One big word of caution. If you place a freeze on your accounts your insurance premiums may go up. I went through this before. I placed a freeze and then over a year saw my car insurance premiums slowly go up. It turns out that the insurance company was trying to get my credit score (in the background, or w/o notifying me) and failed; and then automatically increased my premiums.

This video is very informative… I came a victim of identity theft in 2021 up until now, and I I frozen my credit report and other things pertaining to my identity to protect myself took a lot of steps to protect my good name

You right if people freeze the their report... people minimize the SIM swapping and issuing credit. I did it and I don't have any intention to unfreez my report. Good job

Good advice Josh not just this one but many other videos as well. What’s the difference between lock the report vs freez? I locked all my 3 bureaus and will get declined if you forgot to unlocked, this happened to me when I submitted application refi my house and forgot to unlock and got declined. This is free that you can locked and unlocked at anytime from bureaus but you have to do all bureaus. That’s all I need. Again thanks for all advice from various topics.

Hey Josh will the bureaus still report credit scores, and those scores/reports show up at places like Credit Karma? Also, you might want to check at 3:35 a focus concealer that tracks for about 90 seconds at the center of the video.

I recently had an unauthorized charge on a credit card that never leaves my desk drawer. The investigation even showed it was ordered by me for someone else but delivered to my address. It was an online purchase but I didn't show up on my order history - it was on someone else's account. I have no idea how that could happen because I didn't order it and the item never showed up at my address and I went though hell trying to get it straightened out with my credit card company. So I totally intend to do this today or tomorrow. That freaked me out!! Thanks for great advice

Only when applying for new credit. Existing credit or companies that have already had permission to access your credit aren't affected. Great question!

It doesn’t affect your credit score directly, no. You still have a score, but it doesn’t do you much good because new credit is frozen (existing credit still runs, such as your credit card).

Are you aware of any issues with unfreezing credit? Any gotchas or potential delays? This concern is the main reason I haven’t done this yet.

I haven't had any problems yet, nor have I heard of any. It's in the bureau's best interest to unfreeze quickly (moreso than adding the freeze), and since the priorities align, there shouldn't be any "gotchas" in the process.

When freezing my account on Experian I got a pop-up in the right hand corner of my computer screen that said success and I said I did not get the option to print anything off… how do I get that pdf for Experian? Is there somewhere I can find it. Edit: The same thing happened with Trans Union I didn’t get any type of PDF to download just a page that says freeze outage thank you for your request of recess now in place. I hope I never need the pdf for these 2 sites to unfreeze.

Can you recommend any good credit monitoring agencies? I just don't want to go thru " unfreeze" action. Thanks

Unfreezing is very easy, but if you don’t want to, I recommend Identity Force.

I'm sure it's possible (I think legally they are required to allow it), but most experts seem to indicate that it's not necessary. Still, if you want to be extra careful, definitely add the lesser-known bureaus to the list.

Yes, but as fast as it was to freeze it, it's even faster to unfreeze it.

Ask the institution you're applying for credit with which one they use. They'll tell you. Or wait for the denial letter. It'll tell you which agency they used and give you a referral number to call and remove the freeze over the phone. Obviously takes a lot longer. Also, when you unfreeze an account, you can set a time window after which your account will automatically refreeze. So you can unfreeze it for a few days and just forget about it, it'll automatically relock.

Yea, great answer by Michael. You can also just unfreeze them all. It will only take 10 minutes to do that as well.

And if you are victim, how do you fix it

The most frustrating thing about this, is that you need to spend a lot of time on the phone. Most of the customer service people speak VERY little English.

Sorry to hear that, Julien! This is definitely a good thing to do, and I'm not saying you still need to pay for a monitoring service, but there is still value in making sure that either you or someone else is monitoring your data. It can be used for more purposes than just opening a credit card account.
