    Hey John, it took me about tutorials which were promptly ended within a minute or so, because the instruction was too loosey-goosey. I like straight, succinct instruction that provides information in an organized manner because that's how my brain works. This presentation is such a blessing! Very well done, sir! Hey John, new subscriber here and video looks great. I am about to convert my front patio into interior living space with my permit already approved. The front patio is covered with a roof and same as this garage conversion where it is lower and needs to be leveled so your demonstration here is exactly what I needed. Quick question, how would you level the joist if the floor is sloping downwards like how I have my patio. I was thinking of leveling the perimeter by using wooden block and shims and then using joist hangers in between to hold the middle joist? Any suggestion is appreciated.

  • @JohnCRV

    @JohnCRV

    Жыл бұрын

    I would use wooden block and shims as you mentioned, depending on the size gap and would glue them with construction glue. Joist hangers will do fine on for mid-joists. Sounds like you got it 👍

    Hi John, this is a very helpful video for me. I am in the process of converting my garage into living space as well. I was wondering if you need a moisture barrier or something on top of the slab before placing the stud rails and joists? Sorry if this is a stupid question. This is my first rodeo with renovations after hurricane damage last year. (I am in the gulf area). House is on a slab..single story.

    From the research I did; No plain wood is advised directly on concrete floor except treated wood. If you noticed, this floor had ceramic tiles, That should count for something against moister but I went a little further by using treated wood, plus added Roof Deck Seam Tape between the floor and the joists. A little bit of an overkill according to a contractor. He suggested a sheet of plastic would have been sufficient. My opinion, It all depends how long you want it to last. I hope that helps and not confuse you even more.

    Grazie mille Giuseppe per il bel commento. Riguardo ai politici; il problema è che non c'è responsabilità quando non riescono a rappresentare le persone che hanno promesso di rappresentare. Finché non avranno nulla da perdere continueranno a rubare e mentire alla gente e il popolo continua a pagare il loro stipendio pure. Che scherzo! Sfortunatamente questo è il modo in cui funziona la democrazia, ecco perché non dura. Finché qualcuno non arriva e prende il sopravvento e li caccia tutti fuori dal paese. Questo accadrà, non si sa quando ma accadrà come è accaduto per migliaia di anni. E' il peccato più grande quando lasciamo che la storia si ripeta invece di imparare da essa. Ora capisco quando mio padre diceva "E' la stessa storia" Stai sempre forte mio amico della Sicilia.

    Follow up on a question from a much earlier comment. If the garage is flat, your wood grid system will work and looks very sturdy. Therefore, costly concrete would have to be used if the floor is slanted, correct? Are there any other less expensive options?

    Depending on the degree of the slant I would definitely use shims. Using treated wood, you can make your own or use the plastic amzn.to/3MCUMGO

    @John C RV Well, thank you, John, for the reply. Based on the height of the house slab, from the back of the garage, the floor slopes from about a 3 inch difference, for about 15 feet, to 4 inches then for the last 10 feet or so to the door, it slopes from 4 to 6 inches. What do you think? I could see rigging various things that would act as a shim. Your grip would still be cheaper than concrete? What do you know about issues with concrete meshing with existing slab? Thanks. Just trying to know what's out there before talking to contractors. Thank you.

    Let me first say, I prefer concrete over wood any day... If done right with rebars drilled into the surrounding old concrete, you should have no problems. But, the price difference is huge, especially these days. It's also permanent. Where wood can be taken apart if you change your mind someday or if you sell the house and the new owner plans to have a garage. Back to shimming, It will be a bit tedious but it can be done by building the joist floor first without screwing it to the surrounding walls, then level it with treated wood strips and shims using construction glue and brad nailing. Once that's done, you can screw the side joists to the walls (Before installing the plywood) Hope this helps. Good luck on your project.

    Hi John, great video. We are hoping to do this to our one car garage approx 12x20 South Fl. Floor is solid with vinyl. Roughly how much to get that done and any tips re waterproofing, humidity, bugs etc?

  • @JohnCRV

    @JohnCRV

    Жыл бұрын

    Around $300.00 for screws and lumber and vinyl plank flooring, before covid and keep in mind I only had to do 10 feet because the other 10 feet was already done. I used pressure treated wood, not to worry about termites. Waterproofing; in case it gets wet I used the Roof Deck Seam Tape 4" x 66.7': amzn.to/3bPeiQ9 taped it under the wood that touched the floor and acts as a sound buffer. Probably an overkill but it made me feel better. Caulking the molding around the floor, seals it very well, no worries about bugs.

    Just for that floorspace - no framing? Given that we are doing double that size, its a choice of amateur DIY lumber frame or a professional to pour cement as a pour would be roughly 6k but at least its done and dusted. How long did it take to complete the floor/room?

    At 5:45, the second course of plywood should have started with a half sheet so the joints of the adjoining rows are staggered...always best to avoid joints of adjacent rows being in line. Well done otherwise.
