It's a good point about pruning the growth stems and not the leaves. Made that mistake with a young wisteria which had very few tendrils....
I would love to see a video of you pruning a wisteria that has been allowed to get out of control. We just bought a house with beautiful mature wisteria in the front and back. It has been neglected for many years and I don't know where to start with it. I have watched your pruning videos and they are very helpful, I understand how to do the late summer and winter pruning. However the trunks of our wisteria are like tree trunks with lots of thick off shoots coming out of them, should we cut some of those back?Thank you for the excellent videos. We live in Northern California.
Wow! Would love to see this in full bloom. Thank you for your knowledgeable information! NEW SUBSCRIBER!! Question: When planting for use on a pergola,...... Can you use another climbing plant that would bloom at a different time? Is there a companion climbing plant that could be paired with the Wisteria? My goal is to have more boom time. Realizing the Wisteria has only 4-6weeks bloom time, I was in hopes of the second companion climber blooming after/before the Wisteria. I just don't know if this is possible to do? Maybe a Clematis paired with the Wisteria? I hope you see this comment and will respond. Again, Thank You!
Yes Andy!! I’m fed up with people saying prune twice a year. Cutting out the gobbledygook on gardening 👏

Hello from Boston, MA and thank you for the very helpful instructions I just found, however, I need more help or rather, my wisteria needs help : I had grown it from a twig some 15 years ago and it got out of control, very tall and thick. Can I cut down the wooden trunks and branches to a more manageable hight ?
Great video mate...I have a fair amount to deal with...of course it was planted and trained to run along a 100m verandah. It has wrecked the guttering, down pipes etc. and I've been unsure how to deal with it...and now I do. Thank you kindly...

😀 Thank you - It sounds like you have got your work cut out. I will be making more videos about winter pruning later in the year. That is the best time to tackle any heavy pruning. Thank you for watching 👍🏻
Hello Mr. The Fully Charged Gardener, I've watched all your Wisteria videos and was conviced to try my hand at raising a Lawrence cultivar into a tree, hopefully with a 3-foot tall trunk later on. I bought a non-flowered 1 to 1 & 1/2 year-old plant. It's currently Late July here in Texas, which means good rain and plenty sun. I'm unsure how to proceed with planting it since I've read planting in spring or fall is preferred or if I can plant it anyway. Soil is a clay-dominant, acidic loam. Should I prune it soon after placing it in a pot or wait for next summer or this winter? It has a fair amount of low green branches and a long main whippy shoot. Please let me know what you think.
What Thanks so much for your video. I've been pruning the "whips" back to the main stem and have less flowering. Do you prune off the blossom stems after they have finished flowering? If so, where do you prune them? Appreciate your comment!
Very helpful, thank you! I have a very small one in a pot at the moment to cover a fence - will it stay manageable if I keep it in the pot?
@TheFullyChargedGardener

It will indeed. Just make sure you keep it well watered.
Brilliant! The perfect series of videos on wisteria maintenance. Quick question, is there a preferred time of year to feed a wisteria high pot ash? Ie early on in the year after last prune or throughout the year once summer prune has been done. Sorry to be a pain! Great videos 👍👍👍👍

Do you still have to prune if you are 1st 2nd year forming length and direction of the plant? Flowering is like 4-5 years down the road, correct?
@TheFullyChargedGardener
2 жыл бұрын
Basically you want to keep any growth that you want to for the structure of the plant, timing it in as it grows. any growth that you don't want to be part of the framework of the plant, prune back to 3-5 buds. Hope this is helpful. Thank you for watching.
I'm lost, I'm a new wisteria owner....7 plants, 4, 4ft tall and 3, 2ft tall. I just planted them about 3 weeks ago. I live in upstate New York, and know virtually nothing about caring for them. I need a lot of help please.

Disappointed with this, seemed as if it would be good, but there is simply not enough close visual of what exactly constitutes a stem, and therefore where to cut. Stems on my wisteria seem to grow from other stems, all in some kind of cluster.....Far too much waffle, much of it repeated.
