I quit my job the day of after being told i made a bad decision to visit family even though my boss told me it was my decision. He didn't have any decency to tell me i could or couldn't go. When i told him about my trip he went off on me and didn't give an opportunity to discuss. i thought things through for about 2 hours and realized that behavior, along with shit pay and zero benefits and months of poor treatment from the boss, that this was not okay. I've since gotten a new job with much better pay and full benefits. Don't let an employer take advantage of you or feel bad. No money is worth it. Respect yourself.

I feel you. My supervisors were so vague with their upcoming decisions. I would constantly ask them for every month on important decisions on the schedule of an upcoming event . They would get annoyed with me and wait later and later to tell me important details. I’m deciding to quit cause my supervisors and boss purposely leave me in the dark while they make life altering decisions for my life. I can’t anymore. I asked 1 day to go with my family and they tell me their actual plans at the last minute when they could have prepared MONTHS ago. I decided to make resignation letter now but I already know the shit storm of drama coming my way from my boss and supervisor. I know they are gonna put the blame on me for their poor planning ahead skills.

Not everyone leaves a job for more money. I work as a part time nanny, tutor and babysitter. I got a part time job at a grocery store to help fill in my schedule while I was building up my connections. (I moved to where my now husband already lived) I told them from the jump I was looking for 15 to 25 hours a week. The lady in the department kept scheduling me for 25 to 35 hours. I put in my 2 weeks. She told me I could do just 2 days a week. After a while, she was pressuring me/scheduling me for more hours. I finally just put in my 2 weeks. I lasted over 6 months. I had been turning away a lot of childcare jobs due to my schedule there. I've been working every day since I left there a week ago.

Damn, She is good! I needed that little pep talk! I feel almost guilty for giving my 2 weeks notice or for a lot of things I do in life, probably due to how I was raised and put down alot of the time by a family member, so those feelings come back when doing things like this to better myself. I probably wouldn't feel so bad if we weren't so short staffed, but like she pointed out, it's not out problem and it's just a job. I just get so attached to the people that I worked with, it's just hard to walk away and leave them with even more they have to do, besides having them do my job too. Sometimes I hate that I wear my heart on my sleeve and feel so bad when I can't try to help others even when they are my coworkers (friends from work) but I know it's time to walk away and leave this place behind. Especially when something better comes along and so many others higher up in the company have given there notice too.

i was about to give in my 2 weeks notice at work last week, as i strongly disliked working under my boss, however the day before i was planning on doing this, the Regional Manager (my bosses boss) group called the team i worked in and told me that my boss was just let go and was no longer part of the Company. No reason given, just gone. To say i felt relieved is an understatement. Nothing worse than working under a boss who bosses, rather than a leader who leads.

I’ve seen an employment lawyer on here say to avoid exit interviews because HR just uses them to put in your file to protect themselves against future lawsuits you might bring. They skew it as you’re just a disgruntled employee. And my place took an exit interview SHREDDING our manager (rightfully so) and they just handed it over to the manager in full. It called out other employees that could corroborate the statements and agreed with the ex -employee. They just gave that to the toxic manager. WHO READ IT WORD FOR WORD TO THE EMPLOYEES MENTIONED IN THE INTERVIEW AS CORROBORATING THAT INTERVIEW. Sooooooooo toxic and grossly inappropriate.

@@pbj0815 thank you! I blanked on his name when I was posting. I really appreciate his content. I politely declined the request (multiple requests actually) from HR for an exit interview. I told them that they are already well aware of the issues the company has and they’ve had no interest so far in fixing them so I didn’t feel that my exit interview would change anything and I flat out told them I didn’t trust them to keep things appropriately anonymous and that my remaining coworkers would then face retaliation so no go from me. A couple weeks later I was proved right when HR handed over the next person to quit’s exit interview to the manager who read it out loud to the people he named in it as being witness to the issues he was reporting.

@@queenbey6678 Great advice! Right after I left one of my coworkers was upset at how it went down and asked to meet with our manager. They asked to record the conversation and it went BADLY. Head of HR was called in immediately and it turned into a dogpile on the employee who then quit abruptly a few days later too. I felt bad but they should have checked first. Michigan is an interesting state. It’s sort of one party consent but sort of not. It’s technically one participant state. Meaning you can’t record a conversation you’re not part of even if one of those parties gives consent unless all involved parties consent. But you can record a conversation you’re part of without disclosure because as a participant you have consented to the recording. Wish he knew that going in. Not that it would have made a difference. On the day I quit he texted me that he was already being gunned for by the manager because she didn’t like that he stood up for himself and she probably wanted him gone.

The "work world" is much smaller than you might think. Just like you might know many people that work at other companies, so does your boss. You want to make unprofessional comments to the "boss from Hell" on your way out? Cool, don't be surprised if he gives your new boss a call to warn him about how horrible you are or even give his best effort to damage your reputation before you even start your new job. I have seen people try to kill someone's new job offer because they are so upset that someone is leaving them. That is why it is so important you keep it professional on the way out of your old job, don't vent to your old boss on the way out, don't make any comments on social media, and keep the ranting to a minimum as you exit. I'd recommend you not tell your boss or coworkers where you are going; just politely don't offer that piece of information. After you have left your old job and have settled in to your new role, then reach out to your old coworkers and post on social media if you want them to know the details.

They just couldn't make the change to my pay for me to work closer to home with a pay bump and less up front customer service. After 40 your body is just like, you can't run around all the time after people to clean up. And I hit that hall plus coworkers crossing my day off boundaries. I may have started it checking in on a newbie while away, but when I got calls about stuff was clearned training from people I was like we will talk about how inappropriate this when I am back in 2 days as I am not the manager on duty (didn't have the management title but had to be one)

Most companies, once you put in your resignation you're basically dead to them. They can also lay you off at any time and not blink an eye. Ive never felt bad (and in some cases not even givin notice) when leaving for a better opportunity. They wouldn't think twice about getting rid of you - if times were tough or you weren't making them a fortune. No point in showing any sort of compassion that won't ever be returned.

If they truly are trusted friends, they will understand that you're sparing them from having to lie when someone asks them "So do you know where is going?" They can't hide what they don't know. Get settled and established for 6 weeks (minimum!) in the new gig, THEN update your LinkedIn and reach back out to your former colleagues.

Great advice Erin! I'm curious what your take is on what I call the "reference dilemma". I was once in a situation where a prospective employer requested 2 managerial references and since I had been at the current company for so long it was a bit tricky since 1. I didn't want to ask my current manager to be a reference for a position that I had yet to be formally offered and 2. I haven't been in touch with a previous manager in several years. It was suggested to me to ask the future employer to only contact the reference if they fully intend to make me an offer so as to not fully jeopardize my current job.

Hi Erin! I am a manager at a mid-size company and I am switching jobs because my current workload is unmanageable and it's leading to health problems (tons of stress and anxiety). I do the job of approximately 3 people and the culture is also very "rules for thee but not for me," and well, toxic. Although I love a lot of the people that I work with, I want a job that will allow me to get control of my life and my health (flexible), that is remote, has a specific list of tasks - like a data analyst position, copywriter- , etc, where I can feel I am providing value and not always rushing to just get things done. I want a culture that values me and my contributions and not by how fast I reply to emails or how late I stay "hustling." I have a decade of experience, so in my situation, how would you address the question - why do you want to change jobs? in an interview, thanks!

That's why you save up enough money for two or three months' expenses, give your notice, and start putting in applications a few weeks before your time is done. If everything lines up, you can start your new job right away. If you haven't found something by the time your old job ends, then at least you have bought yourself some time to keep looking.

When she said "evergreen" letters of recommendation, I believe she meant evergreen as in "forever relevant" definition. An "evergreen letter of recommendation" is one that is still valid no matter how old it is, so I would guess some aspects are generic (like not specifying dates, and talking more about the person's qualities than their specific job).

6:15 Also, taking the counter-offer is a bit of a trap. It gives them more time to find your replacement to then drop you later... When you also don't have a new job lined up. They may offer a small bonus instead of a pay bump. This (like a signing bonus) is also a bit of a trap, as future raises are often based as a percent of your pay - without bonuses. A bonus in lieu of a pay raise puts you permanently on a "shallower path" in raises going forward.

F*** ending or starting a fuck professional employment relationship. All of this, too much, too much, time and effort is devoted to all this, considering how many times people change jobs in their life. Professional responsibilities from the recruiter are now shifted to the shoulders of the job seeker. This is insanity. Now it's not so important how professional you are in your field, but how well you pack manure, so that the employer has to spend as little time as possible evaluating your skills. F** this all.
