I did an update video, worth checking out. Since the update growth has gone completely wild! Next update should look amazing :)

I was watching a video by Josh Sim, and he said the best way to propagate moss, was to mix mix clay, water and java moss together and blend it to make a slurry. Then you just use a paint brush to "paint" it on whatever you want the moss to grow on. He said you get even coverage immediately, and don't have too worry about glues, string, etc. I was considering this method on cheese cloth so that I could have moss "patches" to glue (wrap) around objects. Just throwing that idea out there...

​@@alexmichel237that is wild. When I was young my mother would mix her outdoor garden moss with a bit of milk and spread it everywhere in the yard that she wanted the moss to grow. Worked like a charm.

You can also use Agar Agar for a jellish nutrient rich media like professional tissue culture

Nice video! You can chop moss really fine by mixing it with water and putting it in a blender. Maby you can mix it in the fertilizer solution directly?

I bought a $45 set of master grow powdered fertilizer made for hydroponics. Its been way better than any other hydroponics fertilizer. Ive grown all manner of vegatible plants and some aquatic plants. Ive been using from it for 3 years and barely made a dent in it. In the long term it's a great deal.

Great video, thank you for sharing. I do have a question though. If i have fish tanks that are established, could I use that water instead of Grow or Foliage -Pro? Would the nitrates in the water be enough to feed the moss and allow it to grow?

Great video! Sorry to revisit it after so long, but i was thinking that you could use the entry level fertilizer and mix in some gelatin. Gelatin is great for seedling and leaf growth as it contains high levels of Nitrogen. It will lock in the liquid and fert eliminating evaporation. I would also imagine it will reduce and possibly eliminate algae in cups containing less matter. Just a thought.

I do! I just let the lids naturally rest on the tubs, I’ve never used the latches 👍, I’m feeling hopeful that this setup will work great 🤞

@@AquariumPlantLab I’m so happy to know that. I’ve been keeping mine closed to keep humidity in. BUT I just bought the spray thingie you mentioned in your other video so I can easily mist more often 😁

You could also increase nitrogen in your old ferts by adding ammonia. You’d need to be careful with calculating and measuring the exact amounts. Probably easier and safer for most peeps to just buy the higher N version.

Great results I am working in moss cultivation but the results are not growing fast like this? How could contact you with images may be you could give me an advice ??

What type of light bars are you using?

I am growing like 4x that amount a month in a 4000ml erlenmeyer flask with a handful of pond/bladder snails (like, 4) in there set next to a sunny window. No fertilizer but once a month I'll drop one or two fish food pellets in there

Yeah I have experienced the same,I have setuped my very first planted tank,not a very cool one butvthe point is I have applied few plants in 150l tank with high light and I guess with high levels of nutritions..the plants showed very speed growth but whie ago got an algae issue,so I have cut out the nutritions and the CO2 supplies for testings.the algaes are died after few weeks and now Ihave applied more plants and ofcourse CO2 and fertz..now the alage problem is well balanced...

@@AquariumPlantLab yes,also now I am facing different form of issue,my mosse are getting thiner but rest of the planst are growing healthy,spped too. Have no idea why but my light is DIY and it is quite bright,guess that could be the reason and now I am applied floating plants to make some shade..

Manoj I bought a UV pond sterilizer and ran it inline with my filter....no more algea, standing or free floating BUT I have 2 small filters and only clean them one at a time to promote bio growth. So while one filter is healthy with bacteria the other is clean, and vice versa it cost around 60 usd for mine but worth every penny.

Are you using just plain white led light?

hey what if the solution is mixed with water and boiled with agar. then you can place a thin layer of agar at the bottom of the container and put java moss in it. would this work?

what kind of light you use?

Can i use organic fertilizer?

I tried doing this and followed the system exactly, ordered all the same stuff and used the linked hydroponic plant food...16 days in and all my moss is brown and dying. So sad wish I knew what I was doing wrong.

What type/brand of lights do you use on those setups

u need to drill OUTwards to get an actual low point .... drilling INto the tub , the excess round the hole will form a little 'wall' ... you'll need to sand it down... great channel

How long do you have the lights on for? Also does lumens matter?

Lights are on for 12 hours per day. Lumens aren't too important Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is the important value to focus on :)

@@wenbucha Sure but algea grows underwater so with emersed setup you usually don't need to worry about it, especially if you add drainage layer since all the standing water is going to be there and shaded by your substrate -> no light -> no (or almost no depending on ambient light) algae. But in aquariums yes having too much light promotes algae, but it depends on a lot of factors like excess nutrients in the water but its one of the simplest way to try fixing it.

Most of the visible growth yes, the cups were technically setup for several months but I made a change that really boosted growth and that was a month or so worth of growth most of which is what you see in this video 😁

Aquatic mosses need very high humidity otherwise they will dry out and not grow very tall at all.

Why not a drainage layer of pebbles under some weed cloth?

Thats something I have considered and might explore. My ultimate goal is to be able to grow the moss in mass quantity and make it easy to harvest to sell on my website. I think there are some benefits to having a smooth plastic bottom grow, mainly the moss won't attach to the plastic so it should make harvesting easier and less messy. I also think that once the moss really grows in that drainage will not be much of an issue. But we will see! If drainage continues to be an issue then I would likely look to explore something like what you are describing 👍

One drains excess water, the other catches it. You don't exactly need two but the two of them together helps to minimize algae issues.

You need to start sterilising everything with hydrogen peroxide solution your success rate will increase start looking into tissue culture cleanliness is the key

Definitely true for tissue cultures, and to an extent with a setup like this. But unless the plants are truly grown in a fully contained setup then algae and other pests will always be present to a degree anyway. Would be fun to fully sterilize and see if there are any notable differences! Thanks for the comment 😊

Pretty easy and straightforward to make a sterile environment I grow mushrooms and mould is the enemy rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in a sterile tub and I never get any issues it’s easier to do than you might think washing the plant material in the beginning would help you avoid lots of issues

@@njbaquatics4827 I see your point problem is one of the main reasons this setup works well is because you spray the plants with ferts on a semi regular basis. This requires opening the lid and spraying them, which will almost certainly introduce contaminants everytime you do that. Seems like starting sterile would be a short term benefit as it would be lost. Definitely required for a sealed environment like true tissue cultures but not as important here. Thoughts?
