    Well done. I haven't rebuilt a starter since high school auto shop, a million moons ago. Now I'll have a spare starter ready to go.

    Thanks this helped me build a Frankenstarter for my 2.0L Ford. It was dead, but I had a New 4.6L PMGR pair for in the back of the garage I never used. So after watching this great video; I took everything apart and moved the motor and solenoid to the original front nose. BUT I had to repeat the job when there was a TERRIBLE GRINDING NO START outcome 😳🤦🏻‍♂️😥. Apparently the 2.0L has a 10 tooth pinion gear,. While the 4.6L pinion gear hate 12 teeth. Took it apart again to put the original 10 tooth pinion gear with some extra gear lube. But I left the new planetary gear reduction set inside my successful Frankenstarter. Thanks for the video, it was all I need to build my confidence level to; "Hold my beer, and watch this!"

    Thanks for the demo. Made two starters into one good one. Not trying to save money, just no parts where I am so I junk yard dove and found one that was wrong but had the solenoid and drive I needed. Thanks again

    So it's actually best to just use your torx bit on a socket just buy torx bit socket and when you do it you put that socket directly at b directly on your boat first before you tap the bolt you tap on top of the socket or top of the extension on the socket that's exactly how you're supposed to do it that and that's exactly how you do it on transmissions to to get the bellhousing law because if you damage that head on that bolt sometimes you ever use it sometimes you don't but the biggest issue is you can snap that head off or you can round out the head because you weakened the metal that holds the teeth of the tq 25bit

    Visited the web site, and I see the repair parts kit for the 2000 Explorer, but it is listed for the SOHC engine, and not a OHV 4.0. Perhaps they are the same starter, but knowing there are differences between the two engines, obviously the cam setup, but does the kit fit both SOHC and OHV models? Thanks for the video too.

    Do not throw away the brush holder ring....you may need it later or for another starter. Or do throw it away as instructed so you'll have to buy a whole kit to get one. Yeah, they don't sell individual components...just kits. Kits are reasonably priced.

    If you're talking about the plastic ring that holds the brushes back for installation, a 7/8 socket works well...

    At around 17:30 you replace the bushing in the nose piece but don't mention anything about closing up the hole drilled in the nose piece so you could remove the old bushing. Is that just left open to the elements?

  • @rebuilderinabox

    @rebuilderinabox

    You can put RTV or caulking there if you like. We consider it a waste of time because the nose piece has a huge opening for the bendix 1 inch from there.

    Used your rebuild kit on 94 B4000 5sp 4x4. Starter would grind before so decided to go with rebuild kit as flywheel looked pretty decent. Didn’t replace needle bearing as only tiny amount of play noticed and trying to be efficient. So reinstall everything being careful to follow along and even move the truck in gear slightly to allow fresh flywheel teeth and starter still grinds. Could the flywheel or starter be all bad? Or is there alignment on the starter I’m missing?

    2.3L? 4.0L? Is it the right starter with right bendix is the first question. If yes, is it the right flywheel and who installed it, because it sounds like it's been split apart before or the ring gear mis installed. A dial indicator with a magnetic base is used to check run out with the ignition system disabled. You can send us the starter and we can verify everything is OK, so you know. Contact us thru our site alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com.

    4.0L. No idea on history of truck, just got it actually. Thought it just needed the starter fixed and bump started and ran fine. Haven’t found specs on starters to see difference between auto and manual starter. Don’t believe it’s the original starter though. Will be looking into flywheel, clutch, etc replacement.

    10:45 those 2 screws are designed to fail and cost people money. Those are the ground and look at them. Do they look like they can handle 200+ amps? I fixed my starter by tightening up those screws. Made to fail by design.

    What happens if you don't have a solenoid on top it's just the starter so how would you rebuild that

  • @rebuilderinabox

    @rebuilderinabox

    You can still rebuild, just put the solenoid on later. You need a solenoid that comes new in our kit to be functional.

    I am a big believer in DIY, but a Ford reman is 100 bucks, do you feel your parts are better quality? My time is worth a few bucks too ;0.

    Yes, our parts are better than most BIG BOX store reman's. We have local garages that we have to give lifetime warranties to. Meaning we better have quality parts.

    You mentioned if the armature was burnt, when you open the starter you'll notice a burnt smell. Would that be similar to any electrical motor, they smell like somebody is burning Raid bug spray?? It burns your nose!

    If you work on it yourself, and also are the driver/owner and have any common sense, you'll know when you did it. You can only crank for 15 seconds without causing possible damage. If you crank for about 1 minute or more straight, the starter will be junk, and you will definitely smell it.

    @@rebuilderinabox Not a problem there! With EFI and electronic spark, if my engine doesn't start in 10 seconds I know there must be something wrong! Call me lazy, go right ahead, but I'd rather find n fix the simple crap 1st!
