How to Prune a Tree Peony

One of the most beautiful flowers, tree peonies are a showstopper...but most folks don't know how to prune them. They require specific techniques to look their best and live their longest. They're best pruned JUST when the buds are swelling in the early spring. Enjoy...AND SUBSCRIBE (please!)!

Hi Sean, I moved at the end of last year and there is a huge tree peony at the new place it must be over 8 ft tall. I cut a lot of it back I think it was late winter or early spring as it looked very tatty and sad, the property had belonged to an older lady and the garden was generally overgrown. the tree peony has shot up and now there are two buds only on it and they are both on the same stem, right at the very top. Any advice going forward would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I love sharing your videos with our team. I wonder if You Tube ever has the option of adding captions to your videos. We have one deaf gardener and it would be really helpful!

There is an option for auto generated subtitles. Not perfect but does the job!

Thank you! Would you recommend pruning to a lower bud after flowering?

If you have time, yes. It helps keep energy in the plant, making for more flowers next year (Lilacs) and it might promote a second bloom (Spirea) but I wouldn’t bought it with things like Weigela.

What would be a good time to grow from the seeds and how would you go about doing it.

You hit up on something that I didn’t know much about, but here’s an excellent article. It takes a fair bit of time and attention, or you could do what’s called “layering“ to propagate them. Give it a read! :-)
