Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

This was very helpful and insightful, I have always embraced Buddhism, its morality and philosophy but never dove into the core teachings and practicing samadhi before. Perhaps I've been in a delusional state.

A relativist perspective offers valuable insights into how lived experiences of Buddhism can vary depending on social and cultural contexts. Considering the historical distance between us and the origins of Buddhism, it's fascinating to think about how the practice might be shaped differently in places like Myanmar or Thailand, especially compared to regions where other religions are more dominant.

wow, sitting on that floor seems pretty uncomfortable. I mean I sit on the floor a lot, but it's not a bare concrete floor with a thin rug

I've long agreed with the core of Buddhism: the Four Noble Truths. I came to it through studying philosophy and being a big fan of Kant and then Schopenhauer. But a lot of the details of the fourth, the path out of suffering, have always seemed to involve very cultural elements that limit the spread of Theravada and early Buddhism. There simply isn't a culture of support here in the US. I'm about to watch the video and I'm curious to see if it addresses this point. Regardless of having any support in the form of teachers or sustenance, I'm strongly contemplating living the homeless life on my own anyways. I have some money saved up that would sustain me for many years. I've also been homeless before so I know the ropes. Basically, I would make the monk's life work as best I could, always with a mind to reducing craving.

How do I make a good living in order to rack up money to move to Thailand to ordain as a monk, because there are no monasteries in my country? How did you move to Thailand smoothly and how can we do it? Please share. Does not have to be Thailand but any Theravada country.

Drug or arms dealing, perhaps some human trafficking as a side hustle should see you rack up a few billion baht pretty sharpish... because when you have only 2 sets of robes, free accommodation and beg for your food you'll need to be cashed up.

Venerable DUDE .. as a curious lay person .. this video you seem to have titled “How to Practice “ but - your presentation is entirely “cerebral “ and references wiring and Sutra You’ve neglected to advise on : “Taking Refuge : Buddha , Dharma , Sanga 2. The three jewels 3. Daily devotional practice : bowing , prostration, giving 4. Meditation, mindfulness 5. Merit , Virtue , cultivation 6. Offering daily practice to ALL Sentient Beings You have rambled all over the place in an intellectual / cerebral discourse But utterly failed to lay down just an anchor of daily common practice using skillful means with various illustrations and examples Need to work on this Shariputra Thus I have heard with that , closing his KZread Lowering his robe from his right shoulder He circled the English Monk to the Right .. and disappeared Right There ❤
