@@purvesh485 People don't even know what Gitanjali actually is - a poem collection or something else. The truth is - even hard core Indian readers haven't read Tagore Sir, not even I. That's something I always regret about, yet never put forth me to read it. That's strange to think why is it so. Maybe because I haven't listened anyone talking about 'Gitanjali', that can be a reason, I don't know, but this is it. What do you think Sir why is it so?

When I show people my books they saw "I am already stuck in the course books I don't even have time to read these" or "who is gonna read this book" I also don't have time

Wonderful tips, Shruti. You were bang on about not understanding every word in a novel. There is really no need to. And when you keep reading, you find that you start understanding more and more of the "difficult parts" without help. Your example about Pride and Prejudice was also so relatable !!! It is my absolute favorite book in THE world. And I read it when I was around 11. I remember not understanding more than half of the text. But somehow I could just understand the broad storyline and I simply loved it. Another tip that I would like to add is to use an annotated edition. I make it a point to read either the Penguin or Oxford World Classics editions of classics because they explain a lot of the obscure references and also provide detailed notes on the sociocultural and historical context of the novel. That makes reading the text a lot more holistic experience for me. Overall your content and presentation is brilliant !!! Do keep making such videos.

@@kuntaldey944 Oxford World Classics also have good notes. I generally prefer those because in Penguin classics, many times the endnotes contain spoilers, which beats the whole purpose of giving annotations in the first place. Price wise Oxford Classics are expensive though, so I buy used copies.

@@fandomnewbie You bet it is !! In my Oxford World Classics edition of Frankenstein, the supplementary material is almost the same number of pages as the actual novel. Includes notes on all the changes made by the author in the subsequent editions. Similarly, Great Expectations includes Dickens' working notes, the alternate ending he discarded, etc. All this in addition to the introduction and explanatory notes on terms or references that might be difficult to understand for the modern reader.

Whenever I'm having any difficulty, related to books then I don't know how but you always come with the perfect video 😍😍 I just love your suggestions ☺️😃

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. There is nothing as intimidating as Russian classics.

Though I've not tried yet, but what i learnt from some of my friends who are Literature students that Russian literature from Atlantic publication is THE best(very pricey too!), though, vintage classics of Dostoyevsky translated by Peaver and Volokhonsky is second best.

In that case I will say you're absolutely mistaken. Start Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Choose your translation well. I'll advise Maud's translation which is available in Penguin Russian classics. It's waaaaaayyyy easier than Jane Austen or Charles Dickens. Won't say anything about Dostoevsky though because it IS difficult. But to me every ounce of my effort was worth it. I read crime and Punishment 3 months back. I'm planning to reread it with a separate translation.

@@rajib17cmc thanks for your opinion. I've read Anna Karenina from Fingerprint Publisher, I don't know the translator, it was not mentioned in the book, but it was some piece of literature. Tolstoy penned tiniest emotions felt by human beings, sometimes unknowingly, in this book. And its vast, covering multitude of topics in it. It was a voluminous book, but i was addicted and finished it in not many days. Obviously War and Peace I'll pick up very soon, but I want to read Crime and Punishment first. So, can you please mention the publisher and translator which will be a balance between easiness to digest this classic, as well as maintains much of original essence.

@@kuntaldey944 hi Kuntal, actually my reply was intended towards Shruti and as I like her the most among all indian book tubers and somehow I felt our sensibilities match in terms of reading taste, I was disappointed to learn that she won't give Russian literature a chance. I'm pretty sure she'll be hooked to Anna Karenina from the very first paragraph as I did and you did too I guess. I don't think publishing house matter so much as the actual translation. I prefer Everyman's library edition which are superb.

Wanted to read The Girl with the dragon tattoo and saw your video

As a season reader, (kind of), books by Somerset Maugham really threw me off because I'm used to reading books with a solid story line. But as you keep reading them you realize that it's one of those books where you come for the story but stay for the writing. Such beautiful writing, so brilliantly written..it took me a lot of time to understand the underlying british humour but once you do, it's definitely worth the read.

When I read a book firstly I don't understand so many words , so I get disappointed and stop reading books

I recently choosed to read *The Autobiography of a Yogi* and it has soo many difficult words and sentences which I was trying to seach frequently but I guess these tips will help me .. thank you soo much

I am also at the beginning of my reading journey. My process of reading is a little bit different from yours. I read the book thoroughly first. Then read this with meaning and write down its meaning on the paper. I want to improve my English so I reread the book by its meaning.

one more thing that help many people to go through difficult book is watching the adaptation before reading the book. for example, I gave my friend the fellowship of the ring and he couldn't read it because it's flowery, poetic and tbh difficult. so i suggested him to watch the movies first then read the book, he was blown away by the movies and then came to the books with a lot of enthusiasm and he had a ready-made images of characters and scenes from the movies which helped his imagination a lot while reading. so that's the hack that I suggest people to get started peace✌🏻

Hey Rajanya! I think the problem might also be that "The Hate You Give" is meant for mature teens. Meaning around 15 or 16+ years old. I would suggest you give up on it completely and read it when you're older. I think you'll have a much better experience that way ❤️

Useful one! Thanks. I generally follow the first and second for tough books, specially classics. As rightly said, looking for every other word in the dictionary will ruin the rhythm of reading. Also, I do check 'Ted-Ed' and 'School of Life' channels to get an idea about the authors and try to familiarise with their writing style, it helps me to some extent. On that note, can I try to read Dickens once again?? Probably not 😪 More to be considered in case of translated classics, be it translator, publisher. A great deal of research and help from the people who actually read those books are required in those cases. Because when you are trying to get into Russian or Greek literature and you have huge expectations, you don't want to spoil the entire thing because of poor translation, page quality, no foreward etc.

@@fandomnewbie try Tolstoy atleast. I've read Anna Karenina and Tolstoy captured very minute to minute human emotions which sometimes betrays the person him/herself, like sense of envy, rage or delight even when his/her face isn't expressing so.

@@fandomnewbie Never say never 🙂. There are books that I left halfway back in college, just couldn't get through them. And now, around 10 years later, not only have I read them, they are among my favourites. Specifically for authors that we find intimidating, mostly it's just a question of getting used to their writing style. You'd be surprised to know, Dickens' work, when he was writing, was not even considered intellectual enough. It was considered more of commercial fiction, rather than real literature !!

Ulysses is the one book I started reading but couldn't make to the End.

If you feel any English classic tough to read - especially big buddies, try other books from the same author. I use this technique. Try to Read Dubliners by James Joyce, an anthology of Short stories about people of Dublin. I'm currently reading this. Another technique is trying the author's earlier, initially written novels. Like, I started Tolstoy a year ago with his "Childhood, Boyhood, Youth" - his first novel - I bought the penguin classic, I felt the translation was easy and good. Currently reading his "The Resurrection"

Hi Sonal! The books are all set in the same world, but the stories have nothing to do with each other. I haven’t read The Mortal Instruments books because I haven’t heard very good things about them. I read The Infernal Devices (this is a prequel to Mortal Instruments) and I understood everything. And nothing about MI is spoiled. So you can start with either, no worries. But there are some books in the Shadowhunter world for which you need to read in order. But you’ll figure that out once you dive into the shadowhunter universe 😊

Moby Dick, it is absolute disaster for me. Language is way too tough and it was to the point that the writer actually admits in the book itself that he used a Thesaurus to write the damn book. And what's worse it is whaling encyclopaedia and the core story is hardly 30 percent but rest of just pages and pages and pages random facts about whaling practise

If u have problem with the language and vocabulary, then try abridged version - not the original version written by the author, but re edited for beginner level readers.

Tale of two cities is so intimidating... I have picked it up twice but fail to reach even 50 pages.

Depends on your interest. Pride and Prejudice is a love story set in 1800s England and focuses on the lives of women and noblemen in that era.

I really have a bad habit. I keep on re-reading a single sentence or a word(even with the beginner books), I self-doubt myself so much whether I understood or not. It sounds stupid but it is ruining my speed limit and sometimes interest too. Iam working on it.I hope you will give me some tips too

It basically portrays life of a higher class gentleman of Russian society and story of the person raising her daughter up to teenage. You'll have insights of Russian socio-cultural and political background. I loved this book.

Yes it does. It has detailed summaries and analysis. Which is why it should be used as a companion to reading. Once you’re done reading the book/chapter you can consult Sparknotes.
