How To Pull A Transmission at the Salvage Yard

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I'll show you how to pull a transmission at the Pull-A-Part salvage yard. It can be pretty tricky since the use of jacks aren't allowed but in this video I'll show you how it's done!

When we hit day 2, yeah it took us 2 days, it finally dropped into the barrel with the help of a little crowbar looking thing that I found. One of the part pullers guys just happened to be walking by when we dropped it out and he was like"Oh you got to love that sound," because it was loud It was like, BANG Bang! But all in all it was a good time spending time with little bro.

I work at a shop where we pull 5-10 transmissions and rebuild them per week. The transfer case on Chevys and smaller dodges that don't have the nut or bolt on the very bottom before I let the crossmember loose. Rest the front shaft end of the T-case on your knees and use that to direct it. Slide the T-case slowly back until the alignment dowel comes out and get a good grip on the main part and slowly lower it onto your legs and then turn it gently and roll it off of you....lot easier to do. I'm not a strong guy and I can take them down and put them back up without much issue...it's about technique. And remember before you ever let go of that transfer case when you are putting it in, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have 1 bolt minimum holding it in place...

May as well either part out what is left of your jeep or pay a shop to rebuild the one you already have, unless you just want to pull a possible junk one at the yard to rebuild and be ready to drop in...err...lift in.

There's some serious irony going on in not allowing you to bring a transmission jack, but still allowing you to pull a transmission like that. That's VERY shady. The last time I went to one of those places I think they rented jacks for next to nothing. There's also a bit of a fail going on with forgetting to disconnect several bolts and the shifter linkage.

Almost every junk yard doesn't allow Jacks to be used because people don't know how to use them in the dirt or uneven ground. You wouldn't understand if you question why unless you lift a car off a dead man. Using old rims or any metal in that situation makes sense unless you never been there

Hey Matt. Quick question. How much did that transmission cost you? I’m trying to get one for my truck and it’s shows that it’s around 100 plus fees. Is that true? Thank you

Do you reuse the same torque converter or replace with new

Either or... if you knew it was working then keep it. If you have the money, replace it.

Make sure the transmission has fluid in it. Other than that if it isn't moving its time for a replacement or rebuild. Not cheap at all, which is why so many vehicles are scrapped either the engine fails or the transmission fails, and neither are cheap and usually cost more than the vehicle is worth to have replaced/repaired.

They won’t let you use a floor jack for safety reasons but they’ll let you pull a transmission with a vehicle resting on rims, pulling bolts from crossmembers that can crush you when they let go .....all in the name of safety. The junk yard must be owned by Californian politicians. Love the vids🎄

hi, i bought a '95 laredo 5.2 full time 4x4 for $500 but it has no reverse (166,000 miles). i found a '95 dakota 5.2 4x4 (175,000 miles) at pull-a-part, i think it has the 231d transfer case (i couldn't get the tag clean enough to read it). if i use the transmission and transfer case from the dakota am i going to have to custom make new drive shafts or should all this swap out pretty easy? any other issues you for-see me having?

I'm not familiar with the transmission from the dakota but if it mates to the engine I figure it will work out ok... But dont know on the driveshafts either, sorry.

Can you mess up the torque converter or anything in the transmission if you pull it out the same way on the video

I followed the first steps but it didn't drop like it did in the video. I can find anything it's hung up on either. I'm kind of at a stand still because I don't want it to suddenly drop.
