such thorough explanation. The cross-section diagram really helped as well.
Thank you for this fantastic explanation and diagram of the hub. It really helped me understand what each part is and what how it functions. The description of how to actually do it was superb as well. Thank you very much for your detailed explanation of the process as well. You are awesome!
Thank you, my tire started rubbing against my rim 20 minutes ago, this helps me so much to fix it.

Great video! I just bought a bike and will be doing the assembly myself for the first time. Your tutorials have given me every confidence that everything will be just fine. Thanks!
Excellent video. Good balance between just enough detail with the economical use of time and not dragging out the explanations.
Great video - I need to service my rear hub, but i'm a bit of a bike noob and didn't really understand what goes on in there.. now I do so thanks! The diagram was just what I needed. Great work CJ
Thank you, just nice to watch someone that knows what they're doing to double check my own work :)
You made this messy process perfectly clear. I applied it right away. Thank you !

Absolutely excellent tutorial. I fixed my bike thanks to your video and will use what I learned for the rest of my life. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for this instructive video. It's very clear and takes the stress out of dismantling and checking/servicing the hub. I am rejuvenating a bike I haven't ridden for 5 years. Pumped up the tyres and one burst. Replaced it and the next split! And so it goes.
This tutorial was very informative and detailed. More tutorials need to be done like yours. Thank you and I look forward to watching the rest of your tutorials.
Thank you man! You're a life saver! Very informative video.
Excellent tutorial - just the right amount of detail to make it crystal clear.
This is a great video. The detailed description of the hub is very well done.
I love that your ride this POS bike, but keep it so well tuned. I have what i call my trash bike (i found it in the trash), and i love working on it, keeping it in pristine condition, and yet no one would ever steal it. :) Great videos, thanks a lot!

Thank you so much for making this, it is so helpful.
A superb video, many thanks for this.
Thanks..very nice explanation on cycle bearing operation and how cycle wheel rotates on bearings smoothly. you are very good at explaining things.
i've been looking all over youtube for videos like this, thank you so much for uploading these educational videos
Nicely done! Today I took a hub apart and to my surprise.....bearings all over! (I'm a noob) Then the moment of "what did I do??" After your vid, I'm confident I can get it back together and running freely again, which was my intent to begin with. Thanks for you concise and clear instruction!
Very clear thank you. I like the fact that you showed the diagram as well as the practical. That helped me understand what it was that I was doing and therefore made the job easier.
great tutorial i was changing my axle to a quick release and found your info on the whole tight but not to tight on to allow the wheel to spin really helped me thought i broke my bike lol, thanks bro real good teacher
Thanks much. Watched this 5 or 6 times as I completed the relubing! *Very* helpful for me.
Best video tutorial on how to clean out the front wheel ball bearings. Great explanation and to the point. Wish you could have cover the rear bearings and explain how everything works, but hopefully on your next video. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Learned a lot today.

If you watch my video titled: "How to Change a Freewheel/Cassette on a Bicycle" you'll learn how to remove the Freewheel, which will show you the part you are missing in this video. Thanks for watching.
Thanks a million, great video and you explain things so well. I now know so much more about bikes than I did 20 mins ago and I have been riding for 30 years!
Nice tutorial. I like your inclusion of the helpful diagram in the beginning. Good teacher!
that was a good explanation of how the bearings work. I find it alot easier to adjust the bearings by using two cone and adjustable spanners at the same time, if there's too much play you carefully turn both lock nuts clockwise simultaneously and if its binding you carefully turn both cones anticlockwise simultaneously, so long as both sides start out moderately tight repeating the adjustment two or three times torques it up sufficiently enough. I've not come across anybody else that does it this way but if you haven't already tried it I've always found it to be less frustrating and more precise.
Excellent video! Clear, focused, covers the topic. Great job
excellent demonstration thank you very much for taking time and effort to help some one in need,i did all steps and fixed my bike .keep posting good stuff
