How To Back Your Boat Down a Ramp *2 WAYS* Launch The RIGHT Way

How To Back Your Boat Down a Ramp 2 WAYS Launch The RIGHT Way
🎣 SHOP 🎣 Gale Force Rods & Gear: GaleForceFishi...
Whether you call it splashing your boat, launching your boat, or backing your boat down a ramp...we know it can ALL be intimidating. In this video we give you the steps we use to correctly back your boat down a ramp. We take the time to show you how to splash your boat when you have the ability to set up your truck and your trailer perfectly straight in front of the ramp AND we give some tips on backing your boat down a ramp that might have some tight spaces and tough turns. We hope this tips are helpful to you!
STEP 1: LOAD YOUR BOAT (fishing gear, coolers, life jackets etc.)
STEP 2: PLUG YOUR BOAT AND REMOVE STRAPS (do NOT remove winch strap)
STEP 3: BACK TRAILER DOWN RAMP
STEP 4: START YOUR MOTORS
STEP 5: REMOVE SAFETY CHAIN AND WINCH STRAP
STEP 6: REVERSE BOAT OFF TRAILER

To your checklist you might add (based on my experience of missing things): 1A: Have dock lines attached to cleats if you will need to tie up after launching. Bumpers as well if your ramp does not have good padding. 3A: Make sure your bilge pump is not running like crazy after the transom enters the water (i.e. you forgot step 2). 4A: Make sure your telltale is running (the engine is expelling water which proves the impeller is pulling in water and your engine is cooling). Tight lines!

Love your videos! But in this one case there is a better way to back up with a trailer. As a former truck driver and truck driver trainer I used and taught backing skills A LOT. The method of putting your hands at the bottom of the steering wheel and turning right to go left is what drivers Ed teachers have used for decades and works good for occasional use. Truck drivers are trained to put their hands at 3 and 9, never move either hand past the 12 position. Use your mirrors, do NOT look over your shoulder. Turn the steering wheel toward the mirror with too much trailer in it. You want your trailer to angle (jack) to the right (off side) turn your wheel to the left because you want less trailer on your left. Then to straighten out (chase) your trailer turn your wheel to the right, the side with too much trailer. If you run out of road of course you may pull forward to get straight too. It helps if you think of pushing the trailer rather than backing with a trailer. Try it, it works. In trucking we have a couple basic rules about backing... First rule is don't....lol Second is G.O.A.L. Get Out And Look. Keep making these fantastic videos!

Great. Hopefully lots of folks watch this. Looks like a beautiful day at Markham Park. So, for me, once my trailer wheels are wet, I stop, get out, walk back, remove the safety chain and unwind the winch strap about 1-2' and reengage the winch rachet. Then as you continue to back in the boat will float (and tell you it's ready) and it still is connected. There are ramp grades where keeping the strap and chain on can stress and as you demonstrate you have a lot of stress on that strap. If you give it some slack and reengage the rachet so it won't pay out any more strap, it's stress free. The other big piece of advice for new boaters who will trailer and ramp. Don't go straight to the ramp. Go to a vacant parking lot, set up some 5gal buckets as cones and practice all that backing up in a simpler less busy environment. Lastly, you will always encounter jerks and know-it-alls at the ramp. NEVER let anyone rush you at the ramp. It's a great way and a great place to make mistakes that can cost thousands of dollars, so never let anyone rush you. Great video! Hopefully you are off to catch some Peacock bass.

I usually launch alone, and this is exactly what I do. A couple of feet of slack and the moment you see the boat starts to float you are in deep enough. The boat will never lift the truck causing it to float away and it is quick and easy.

I put the truck in four wheel drive at the ramp before backing down. Many ramps are slippery and if your back tires spin or the trailer goes off the end of the concrete you’re in a tough spot.

  • @davidgudger386
    @davidgudger3862 жыл бұрын

Great video as always ladies. The only thing I will add is never EVER start backing into a tight ramp/space when your trailer is angled away from your target. Backing when your trailer is angled away from your target will only reinforce a bad angle, cause you to overcorrect and put you ‘behind’ on your target. Don’t be afraid to pull up another 10, 20 or 50 feet to at least get straight and ideally get a little angle towards your ramp/space. Keep your lines tight out there! 🎣

First and foremost, you girls are awesome. Second, I would suggest getting an OB motor prop that supports the motor to the trailer. Driving down the road with the motor lifted using the transom as a support could cause some unwanted stress on it if you drive down some rough roads. Just my opinion.

Great Video ladies, did not read all the comments, apologies if this is a duplicate...When you go to release your strap, have the person in the boat put the motor in gear with a little throttle to hold the boat against the bow stop. This will reduce the likelihood of a winch handle incident when you reverse the winch and unhook the strap from the bow eye.

When I had my midlife crisis, I was so stupid and bought a Moomba. I was a nervous wreck with that boat and preferred to load or unload it myself. My point is, can’t tell how many times I oversteered, choked by overthinking the situation, and it takes practice.

At the ramp you can unhook your boat from the strap and chain. All you have to do is take a longer mooring line and attach to a dock cleat ,then drop the boat in the water. The mooring line let's the boat slide off the trailer and keeps the boat at the dock !

Lovely Ladies, may I suggest a simple step to add to your list when backing up? Place one hand, which ever one that you are comfortable with, at the bottom of your steering wheel. Now while backing if the back of the boat needs to go right move tour hand slightly to the right, of left then slightly to the left. The more you use this method the easier it will be the guide your trailer where you want it to go.
