I guess I would do a few things different, but thanks for taking the time to do this video. Where I live building code does not allow for electric boxes behind a tub or shower wall. I've never seen thinset or anything under the first mud layer. Using wood for the step is really asking for trouble, any little leak will rot it out and cause a failure. Many many folks have had to redo shower bases because of using wood. And if you ever have a problem with the shower valve, your going to have to destroy the wall to access it. I always lay out showers and tubs so an access door or panel can be on the backside for repairs. But hey you seem like a good guy with great intentions! Hope it all works for many years.

A simpler way would be to lay the pan liner down, use dry pack for the preslope(which is porous so it will weep/drain), then waterproof it with either a adhesive membrane or a roll on membranr. Did twice the work for the same reault. But thats the game, i guess.

Thanks for watching. I don’t know a lot about it floating walls as it’s not something I’ve had to deal with. First thing to find out is how much of a gap is required per code for your floating wall? Next, is how big is you shower? The hope would be that you can double up your footer for your walls and still meet code for your floating wall.

    1. You NEVER use mastic around water. Actual thinset mortar should be used to create your skim coat underneath the deck mud. 2. You need to chemically weld the seam you created when you cut the shower pan liner to wrap around the curb. 3. You should use deck mud for pan work. 4. You need to create screed points around the entire parameter of the pan and use them to create the correct slope for both floats. 5. You need pebbles in place on weep holes during both floats. 6. You failed to put a bead of silicone caulk around the drain under the shower pan membrane. 7. When using wood for the curb it needs to be pressure treated for a couple reasons. First, wood absorbs moisture even if there's a barrier, pressure treated wont adsorb as much. Second, pressure treated lumber doesn't expand and contract as much as non pressure treated wood. Build the curb out of concrete or use a prefabricated curb. You can even use bricks as a safe alternative. 8. You need shower pan corner dams. 9. You need to do a 24 hour water test. This is a fundamentally flawed installation that will fail.

Not 100% sure on the construction paper, some People use it and some put down Duraroc. I’d try for 1/4” preslope at the drain, then go up 1/4 inch per foot. So if your drain is in the center of your shower it would be 3’ , so 3/4” of preslope, so at your walls it would be 1” and drain would be 1/4.

You CAN put the liner on the floor, better if glued, and this was how it was done with lead liners. But pre slope under the liner prevents standing water, and delays deterioration. Further, a careful removal can result in reusing the pre slope.

  • @chrisbuildsitall

Sand/topping is used to make a “dry pack”, you use that layer to set your slope and drain height, then after the liner you’ve got to put down a layer that the tile attaches too, which is just a high quality mortar mix.

  • @chrisbuildsitall

Your only issue would be if water got under your liner then it would just sit on a flat surface and create problems. That’s why you want a slope under the liner, if anything gets under the liner it still gets directed to the drain. Not to say many people do build them that way!
