How to Raise Steam in a Locomotive at Peter's Railway

Ғылым және технология

Christopher Vine’s series of 20 books tell the story of Peter and Grandpa building and operating a railway across their farm.
The Peter's Railway bookshop is here: petersrailway.com/shop/ “Combining real engineering with adventures and true stories, these books feed inquisitive young minds!”
In this video Chris Vine lights the fire and explains the process of preparing a steam locomotive for running.
Bongo (or Fiery Fox in the books) is the miniature steam locomotive, made by Chris Vine, Author of the Peter's Railway series of books.

    How on earth do you make the parts so very small and yet maintain function? Those oil pipes alone are so tiny but yet they function and the size of all the plumbing in the cab and such small valves and yet operational at boiler pressure for the injectors. Absolutely amazing. I take it everything is the correct 1:1 scale by the looks? ❤

  • @PetersRailway

    @PetersRailway

    3 ай бұрын

    Hi, Good question! The answer is that it is quite difficult. In truth, the fittings are not truly to scale, so sometimes they are a little larger but in the correct proportions. A good example is the two mechanical lubricators on the running boards. These are in fact 50% oversize to allow the internals and a supply of oil. No one has ever noticed because they are the right shape and have many of the details you would find on the originals. The oil pipes are 1/16" outside dia, with a very tiny hole through the middle. luckily, oil, unlike water, still flows slowly through tiny holes and anyway, the flow rate is almost non-existent! The pressure isn't a problem - as it gets smaller, the pressure has less area to act on. However, injectors on models do not normally work up to 120 psi, so these are adjusted/tuned to work a little higher. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. Years ago I visited the live steam club out by Gary Indiana. They had live stream trains of various gauges even a little full size narrow gauge. A beautiful gasoline powered Zephyr too. But of all the trains I saw and rode on, the steam loco of the in this video gauge was my favorite. The way is sounded and felt was so satisfying. Fascinating hobby, I am in awe of the time and talent it takes to build and run these marvelous little machines.

    Something I’ve been taught to do is when steaming a boiler from cold is to shut the bottom shut off on one of the sight glasses and leave the top valve on and then open the drain, which allows all the excess oxygen to vent out of the boiler and also gives you an indicator when the boiler has started to make steam (this also gives the boiler abit more life as it reduces oxygen in the boiler to corrode the boiler)

  • @PetersRailway

    @PetersRailway

    9 ай бұрын

    That is a cunning idea! My boiler is made of copper so probably corrosion isn’t a concern. However to show when steam is up it’s a good plan. I usually use the injector steam supply which shows up at the injector overflow. Chris If you would like to know more about the books I write please see www.petersrailway.com

    Very Good!! Yes, I had not noticed the cobwebs while filming, or even seen them when watching it later. However, I am not too worried - any spiders in webs that size would be much too big to fit down the spout of the tea pot... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. If you would like to know about the books I write to teach children (age 3 to 90!) about railways, science and engineering, there’s lots of info here: petersrailway.com/
