AH!! I'm sorry i had a blonde moment. I wasn't putting the wheel into the front dropouts so the extra space that was there is supposed to be occupied by the dropouts. The cap that screws onto the skewer covers the part that was sticking out. The wheel fits perfectly into the frame with nothing sticking out. Sorry about that. Anyway your vids helped alot in fixing up my bike. Thanks anyway and thanks for replying fast.

Taken all the fear of this task away - my Brompton bike riding buddy set me this challenge when we were out on the 'big bikes' and he discerned the need to inspect the bearings. My vintage Peugeot has sat in the dining room waiting for the moment when I could pluck up enough courage to start the task. Thanks CJH. BSA

Something I've found to be helpful, is that after I've greased the bearings and put everything back together I'll tighten the cone to the locknut just snug so that I can nudge the cone to loosen or nudge the locknut to tighten till I get the tension perfect then tighten cone to locknut to set the adjustment. This has worked pretty good.

This guy is cool I like how he goes into in depth and he how he can see it in his mind like the back of his hand when he was drawing it out on the board.... those wheels are definately from early as the 1990s now upper end roadbike have essentially the same kind of bearings as you would see on skateboards but in different sizes... sweet vid man I know I'm like 8 yrs late

that was a good explanation of how the bearings work. I find it alot easier to adjust the bearings by using two cone and adjustable spanners at the same time, if there's too much play you carefully turn both lock nuts clockwise simultaneously and if its binding you carefully turn both cones anticlockwise simultaneously, so long as both sides start out moderately tight repeating the adjustment two or three times torques it up sufficiently enough. I've not come across anybody else that does it this way but if you haven't already tried it I've always found it to be less frustrating and more precise.
