It sometimes feels as though Hugo is showing us that we are all wretched, and through our wretchedness make others wretched. Paris during this time in history and within this narrative is a microcosm. And in the midst of this narrative Hugo shows us the pearls in souls, molding our conscience, and ultimately imagining for us a world without wretchedness.

Thank you! Hugo was a deeply spiritual man, but he refused to identify with Christianity or any other organized religion.
