The Quadrajet is the closest you will come to fuel injection results without actually going to fuel injection. You can control and tune every aspect and range you need with these carburetors. One thing I am surprised they never addressed was the throttle shaft wear. The base plates should have had bronze bushings installed from the factory.

Q-jets are great carbs! I would grab every one off the big block caddy’s in the junk yard and build them for my small blocks. If you kept your foot out of it they would get great mileage but when you stomp on them they made the best throaty sound when the toilet bowl secondaries opened up. And I was familiar with all the tricks they talked about in the video.

No doubt it's important to check, new parts can change things. A lot of my friends play with small engines and always wanna get in there and adjust the float without knowing what it's supposed to be. It's running like crap, that has to be the problem right? In all my time I've never had to adjust a float on a small engine , unless a butcher has been there before. Fun to see what ya find on an automotive carb when ya open em up too. Been building Q-jets for a while & You guys did a fair job but missed a few critical items. First off the Q-jet is a fairly complex carb w/real good metering aspects, the small primary bores will give your engine good throttle response at low speeds. After using one a square bore will feel mushy at low speed by comparison. Spread bore unlike any other? What about the Carter thermo quad? To remove the screws holding the throttle butterflies in place better grind off the part of the screw that extends beyond the throttle shaft or you will likely break the head off the screw & will have hell removing what's left of the screw. The end of the screw is staked at the factory to prevent them from backing out. I use a Dremel grinder w/ a small carbide burr to do the job. Screws for the bottom plug, 7/16" NF tap will work better. I have a length of 7/16" aluminum rod threaded to use for plugs. Base needs to be resurfaced on a large belt sander, they can be really warped. Same w/ the main body. The most common mistake owners make when they have a problem is to over torque the hold down bolts & warp everything. Easy way to check the main body for warpage is to look at the slots where the secondary divider plate goes. If they are wider at the top than the bottom then the main body is warped. I have a way of straightening this part but it is difficult & the process is too lengthy for discussion here. You neglected to cover the installation of the choke lever onto the choke shaft, a very frustrating process. On the chevy carbs the plug at the back of the fuel inlet is also prone to leak. Most times this can be corrected by driving the plug in tighter (it is a tapered plug) & re-peening the area around the plug. Lot of critical adjustments to make also, especially the choke pull off which controls the rate of opening for the secondary air valves. If not done properly the carb will bog at WOT or the secondary air valves will open too slow causing disappointing performance. You guys did a fair job otherwise.

File down and then epoxy over the stock plugs and it good to go. Vinyl interior wasn't exactly "luxury" LOL and neither was the abhorrently bad fuel mileage

I had an old ponitac that was in dry storage for 12 years - put up on jack stands. 400 engine with Q-jet and a 400 trans. Gas tank was emptied and the radiator/engine block drained. After 12 years i rolled it out into the sunlight, topped off fluids, and installed a battery. I primed the fuel bowl with gas, turbed the key and guess what happened.....nothing. I had to file the points. After filing and the points the engine fired and ran on choke like it was just parked yesterday. When it got warm i bumped the throttle and it came down to idle. I drove it to the gas station to top-off the tank. That was 5 years ago and it still runs great. Even the accelerator pump works fine. I haven't made a single adjustment on the carburetor. I never understood the hate surrounding Q-jets. They are a great carb if you know how to work on them.

Edelbrock performer carbs are best for the street. Easiest to tune and they stay performing great for years to come. A well experienced holley tuner may squeeze a few more hp from a holley but good luck getting it to stay that way. I've had a performer rpm matched top end set on our 64 Malibu. The original 283 is in storage. It has a 350 4 bolt main high hp version with powerglide twenty years ago I took the double pumper and torker 2 combo off it. The edelbrock stuff has been performing flawless all these years. Use stabilizer when you're not gonna drive your stuff. It saves alot of headaches.

People dont like that secondary throttle stop lever i hear, but some experts say leave the secondaries stuff alone.. tho i have heard of drilling 2 tiny holes somewhere i forget, maybe in the secondary flap edges? Really how about a performance tip, please and thank you.. I know i ran a 750 double pumper up against an unrebuilt qaudrajet same engine.. holley took it to task. Gotta at least tune the idle mixture screws for highest idle i know that much. Others have suggested the metering rods n jets.. but idk i never got that far.

If one uses a 72 jet & a 49 primary metering rod with a lite power piston spring over 20 miles a gallon can be had in the 396 & 402s. The 350 would get 24mph sometimes better with that set up. One would also have to tune the dist advance curve. Setting the secondaries for power one could enjoy both worlds mpgs & tons of power. The secondaries would take some drilling on some of the orifices & grinding on the metering rods. The Q jets were fun to work on to get max MPGs & Max Power. There was no other carbs that I built that could do the same.

That combination would render a total of 0.00218576’ which is way lean for a big CI engine like that. I’de look to experiment and look at the plugs-monitoring the temps also as that seems too lean which might create excess heat issue on top of the lean fuel ratio it would introduce. The engineered spec chart call for at least a 0.0025000’ total fuel ratio mix for proper emulsification for proper 14.7:1 ratio for an efficient combustion.

I can rebuild them in my sleep... No need to drill and tap the plugs on the bottom. Just rough up the casting, and put your epoxy on. Most kits also have a sponge rubber seal to put in the baseplate to help with this problem.

Kenny, I agree about the well plugs, I had one on my 76 caddy and even the small plugs were leaking. I found that by filling the fuel bowl with fuel and let it set over night the next morning I seen where it was leaking , and sealed them and the big well plugs with J.B. weld and worked great .

Those sponge seals rarely work for very long. Using epoxy alone will work for a while but the fuel will eventually attack it, especially the witches brew of fuel that is currently available & I'm not just talking about alcohol. The threaded plug idea is best since the fuel can attack the epoxy only at the end of the thread, takes quite a while to work its way through all the thread & cause a leak.

@@larryhutchens7593 I personally use a two part panel adhesive used for bonding body panels. It takes overnight to set up, but nothing will compromise that stuff. I've used it to glue windows back into the regulator tracks on old cars, and even glued a bumper bracket on a '56 Chevy that a customer had chromed without knowing the bracket was missing. I jacked the car up with his bumper jack the next day to show him it's strength.

Very good video! I need some advice on something. I recently bought an 1986 chevy truck with a V6 4.3. It has a propane system on it and the original carburetor is no where to be found. I have a 78 quadrajet that I just rebuilt and would like to install it. the truck intake manifold is the original four barrel spreadbore quadrajet carburetor set up. Also this engine has the electronic spark control distributor without the vaccum advance. if I put this 78 carb I got on it do you think it will work just fine?

Then on holly’s you put chapstick on the power block gasket. So they wont stick. And after it fires up and runs for a bit you shut it off and operate the accelerator pump til it primed. If it ever backfired pull it apart you just blown power valve

Two things, if you look at the air valve there is an adjustment on the side you can adjust the spring to come in slower. Another thing there is a plastic cam on the air valve if it's lifting the rear metering jets too high that could cause your problem. It would be easier to put larger diameter metering rods in first that will help lean it out. First check what you have then go from there. The good thing about the secondary's they are really easy to change out no major tear down needed

When I used to rebuild carbs I would slab the throttle shafts and grind down the attachment screws so that there were no screw shafts protruding into the airflow. I also would taper both side edges of the throttle butterflies at WOT so as to smooth airflow in that area. I had a set of ultra-small titanium drill bits that I would use to drill out the jets to precisely calibrate the AF ratio. If I went too far in drilling out a brass jet I would heat up the jet and fill it with solder and redrill it again.

Unlike any other? You forgot about the Thermoquad. They were available in 1000 com units in the 70’s. Both are great carbs. Both are misunderstood. To make a quadrajet sing get the book written by Doug Roe. He tells you how to drill out the emulsion tubes and select the metering rods , jets and and rod forks. GM made several different metering rod forks and it’s worth getting a few to tune with. If you need to you can drill them out, but figuring out the proper height might be difficult. The reason for the long hood on the Monte Carlo, Pointic Grand am and the Cadillac Elldorado was that GM had planned a V12 for future cars. But the EPA stepped in and prevented that from happening. Imagine what could have been if....

You missed a very significant step in the "idle tubes" fuel passage ports clean & part replacement. For one, they almost always have hard build up on the bottom them that only removal by with using and some sort of tool to scrape the fuel deposit calcified build up, off the small hole fuel pathways openings. Second , the "Cliff Ruggles” trick of enlarging the tubes to a “known” chart diameter rendering different flow ratio, to make the emulsifying dynamic most efficient in the idle screws adjustment. And to help add the needed fuel for bigger camshafts. Pontiac's OEM setup are better in this aspect yet the vital step to enlarged them, definitely benefits every engine typically. Rendering Better fuel ratio mixing, And primary control circuit sensitivity~adjustments setting, etc. I performed this task on my Q-Jet and it is every bit as snappy all around response and performance of my Honda Accord EFI is! Completely reliable and efferent form Idle to WOT. And not to overlook the secondary flaps spring tension adjusted. To make it open earlier and easier under the vacuum to alleviate the Classic Quadra-BOG secondary Hit they are down for. Simple but affective. Good grief guys, mention this stuff in about 2 more minutes of teaching there, it is very informative.
