I went to a new doctor and filled out the required information forms and was naive enough to put my SS number down on the form because it was requested. The next day I received a call from a phone company store verifying that I was the person requesting to purchase a new phone and she read my SS number back to me! It was local and I knew the only place I had given out my SS number was the doctor's office, ended up filing a police report. Now on any doctor's form, I leave the SS number off.

Freezing your credit is a great option. My husband and I froze our credit years ago, and we "unfreeze" whenever we know a credit check is coming (like when we moved to a new rental place). And set it to automatically re-freeze our credit after a set amount of time (i.e. one month)

Sadly, only about 20% of credit applications actually run a credit check like they should so you can have fraudulent credit lines taken out even with it frozen. Still better than nothing for sure and better for preventing big purchases.

Instead of changing passwords every 90 days, use a password manager to create unique and challenging password for each account. Never use the same password on multiple accounts.

Im going through a situation now due to id theft...this, even though I was paying Experian to protect my identity. Their big failure created quite the mess that some jackasses still try to use to accuse me, the victim. As far as I am concerned, I notified the authorities...after that, its on them. Im not accepting any responsibility for the actions of pretenders or lenders using stolen id...its on them. All the best in your battle. Lock credit file and have id protection...its better than nothing.

While I understand that the ramsey team doesn't like credit cards I don't understand why they never talk about theft. Credit cards are safer if that info gets stolen. You can almost guarantee that you won't be on the hook for that money. It could be way worse if someone got your debit info. I'd rather have money that isnt mine stolen than personal money from my bank account. A regular debit just doesn't offer the same protections like credit cards.

Hey George, some of your information is outdated based on the latest federal guidance -- specifically, the part about changing your password every 90 days. Research has found that it is better to not use this policy because people tend to 1) Choose easy to guess passwords 2) default to an easy to guess naming convention [i.e. password1, password2, etc.] and 3) Write down passwords. The new federal guidance is to employ MFA wherever possible and use a "passcode" that is long and complex but never changes. I would refer people to the CISA Secure Your World security awareness mission. They have some security guidance for various ages and would be up-to-date with the latest standards.

All this talk about robbing cash (in other videos elsewhere). Mr. Kamel just said it affects about 40 million people just in the U.S.A last year on identity stuff which a lot is digital. Another reason to have a bit of cash on hand as that cannot happen to you from around the world like the digital stuff can anywhere from an internet connection while you make it though if a bank account(s) are involved. Didn't you just say in another video elsewhere on this channel that you did not have a printer? "Thanks Dave" for using the work one.
