    Thank you, Dan. This was helpful. We moved to a continuous care retirement community in Virginia (USA) last year and I recently volunteered to do headshots for the admin heads. Trying to justify keeping my flash gear, I now do free headshots (really portraits) for fellow residents. Having done this and seeing how the residents like them, I’ve been considering starting a headshot business in the city where we live.

    There are some real gems of advice in this video. Allot (also) depends on location, socio-economics in a particular photographer's location, and competition. I believe I have split the difference in pricing models and use a one-hour session with up to three "selects" for $110. I shoot tethered and allow the client to pick his/her favorite three images. Since I am a fairly quick retoucher, this level has worked as a once balance of value vs. time.

    It's really good when you find a balance that works for you. I know exactly what you mean. It's taken me years to find a price point that still brings in the right number of clients to keep me busy but not work myself to death! :-)

    I have charged pr hour and pr image which is quite fair for portraits. For events I think packages probably is better because of the huge amount of images. Thank you for a great video 🙂👌🏻

    That's awesome Kristian. It's about finding a system that works for you. I should have mentioned in the video that for events and groups I also have a package system that I prepare specifically for each job depending on the complexity. I like your system of charging for the session per hour rather than fixed. 🙂

    Is it $50/hr for one person? What if 3 people from the same office show up at your studio and all three want to get photographed in the 1 hour? Is it still $50 or is it more? I'm really trying to work through what I am going to offer and how much I'll charge. I don't have a home studio but I rent a studio when needed. The issue is now a location shoot is cheaper than going to the studio. Thanks for any and all feedback. 🙏 Truly appreciated.

    I charge a flat fee for the session only which does not include any images. The images are charged separately. Just as I'm typing this, I'm thinking that I could do a video to go into more detail no the process of pricing and charging. Would you be interested in that type of video?

    @@DanCantero Absolutely! I'd watch it as soon as you put it out. For me, money where the business crashes into the art and I'm not very good at it, frankly. (In an ideal scenario) I'd love to have it done and gone before I take the first shot so my focus is on giving the client everything without money clouding the process.

    Love this content! I am a pretty experienced portrait photographer but really struggle getting clients through the door and at the moment feel like the proverbial starving artist, really looking forward to the marketing video, I had joined my local chamber of commerce but found there was a favored photographer who had been there for a while was getting all the work, so pretty much a waste of time, at least at this chamber, any tips would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the great info in this video series. Just to confirm, this pricing is for someone coming to your home studio, correct? How would you change this for a location shoot? Or if someone rented a studio? I imagine one of the benefits of the home studio is the flexibility in how much you can charge and still make money especially when starting out.

  • @DanCantero

    Hi, yes this is the pricing for someone coming to my studio. A location shoot adds another pricing component on top of this to cover for transporting everything to them but if they have more than one person they will often choose this option. Personally, I rather not go anywhere so sometimes I will give a small discount for groups if they can come to me.

    im confused as to why you would charge a client hourly and not per image? so if they have 1 hour that means they can get any amount of photos per hour?

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    Hi, it might not have come across properly in the video. I charge a fixed price for the session but it does not include any images. The images are sold separately. This ensures that even if they only buy 1 photo, it at least covers the cost but on average I sell around 6-7 images. Hope that makes sense.

    Hey Jon. I put my prices on my website so that I am totally transparent to any potential client. My current rate is $295 for my session and each edited image is $65. Compared to some other countries this is cheap but I've experimented with prices in my area and this seems to be the sweet spot for me in relation to number of jobs and profit. My average for session plus images is around $750. Headshots are part of my business for commercial photography so I tend to book them together over a few days and only book 2 sessions per day maximum. Works quite nicely around my other work. Dan
