Just used this video to better understand and use my Electra plug-in, and holy damn, what a difference in my mix. My go to EQ going forward. So much range of vibe! Hope you're well. I'd love more videos.
I first watched this video something like 7 years ago. I eventually bought a hardware Electra back then b/c I was so inspired by the intuitive and musical quality of both the EQ, as demoed in this vid, and Greg Scott, more generally. I rewatched this video today and was just as inspired. I'm a Film/TV composer, not an engineer, specifically. In today's market, it's not enough for composers to just WRITE great music; we also have to wear a second hat and produce beautiful sounds. I keep coming back to Kush b/c there's a beauty and musicality to everything Greg does and builds that speaks to the artist in me and helps me get closer to producing beautiful sounds. Respect.
Amazing how you manage to translate all the buzz words to specifical sounds. Very informative and of course awesome sounding unit
An incredible piece of aural beauty. Thanks Greg for bringing us fans of analogue new offerings in a world where (usually) volume rules over dynamics and transients.
This is by far one of the best analog gear demonstration videos with awesome engineering skills. I've learned a lot and hope to be able to afford some Kush gear one day! Great job!
Interesting I now use these videos as meditation to get me focused on writing pieces and how I want them to sound.....thank you! I'll be adding an Electra soon!
Finally some show and tell, thanks so much guys! I downloaded the video from your Vimeo channel for best audio quality. Yet again you've managed to make a unique EQ, it sounds so refreshing. Again thanks alot for the video!

Your videos, gear, and sound are awesome!
The idea of just boosting the living daylights out a band and sweeping to learn the textures of that band on specific instruments has been a massive game changer for me. It sounds so rudimentary but I feel like the way many people learn eq nowadays is so technically focused that many people just use vague associations to describe a general band when they really haven't learned what that band sounds like on a particular source. This type of workflow seems so much more organic and I'm getting much more focused and mid rich sounds where before I was doing way too much subtractive stuff in the mids. I am curious if you tend to do this type of tone shaping before mixing/during the production phase because that seems to make sense to me. I feel like that way you'd be less prone to fill the mix with elements that muddy up the arrangement because the sounds are already speaking in a really full/focused way before you ever even do the mixdown. I'd be very willing to pay to good money just to see what your workflow looks like because I love the sound of your stuff. Even just seeing how you'd mix a really small session would be probably be really illuminating.
Amazing demo! I heard you on the URM podcast recently, and the name stuck while finding some recent vids you've uploaded. I'm learning a ton from your content, I hope you come out with more consistently! Just ordered the plugin subscription, excited to do some mixing tonight

Amazing. Can you elaborate on how you mic'ed the drums for this? If you can be a little more specific, I'd greatly appreciate it! Are they summed 2 mono tracks using different mics placed right and left? Thanks so much.
Hi Greg can you share this amazing sound song, in a multitrack session if it possible
Will you be doing a video on the DSP version?
Will there be a plugin version of The Electra? …I use the Clairphonic DSP all the time. I truly enjoy that thing. Of coarse, if I had the budget, I'd buy all of Kush's hardware.

just wow....thats awesome

How would you got about matching the left and right channels? It would be awesome if you had a stereo link switch that allows you to make changes on one side of unit but affect both channels equally - this would make it more useful on the final 2-Mix or for mastering
so nice sounding filters !!
Hi. I really liked this video :) Would you tell how did you set up the mics for this recording? peter
I've almost bought this unit so many times. It's top shelf, but I always get distracted by guitars, amps, comps. I need to jump on it.
Well, that was 12 minutes well spent. I heard about this EQ from Sound on Sound magazine. I can't afford this... yet... but i learnt a lot... I'm gonna go try some tricks with software drums, splitting to left-right tracks and processing them with different impulse response (to simulate different mic/placement) and different EQ.

What a difference!
Hi Gregory, Love the channel and the work you do! One thing about the Electra DSP plugin I don't quite get is the Oversampling. I checked in plugindoctor if Electra introduces harmonics and it doesn't. And when I activate oversampling it just raises and changes the noise floor a bit and of course cuts over 20k. It also starts preringing the IR so i guess you chose to use FIR... What exactly would be the benefit of using oversampling in Electra DSP? Because all I seem to get are unnecesary artifacts.
@TheHouseofKushTV
3 жыл бұрын
Oversampling changes the phase response, shape, and texture of any filter that bumps up against the nyquist. Whether you like those changes (or even care) is a matter of taste, but the sound is measurably and audibly different. The phase response of the highs, in particular, is less warped, and I generally prefer that. 😊
Would there be any benefit to buying the rack version vs 2 500 series units?

Hey Greg, are both drum busses hard panned in this scenario?
@TheHouseofKushTV
4 жыл бұрын
Yep!
I love this EQ demo. In too many demos the user is being very timid with the controls. Here, Greg cranks each band to the max to find the sweet spots. This is exactly what I do to find "the good stuff" in a sound. That said... I do not like the super-wide sound he has going on for the drums. It doesn't sound natural. But that's definitely an artistic choice, and he's correct that it creates a huge hole in the center for a lead vocal or instrument melody. Cool EQ.
@TheHouseofKushTV
3 жыл бұрын
Awesome observations! And TBH I'm inclined to agree, if I were mixing this today I'd probably be pulling those drum channels in quite a bit tighter. I might even texturize them more aggressively (heavier saturation and more sharpness/crispness up top) and mix them mono, and just have the rhodes be the only wide element. And 7 years from NOW, I'd probably do something else entirely, if I'm lucky enough to still be around and playing with sound!

Can you explain a little more about the transient element of this Eq? Surely transients can appear anywhere on the frequency spectrum? I don't quite understand. Thank you.
@TheHouseofKushTV
4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Transients can (and do) appear across the spectrum. However, any given transient has 'pockets' of energy that are focused in specific areas, and this eq has a special way of drawing them out, enhancing them. Because it has no transformers or electrolytic capacitors in the audio path, it does not slow down transients or distort them in the least, giving the overall effect a very punchy, fast and tight character. Words can only take us so far though, there's a reason this eq is so popular on people's drum busses :-)

sir, im confused, if we eq left channel lets say more low end and eq the right channel lets say more high end, wont it make the final stereo sound more low on left and more bright on right? or this is actually mid/side?
@TheHouseofKushTV
3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. If the left side started with less bass and the right side started with less treble, your hypothetical eq might actually balance out the spectrum. But I understand what you're asking, and my response is, "maybe, but if the music feels good then does anything else matter?" Put another way, your question seems to imply that imbalanced frequency spread is inherently a bad thing, but I do not believe that is true, I Iike contrast and variation in all its forms! But I do not say you are wrong, this is all taste and aesthetics, there are no truths. ☮️
After watching this video over and over I went ahead and got two of these for my 500 unit but...... does it matter that they are not stereo linked for bus duties? they seem to sound rad but I am afraid my ears are not solid enough to miss some phasing or something.

how do you manage phase issues when recording with different mics and hard panning?
@TheHouseofKushTV
3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I may be misunderstanding your question, but I don't understand what 'different mics' and/or 'hard panning' has to do with phase issues? Ideally, you optimize phase coherence at the source by placing the mics in positions where you minimize cancellations and maximize pleasing relationships. This has nothing to do with whether the mics are the same or different (the vast majority of drum recordings involve blends of very different mics), and it has nothing to do with panning; phase relationships are defined by the frequency-over-time relationships between tracks, no more and no less. If your tracks are coherent, there's nothing to manage. If they aren't, there's not much you can do, you just do the best you can with what you have :-)

Ah! I know that story! If you're looking for suggestions, try one of the more foolproof setups (xy or recorderman) for a while on your overheads so you can focus on the direct-to-room ratio without worrying about phase. Pay extra attention to your snare mic's phase relationship with both the kick and the overheads. Keep your setup very simple, like just those 4 mics, until you get an ear for phase, tone, transient, ambience, and image :-)

I want to put them in my rack right now...but as usual, I look at everything...and see on the main board there is a switch (SW3) that appears to set the function for the inner dial inside the HPF (the bottom-most inner dial)...I suspect the default is the "out" position allowing you to adjust the level of what I heard (in Greg's 2015 Sweetwater video about the Electra) is a fixed 90HZ low-shelf...I assume with SW3 in...you get a fixed level but can sweep the center freq. of the shelf...I cannot find documentation about this ANYWHERE...please advise if anyone knows for certain what exactly SW3 does. (bonus points...I assume J1 always stays in DC coupled mode since the power rails in a 500 series chassis are DC...not sure if that is what that jumper is for...but thought I would ask while I am in the question asking mode).
