👉🏻 How To Back your Trailer Down a Ramp • How To Back Your Boat ...
You had an awesome day on the water and now it is time to get your boat OUT of water and on the trailer. So now what!? Boat ramps can be intimidating! This episode will not only teach you how to pull your boat out of the water but ALSO how to get it ready for the road because we don't want you getting a ticket! Plus, we go over some ramp etiquette so you don't become "THAT GUY."
We have seen many boaters on the road trailering their boat without strapping it down! 😳 But don't worry, we go over that too. We just upgraded our straps to the #CURTMFG ratchet tie-down straps with a working load of 1,1000 lbs and a break strength of 3,300 lbs!

Your instructions are all well and good. With 30 plus years of trailer boating, my technique is a bit more streamline. I back the trailer in deeper at the ramp until the top of the back finders are just at water level. I can then drive the boat onto the trailer until the keel is centered. With the motor engaged, look on both sides of the boat to confirm there is equal fender / trailer frame showing. Then with boat centered, power up driving the boat to the bow roller--- hook the winch and safety chain. One turn on winch handle and all is snugged down. This approach has served me with a 24 ft. stern drive cabin boat, a 17 ft. CC and now a 20 ft. CC. I enjoy your channel and it is a rare time that I do not learn new techniques. ie, Steer then gear......

Good video. I'm sure the towing experts are zooming in on every angle they can get, checking laws across 50 states, estimating chain length and its distance to the ground, and ensuring there were no twists in the ratchet straps. The dog ear thing was a neat trick. Thanks for that.

Been learning to drive a 21' boat for a year. Love your videos. My wife is great, she learned to back up the trailer and is as good as anyone on the ramp. Things we have learned together loading the boat: (1) It's not like driving a car. Steer before gear slows everything down for you and buys you time to think. (2) We have carpeted bunks. Back the trailer in further to get the whole bunk wet, then pull out to your best loading position. This helps the boat slide on the trailer carpet easier. (3) Do not have the trailer too deep when loading or the stern will float off or over the trailer sides. (4) Once the trailer wheels are in the water, back in slowly to allow the trailer to sink otherwise it can float off at an angle in any current. (5) If you can't drive around a busy dock while waiting your turn, learn to hold your boat in position nudging throttle backward or forward. Drifting around in the wind or current can cause problems around other boats, rocks or sea walls when you try and regain control in a hurry. (6) Finding the right momentum and angle of approach to the trailer for the wind and current conditions is tricky. Too slow can get you into trouble with the wind, too fast can mean damage your boat or other boats. takes a while to get experience.

Just a quick note. You do not have to use the Yamaha "wedge". Your engine comes with a build in wedge at 16:32 you can see the wedge just above the transom bracket, its flipped up - flip that down. Then it will sit on the transom bracket holding the load of the engine... Just like what you do now.. but build into the motor... :)

I gotta say, this is a great tutorial. I’ve only had my boat for about a year and it’s safe to say that recovery is the worst part about boating. Launching isn’t so bad but getting back on the trailer can be stressful. The pointers I took today, “steer before you gear” and “going into the wind into current”. Such an easy idea that I never thought of. I’m definitely going to be using these ideas going forward. Thanks again for the easy to follow content.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve watched a family load their gear while blocking the ramp…then turn their batteries on…then put their Bimini up…oh and apply sunscreen to their kid, THEN start their boat and get out of the way. Florida boat ramps can induce madness. Great video, as always ladies!!

A helpful tip for checking trailer lights, turn on your parking lights and your emergency flashers (same part of the bulb on the trailer that flashes and lights up for braking). The parking lights let you check all the marker/ running lights. The flashers let you check the functionality of the turn signals and brake lights all at the same time. This eliminates yelling left ?? Ok right?? Ok brakes ?!?! You’re both awesome and we love the videos !!!

Good job girls. Just need to stay on the port side of the trailer when extending the winch strap to the bow eye. The PIN and the handle are on the port side and the spare tire is out of the way on the starboard. The winch has F-N-R. When you put the PIN in the Neutral position you can pull on the winch strap to the bow eye and the handle won't spin out of control. Keep the PIN, spring and shaft lubricated with WD-40 or the like. Now go out there and find that Neutral position and pull the strap out. Would like to see a vid doing everything solo with that roller trailer.

New subscriber, you girls are great! I find guide polls are extremely helpful not only for loading the boat but also for backing an empty trailer down. I also disconnect my lights when the trailer is in the water to avoid any potential live shorts. Keep up the great work.

The one tip I have (and this being KZread, I am sure someone will disagree) is to always cross your trailer chains under the ball hitch. In the event that Murphy's law decides that today is the day that it is going to show you who is boss, the tongue of the trailer will fall onto the X made by your safety chains and not dig into the highway at 65 MPH.

Suggestion: Put tow vehicle in 4WD (if you have it) at the ramp. Always use parking brake when holding. Have chocks on hand and use if holding for any length of time. I use them when launching/landing solo as it’s less streamlined than with two people.
