Thankyou Nancy for your video, I am in my mid 60's and have been knitting for more than 50 years but have only ever used written patterns. I have recently received some knitting books (with absolutely gorgeous patterns) that work with charts. It was doing my head in, but having watched your tutorial, I think I may actually feel confident enough to attempt a relatively uncomplicated pattern now. Wish me luck :)

I would love to see another chart tutorial from you so it gets me up to speed on this chart. I love the charts and I do believe that I will be looking more to the charts than the pattern codes because the layout is like a house print and I can follow that much better. I would love to see another tutorial on the charting. Thank you.

It is easy for you, Nancy, bc your mind has grasped what actually needs to be done. To those of us still trapped in "deer in the headlights" mode, could you maybe use a chart and show us as you knit and explain the stitches? I know your video is 7 years old so you might think, "Emmm...that would be NO." Fair enough. I totally get it. But do you know anyone else, maybe, you could recommend if you aren't able to do it? Please? My Memere taught me how to knit 45 years ago but life, then motherhood, stepped in, then working to retirement took all my time. And now I finally have the time to really learn and make something. My much loved Memere is long gone and I don't know anyone who knows how to knit. I don't want this beautiful art to be lost forever. I want to learn it so I can teach my daughters when their lives slow down a bit. I can knit and I've made some gorgeous blankets. But I have no clue how to read a chart even after your very patient explanation. I can envision the knits and the purls, and some of the other ones. But the immediate bind offs and such have my brain shutting down. And the "no stitch" is a whattheflip moment. I can't even try to envision a no stitch although I really have tried. Anyway, I hope I haven't put you off altogether. Thank you for trying for those of us who truly want to learn but so far can't "get it" just yet.

Hi Angel, I'm so sorry to hear of your frustration but I do understand. Trust me, put me in front of a sewing machine and I feel the same. It seems that sewing is not in my wheelhouse. For whatever it's worth, you are not alone with feeling lost in chart reading and I've been asked several times to do another video which is exactly what I plan to do. It's my belief that my video would be far more helpful if I was actually knitting the garment the chart was written for. In fact, the biggest request from my subscribers on my videos has been for me to make something from beginning (gauge swatch) to end (finishing and blocking) that would correspond with the technique I'm teaching. If I'm demonstrating the brioche stitch, they want to see it applied to hat, mitten, etc. Makes sense, live and learn, right? I wish I had another KZreadr that I could refer you to but to be honest, one of the reasons I did a chart video was because at that time, there really wasn't a lot of them available on the subject. I will try to get a new one reshot as soon as possible. Angel, I promise that you will have that "lightbulb" moment and once you get it, you'll LOVE charts! Thanks again, for bringing your struggle to my attention. : - )

@@WynnKnit You're a gem, Nancy, honestly. My heart aches, feeling in a panic that this beautiful art will be lost forever if we don't step up to the plate and get enough of us to learn it before it's gone forever. I just turned 60 and literally know no one who knits aside from myself. I agree 100% with the others. If you could make a video teaching us from start to finish, all the steps in following the graph as well as the blocking, you will have made so many of us truly thankful. I can see in the comments that many want to learn. We just need a good teacher. I believe what you say, once my lightbulb moment happens, I might actually shed some tears of joy. I promised my Memere to pass the knowledge on to my own children one day. I don't want to break that promise to her. I loved her dearly. I am so excited and I thank you in advance for caring enough to do this for those of who truly have a desire to keep this artform alive.

@elenshina: The 'no stitch' is the representation for stitches not yet there. This is a triangular pattern, so you start with a few stitches and increase, then you have to figure out when to start repeating the pattern in the blue box, because there will be too many stitches to fit the original pattern.

I figured :) Thanks again Nancy. After a day of playing around with a homemade excel pattern, I figured out the chart. I inadvertently figured out another chart for the Circlet Cardigan. This one had a different repeat for every size, and working increases in for the arms were charted as repeats as well and so on... I'm starting to get the picture!

The problem I am having is that my work is in the round but it has a faux seam on each side. So I start with the first two knit stitches, then I do the repeat stitches several times, then do I end with the stitches outside the repeat, or do I end with the repeat, then do the faux seam? I guess my question is, do I do those 'ending' stitches outside of the repeat twice (at the end of each side), or once at the end of the pattern?

Hi, thank you for your video. Unfortunately because I’m dyslexic knitting charts are both hard to see and incredibly confusing. Many dyslexics have short term memory problems so you have to keep returning to the legend and it becomes exhausting and overwhelming after a while. For me, a perfect tutorial would be a visual demonstration of working from the chart. So, you would show how to work from the chart by actually knitting. Many learners need a visual demonstration instead of just “talk and chalk”. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with your video, and I thank you for your guidance, sadly it hasn’t eased any of the horrors of knitting charts. The best knitting patterns for me personally are written instructions that tell you at the end of each line how many stitches on the needle. It’s so frustrating, I would love to be able to knit something more interesting than a rectangle. I did find wonderful instructions in a pattern once on ravelry for knitted leaves that included quite complicated stitches and short rows, the instructions were so well written that I could do it. Unfortunately most patterns aren’t written so clearly or are just these confounded charts, which have brought me very close to giving up knitting. 😔

Hi Nancy, I'm not new to charts. When it comes to Aran knitting, I'm very experienced. However, I'm doing my first knitted shawl, the Gardner shawl by Joyce Fassbender. It's a square lace shawl knitted from the center out. I'm working the A panel now but starting at the B panel, there are red box repeats. I'm confused. Here's an example : (Work rows 1-24 twice. 296 Sts. at end of section) (Move markers between stitch pattern repeats one stitch marker to the right on rows 7,15,23. Work boxed repeat pattern 3 times and 7 times for the second.) I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Do you have any advice?

Hi Bill, Thank you for contacting me. I went out on Ravelry and looked at the shawl...it's gorgeous! Here is my advice,I often take graph paper and draw out what they are telling me to do and 9 times out of 10 it works. Next go to the source and contact the designer. Believe me, they want you to succeed so that you'll continue purchasing her patterns. And finally, contact KnitPicks as she obviously used their yarn. For all you know, there could be a problem with the pattern! Wish I could be of more help but without actually seeing it, there isn't a lot I can add ; - ( Let me know what works....

I had the same question concerning the chart you are using in this video. I don't understand how you start with two bound off stitches, then have two knit stitches, and how many SHOULD you have when you're done, and what is the method the chart wants? I'm trying to visualize what this does to the knitting project. Does this make a picot type edge? The charting in this instance is utterly confusing to me. Perhaps if you demonstrated the beginning, how to begin with bindoffs on the chart? If we could actually see your doing it on needles it might be easier to understand what the chart means for us to do. Beginning a piece with bindoffs jolts my head. I'm hoping there's a method that the chart means and I won't have to "Guess & Mess Up" a few time before the chart actually makes sense, should I run into this in a project.

Oh Ann, I'm so sorry you're struggling with this. Let me try to explain this in a different way. First of all, this is no reflection on you and it's problematic for a lot of knitters. I say that because I don't want you to think badly of yourself for being confused. Once you get it I think you'll love charts! Okay, I'm assuming you understand the basic RS/WS knit purl chart instructions, correct? It's the dreaded NO STITCH that's making you crazy, right? If you look at a chart that has no stitch or the black boxes that represent no stitch there will be something that these types of charts have in common; they all have increases and decreases. Charts are usually shaped like a square or rectangle. Within that box, the designer tries to replicate what the design will look like upon completion. What you're fretting about is loosing a stitch that doesn't exist - yet! And most of time it's overthinking the words NO STITCH that sends the knitter over the edge! The best advice I can give you is trust the designer and don't look above the chart line you're working. In fact, I tell my students to take a sheet of paper and cover up everything above the working row.The increases will create the stitch needed to fill the no stitch box. In other words, it might be easier to look at it as a designated spot for a future stitch to come or go a limbo box. Did any of this make sense or did I confuse you more? Please let me know. Thanks and Good Luck....I hope I clarified it a little more for you. : - )

I've also had a lot of trouble translating the "No Stitch" blocks from a chart, because I automatically want to think that this block always means that you do something. But, finally, I'm managing to grasp that the "No Stitch" block just means "Ignore This Space And Do The Next Thing." Things tend to line up the way they're intended as long as I remember to just ignore those "No Stitch" blocks and move on to the next block. I hope this helps.

+Handmade Stitch By Stitch When knitting in the round, every line is read from right to left which is considered the right side of your work whereas the wrong side of your work is done on the chart rows that read from left to right. Are you asking what Slip Marker means? If you are, then when you get to the marker, you just take the marker off the left hand needle and put it on the right hand needle and continue knitting the pattern. This way the marker stays in the same place on rows as you move up the pattern and doesn't stay in a certain row, getting left behind.

The video was okay. Yet I think the chart could surely use one symbol for knit or purl? The odd and even rows are written out and would be a right or wrong side always? Why complicated the pattern so much with the same symbol meaning different things on different rows. You never explain how to figure out how many stitches to cast on our that the numbers on the side are row numbers.

Think of it this way, it's no different than reading a written pattern that designates the repeat with an asterisk. For example the written form of WS row 16 (being read from left to right) would say slip 1 with yarn in back, Purl 10, Knit 1, Purl 4, Knit 2, *Purl 4, Knit 2*, repeat from * to * until 4 stitches remain, knit last 4 stitches. Does that help make it more clear?
