‼‼‼‼‼‼‼Thank you so much for your effort, but I really don't understand why everyone keep telling me what the greeting "olá malta" means. ⁉ In the video I said that the origin, the root of the word "malta" is unclear to me as it's the same word as the European country Malta, thus I made a joke about it. Does it even make sense to use an expression in the video that I don't understand and be like- Ooops, what did I say, can someone tell me what this means?! I just don't get it.

😂😂😂 yeah, I know it's a group of people, but the question was so funny and onces he asked it, I was so interested to find the origin of the word "malta", but as I said, I couldnºt trace it... Thanks, José! The summer's over here in Belgrade, unfortunately, I hope you're still enjoying it!

If it helps, the word "malta" refers to a group of people. You use it with people you know that (and this will sound medieval) are of equal condition. So greeting your friends with "olá, malta" is fun and slightly old-fashioned, but greeting a gathering of your teachers the same way would be... odd. (Please don't tell them the truth, which is: Portugal spent centuries trying to be friends with Malta and they kept snubbing us, although we keep greeting them to this day.)

No, they can't... :) I mean, can't give such a general answer, but there are words that end in "-ia" that we never pronounce with an /j/ or /y/ if it's easier to understand that sound. for example- democracia is pronounced: /dəmukrɐsiɐ/, it's in the stressed syllable.

@@portuguesewithmaria Thanks for the answer! So the "i" in "ia" at the end of a word is stressed as long as there isn't another stress mark before it? For example "Ucrânia". Without the "â" the "i" would be stressed like in "democracia", right?

isso é uma guerra eterna... Para os falantes de espanhol é mais fácil quando se fala só em português, mas para os outros, é mais conveniente ouvirem a explicação em inglês... Por isso tenho de usar os dois. :)

A malta espanhol fiz isto um bocado mais fácil porque eles ponham o acento gráfico na sílaba acentuada ;-)

Maria, Does English words like 'International' when translated to Portuguese use "çion" I mean the siddle in 'ç' , so the word turns out to be ' internaçional' I have read on internet please help me if and guide me If I am wrong.
