i feel i am the only person with add who can't focus with audiobooks? i often keep rewinding those 15-30 seconds because i miss big chunks of sentences or feel like i haven't been listening at all. of course it gets worse when im multitasking but even when i'm not my mind never fails to wander and i only realize it after some time passes and i can't even remember what my mind wandered about. if such a thing happens to anyone, what is the best strategy to minimise this when listening to audiobooks cuz i would really love to incorporate them into my reading routine

Have you tried the idea I showed where you also see the book and kindle highlights the words as it reads? Those were my training wheels into audiobooks since I had the same problem you described before.

Me spot on!! I'd walk everyday after work for 45 mins. Figure that'd be the best time to listen. But dam I was wrong. Didn't get past 12 mins cuz I had to keep rewinding like yourself. I'd like to hear other peoples remedy for this

I have less focus with audio books, as well. It leaves my eyes available to see what's going on in the world; you know; the ole' "Ooo..shiny!!!!!" 😆 If I'm not looking down at a book and engaging my eyes, which is hard enough, I may as well not associate with books at all. Which is not acceptable!

I have the exact same problem. I am constantly rewinding because my mind wanders constantly. The times when I’m able to focus more on audio books is when I find the content captivating like a super interesting topic or detailed story. Podcasts like “This American Life” is really captivating.

I can't use audio books, either. I've tried reading the book along with it, speeding up the playback, fiction, non-fiction....it just does not work for me 😞 I can listen to podcasts and news radio, etc, but books, nope.

I do benefit from taking notes but it does slow down my process of reading and therefore de-motivates me faster. I found that rather than jotting down entire quotes, it is more helpful to write page numbers alongside key words or phrases. this way my brain has something to tie into the info and it helps with research type reading a lot

I don't know if it's adhd, and I can't afford to find out. I love consuming knowledge, but I have a really hard time finishing books. Whenever I try reading a book I usually stay motivated and on track to finish it for 3 days( if I have enough interest in it); after that it gets incrementally harder for me to finish it. I never finished the vast majority of my school prescribed novels in high school. I used to heavily rely on exam stress and the notes the teacher gave us to get by.

have you thought about pirating books? if you feel bad you can buy it after you read it or make use of your local library if you have one. that's a resource that can't be overlooked!

Very helpful insights. The one hack I haven't tried is the book summary/video/mind mapping exercise. As with many ADHDers I struggle with working memory and in addition recall so I plan on experimenting with summarizing my reads at the end of my reads. As many somewhat obscure titles do not have an audio accompaniment, I have found iOS and Android mobile device accessibility tools for sight-impaired users to be a huge help.

The most interesting idea to me is to make a private video talking to yourself about the most important ideas of the book. I can see that would use parts of your brain that many people do not use when remembering the most important or interesting parts of a book.

I have been UNMEDICATED for over a year! Definitely ADHD, 😂. I have learned how to change every aspect of my life and manage symptoms effectively… weeks ago figured out, when I’m reading a book if I read out loud and then when I see something, I think it’s important. I repeat it several times…it’s really helping out… Headway APP is really cool! ❤

I also have a hard time concentrating on audiobooks. But after being diagnosed at 40 and taking medication, the rogue ideas that interrupt my reading continuity have been toned down (but I keep a notepad besides me just in case). I also set a regular blocked time dedicated to reading, preferably as early in the morning as I can. Making it a routine, a habit, makes it easier daily.

Reading for leisure is something I used to enjoy, but can no longer do. I have many things I WANT to do, but can't seem to. (drawing, writing, and learning skills I need for life) Audio books require full attention from me, and if I can't be productive while listening, I'd rather just read normally. I enjoy learning, but I find myself in a cycle of restarting books after taking an extended break, making it to the same point, and being burnt out. I've had issues with following the lines in books my whole life, rereading the same line over and over, sometimes I don't even absorb what I read. Might try the following along thing!

I can relate to your struggle with reading and maintaining focus. It can be frustrating when activities we used to enjoy become challenging due to ADHD symptoms. Finding alternative approaches, such as audiobooks, is a great idea, but it's important to prioritize what works best for you and allows for productivity. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, and it's okay to explore different methods until you find what suits you best. Don't be too hard on yourself and keep trying different strategies to make reading and learning more enjoyable and accessible.

My job requires a lot of mindless walking and only a little thinking, so I’ve been trying to listen to audiobooks. But I still can’t focus on them. I heard somewhere that when you walk and talk, for instance, your brain is focusing on walking so your talking is subconscious. I feel like the audiobook is just whizzing by in a blur because my brain is focusing on not crashing my cart into something and actually getting where I need to be.

I listen to mine on a nature walk near my house where I won't be distracted. If you are trying to navigate directions and avoid crashing (and maybe other people), those might be too signficant of distractions to stay focused. What are you reading? A really good "starter book" would be anything by Malcolm Gladwell. It's story format so easier to follow, but it's a bunch of short stories so you don't have to worry about losing the plot line half way through. Does that help?

  • @HIDDENADHD

    @HIDDENADHD

    Жыл бұрын

That's completely understandable! Many people find it challenging to stay engaged in reading material that doesn't capture their interest. It's important to prioritize reading topics that you genuinely enjoy and find interesting. By focusing on subjects that engage you, you're more likely to stay motivated and have a more enjoyable reading experience. Remember, reading is meant to be a source of enjoyment and learning, so feel free to explore topics that pique your curiosity and bring you satisfaction.
