When I was researching about the ways to teach my child Russian and English, I found that there weren’t many real life examples. I hope that this video and more in the future will help families who are bilingual!

I'm so here for this video, my husband speaks to my children in Dutch and I speaking in English. I did worry about the confusion but was informed that they won't. my little one started speaking later also. my daughter only watched Dutch language on television. We don't allow English music or television in the house, the reason is my husband who speaks Dutch is at work all day and it's the only way that I can saturate my kids into the Dutch language ☺️ x

I’m saving this for a few years down the line when I have a kid. I’m glad I’m getting some advice on Russian specifically. Even if it works on many, it is the one I plan on teaching my kids other than English.

I'm pilipino and my wife is Latin American and we living in Australia, I have two twins and we have this rules that when we are at home we only speak Spanish but when we are outside we used English and when the kids are with they Grandama or cousin they speak Pilipino tagalog, hey and it works now they are trilingual.

Thank you for this, you gave me hope lol :) I have 14 month old twins and they are not really talking much right now. So I'm quite worried to even teach them all 4 languages I know. I'm Filipino as well and my husband prefers to speak in English with them because his younger brother got confused with language as a baby. So my plan is to speak to them in Tagalog, my husband in English, my parents in Bisaya and French when they start school. Hopefully it works like you guys did. *crossfingers*

I just had a baby girl and between me and my partner we are fluent in four languages. I'm British (English), he's Sudanese (mother tongue Masalit, fluent in Arabic), we speak English at home and Hebrew is the community language because we live in Israel (like you did!). Any tips on how to teach the four languages? I'll speak with her in English, Adam in Masalit (it's very important to him to pass on this language), Hebrew at school and Arabic...... how do we add in the Arabic? It would be such a shame to give up on it - it's the majority language in Sudan and the common language of the Sudanese community here in Israel and of course neighbouring countries. Do you have any thoughts, ideas or tips for us? Thanks for this video :)

Wow that’s one language-abundant family 👍🏻 adding a 4th language may be done via another person, for example is there a grandparent or aunt/uncle that can dedicate this language to your girl? If not, can Adam spare an hour a day to that language. Is there a language school & does classes perhaps. Another option may be TV - I’ve heard many people learn English from watching the show Friends, there’s no reason why a child can’t do the same with another language. Hope this helps and keep at it coz it’s not easy!

In Luxembourg it's quite normal for children to learn 4-6 languages. Normally, the parents start with two languages (their native languages - for Luxembourgish families this is Luxembourgish first but cartoons etc. are in either german or french depending on family preferences). Then a third language is introduced when they are around 3 (usually german or french) and English is learned at school and culturally when they are 6+. We're using English and Luxembourgish with the baby, then german, then french, both of which they'll also learn at daycare and preschool. However, the baby will be exposed to Turkish and Mandarin through family friends and, though they won't learn the languages this way, they'll be familiar with the sounds which can help language learning later on.

I also read English books in Spanish, but yesterday he asked me for the first time what the actual words say on the book. Did you ever have this happen? Now I’m wondering if I should write the words in Spanish below the ingles so he can see both sets of words.

Hello, yes my son has done similar so I would tell him what it says and then translate it. I think it’s a great idea to write underneath too though so that they can see the language as well as hear it.

Such a wonderful video. I’m from Brazil and pregnant with my first daughter 🤰🏻 (8 months here). I want to talk to her in English and my husband in Portuguese. But I’m also a sign language interpreter in my town and I saw some videos about how can we communicate with babies using sign language. Because they don’t know how to talk, so using signs there’ll be no problems. My question is: how can we do that? It’s going to be three languages at the same time. In my case it’s Brazilian Sign Language, Portuguese and English. I’m pretty confusing about it. Can you help me, please?

Although I don’t know much about sign language, perhaps you can combine this with English and therefore you’ll be teaching 2 languages at the same time. If not, perhaps choose a particular time of the day that you speak either in sign or English and speak the other language for the rest of the day so that the child knows for example in the morning we only speak sign. Best of luck, all the hard work with pay off i am sure of it 👍🏻

I don’t know if you’re still looking for advice but I would just show English sign while speaking English and Portuguese while speaking Portuguese. If they respond to English with Portuguese sign then switch to Portuguese and don’t schooled in English and vise versa 🤍

Моему малышу 5 месяцев, я говорю с ней исключительно на русском с рождения, а мой мужчина на португ. Как вы рекомендуете вводить английский язык? Мы оба свободно им владеем.Вы можете поделиться какими пособиями вы пользуетесь для обучения/планируете пользоваться? Какие книжки по обучению 2/ 3 м языкам мне стоит почитать ?

I’ll be honest to say that the more books you have the better in all those language but you need to still to the language you’ve decided to speak to them in. So you read the Russian books and your partner in Portuguese. I assume you’re in an English country if you’re speaking English so I wouldn’t worry about that third language too much, this is the one that’ll be taught by nursery & school. However if it isn’t then it’s something that you’ll need to do together - If it’s the language you both speak then you’ll need to have English books that you BOTH take the child through, and regularly. Hope this helps

I am raising a child as multilingual - Russian, Ukrainian from he was born and German from 2 years. Now he is 3 years old and he is perfectly speaking Russian, and mix it with Ukrainian, understand German and speaks a little. So now I think about how I should teach him reading?

English if I want everyone at the table to understand but I do translate as well so my kid knows the Russian version of what I’m saying. It’s hard work but after years of doing it I do it automatically.

My wife is English. Im from Moldova, my first language is Russian. I speak to our baby in both languages. I always say the same thing in both languages to the baby. But in our family everyone speaks English and I am the only who speaks to the baby in Russian . It's hard when you are the only one who speaks Russian to the baby while everyone speaks English.

It’s VERY hard but as long as you know what your motivation is, don’t give up and it’ll all be worthwhile :)

I have the same problem.My child is half Polish and half Scottish (we are in Poland currently).My son is 2years old now and he is not speaking much (only few words in Polish or in English).So maybe bilingual children are speaking latter then usual

It’s hard to say because I have 2 nieces who did have speech delay but then not in my own son (who is now nearly 4), he was an early talker. Keep teaching them regardless because in my opinion your son will start talking soon & then he’ll have the benefits of being multi lingual!

Great tips! Except maybe the last one to let your young child watch TV. Most child pediatrics found evidence that's children who are exposed to screens at a young age (before ca. 2 years of age) have a harder time to develop cognitive skills as well as their delay of gratification ☝️

Good question! I'm not Jewish because it gets passed on by the mothers side (and in this case it's my dad that's Jewish.) The main reason however is that when we moved from Israel to London when I was around 8 I had no practice /tutelage so I quickly forgot it whilst learning (in primary school) English which is now my dominant language.

This actually really helps me, I am no where near ready to have children (as I am very young). But me and my boyfriend were talking about having kids one day and I realized I really want my kids to be able to communicate with my family in Spain. I live in America now, but I was born in Spain and lived there until I was 11. I’m still fluent in the language, problem is I have no one to practice my Spanish with. I want to be a good mom so bad lol

I’ll be honest, once my nan died I also stopped speaking Russian & my language actually improved WITH my baby because I kept talking Russian to him & learning more words because I had to know them for him (using Alexa and Google translations if not family). I hope this gives you encouragement 🙏🏻👍🏻
