How to Propagate Hoya Plants

In this video I’m sharing with you one of my favorite ways to propagate Hoya plants. I’ll be propagating several Hoyas including a very splashy Mathilde, a Super Silver Krohniana, a Hoya Sunrise and more. By the end of this video you too will know how to be a Hoya propagating expert.
My favorite root growing medium for plants I plan to sell or trade is sphagnum moss. Just cut and plant and then set in a bright, warm and humid location…..then watch them grow into gorgeous new plants!
Thanks so much for watching! Don’t forget to Like and Subscribe for more fun plant content.

    I’ve rooted Hoya cuttings directly into Pon. Keep the Pon moist with a saucer of water and using a root growth like canna Rhizotonic to feed and encourage growth, once growth appears ease off on the amount of water. I’ve also grown from seed in pon, it’s an excellent substrate.

    Hi, Linda! I’ve read about others rooting right in Pon. Maybe at some point I’ll give it a try! Glad to hear you’ve had great results with it….I really appreciate the tips and will fall back on them when I try it out….thanks!!!! 😊.

    Hi Tina! That’s a bummer about the Super Silver! I’ll be babying these cuttings for the next few months so if you’re still in the market for one then, I’ll have a nice one for you 😊. They are soooo gorgeous! I’m really looking forward to seeing the super splash Mathilde progression as well. Hope you have a delightful Sunday. Luv ya 🥰.

    Thank you so much for doing this Gena! I have a few questions. Number one does new growth grow off that vine where you cut? Number two if you propagate it in water like the one in the pink vase, will it grow as fast also? And number three who bought that Hoya Rebecca before I could😂🤣😂

  • @ThePinkTrellis

    Hi, Kathy! So any new growth would come out from that node right near the cut. The little bit of stem left where we cut will not grow anymore. I think water grows roots faster than sphagnum moss but I’ve never really checked to see if that is the case. The sphagnum moss does such a great job of it so I think if there’s any difference, it isn’t that much. But I’m guessing straight water will yield faster results. Hahaha….I didn’t even know it sold till you said something! I may have another I can list 😊. I’ll let you know if I do! Thanks for watching and happy Sunday to you 💚.

    Do these little cutting now go to a prop box? Or sill? What humidity level are they living/growing in?

  • @ThePinkTrellis

    @ThePinkTrellis

    Hi, Heather! I put them in a prop box since I don’t have very high humidity in my house. I would say they will sit in 60% humidity. That definitely helps them to grow faster. And for lighting they are under grow lights.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Very informative. I do have a question for you though. I have heard that the pedoncules are kinda pretty fragile and can be damaged it you bang the up, even a little. Dropping the pedoncules on the table like that isn't risking to damage it or even kill it?

  • @ThePinkTrellis

    @ThePinkTrellis

    Hi, Vicky! I haven’t actually heard that. You can knock the flowers off if handled roughly but that peduncle will bloom over and over again. I think the only way to stop it is to cut off the peduncle. Thanks for watching 😊.

    How do you keep the leaves that touch the moss from rotting?

  • @ThePinkTrellis

    @ThePinkTrellis

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! I’ve never had that issue. The leaves touch the moss and are completely fine. Have you had the experience of them rotting when touching the moss?

  • @claritzareyes4990

    How often do you wer the moss? And also, how do you keep it from staying moss longer? Do you put it in a cabinet or in a sip lock bag to keep the moister?

  • @ThePinkTrellis

    @ThePinkTrellis

    7 ай бұрын

    Hi! When using moss, I always then put the propagation in a moist/high humidity environment. The moss will then continually stay moist and you only need to water like once a month, or until you feel the moss is dry to the touch. If you don't have a cabinet, grow tent, or some sort of humidity dome, you can always use a ziplock bag. Keeping it warm is very helpful as well. And of course, provide the appropriate amount of light needed for that particular plant. Plants will root very fast in moss from my experience.

    Ok. I'll try that. I just got a hoya Heuschkeliana cutting currently in perlite , but I'm afraid of rotting the stem in the process. I'll put it in moss and test it out that way. Thank you so much.

    Hi, Karen! Thanks for watching...I'm so glad you found it helpful. Propagating is so fun and rewarding when you can make a beautiful new plant from a single cutting with as little as one leaf. It's just the best! Thanks again :).
