How to Really Speak Better French

If you're looking for a few phrases to help you on your next trip, this video might be too in depth for you. If you're someone who (like me) has dreamed of becoming fluent in French, this might be right up your allée.
The bottom line is that there is no easy or super-quick way to get to an advanced level. But over the years I have come up with a kind of continuing practice that helps me a lot.
If you're learning a language, you can be proud of yourself. Always prioritize working on your language, even if it's just for a few minutes a day. Keep up the momentum!
Here are some of the resources I talk about in the video:
FRENCH PODCASTS
- Crime Story (pronounced creeem sto-REE): Each week two journalists tell the story of a big and notorious French crime. These are very short--generally 12 mins each.
- France Info/ France Inter: These are news and cultural programs you can listen to on the internet, with interviews, debates, politics, etc.
FRENCH LANGUAGE LEARNING NEWSLETTERS
- French Today (www.frenchtoday.com/): So many tips and in-depth articles about every single aspect of the language and culture, often presented in French and English. Also amazing e-books.
- Lawless French (www.lawlessfrench.com/): I love the "subjunctivisor," a tool I cannot live without that helps you know whether you need the subjunctive or not
GREAT INSTAGRAM FRENCH TEACHERS
@alexteachesfrench
@atfrenchies
@hellofrenchnyc
@french_with_clemence
@lingoni_french (she is my current favorite, for advanced speakers and just great real French context in conversation about all kinds of subjects)
Let me know if you have any tips of your own or questions about learning French--I'm not a teacher, but I'll always try to help.

    You proved that learning French is within reach to any English speakers who want to immerse themselves in the community and appreciate the culture they are moving into unlike many of them who claim that French is difficult but they don't actually want to learn it. They want to use their English to dominate the French people, as if they were at home. These folks are really going for it! Your attitude is very commendable and testifies of your consideration for people. * I can't believe how you have transformed, your skin is radiant.

    First off, thank you for this beautiful comment. It's true that in the US, learning foreign languages is just not a real priority (for the most part), and we are lucky that others around the world have made the effort to speak English. But I agree that you cannot really live in a country--and by live I mean assimilate and feel truly a part of the society--unless you are at least making an effort. For me, even though it is often difficult, it is also a great pleasure and an honor to speak French! Next, thank you for your note about my skin. I do think happiness and love have a "glow" effect, but also, the French pharmacie skincare products are amazing!! :-) greetings from Paris

    @@karenbussen If it were only the Americans who were caught up in this lazy and selfish trend, no, the British and the Aussies are too. I wonder what their attitude is in Italy, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Portugal, etc where they emigrate. Yes, I love the French pharmacies for their top notch product ranges and their distinctive smell.

    Funny you mentioned turning on FRENCH subtitles; I usually turn on subtitles in French when watching something in French. Never turn on the English subtitles… but because I have tinnitus, I tend to turn on ENGLISH subtitles when watching programs in ENGLISH. Et j'avais appris le subjonctif en Francais avant d'apprendre ca en Anglais. And sadly, 90% of native English speakers still say “If I was” instead of the correct “If I WERE.”

    Yes ! Subtitles in French! A propos du subjonctif, moi aussi je l'ai d'abord appris en français :-) Can't remember if I talked about my favorite subjonctif tool in this video but it's The Subjunctivisor and it lists every possible phrase where you want to know if you need to use the subjonctif or not www.lawlessfrench.com/subjunctivisor/#subjunctive_phrases Bonne continuation and thanks so much for your comment!

Merci merci
