How to Practice Baritone Ukulele for Beginners // Easy Tutorial
Музыка
Today I'm talking about how to practice baritone ukulele (for beginners)! This easy ukulele tutorial will cover my ground rules for practice, I'll teach you several exercises you can work on, and then I'll walk you through a short sample practice routine with a metronome.
DON'T FORGET you can adjust the video's playback speed! You can speed up or slow down playback according to your needs by clicking the gear icon on this video.
I'll be demonstrating on baritone ukulele for this video, but the beginning applies to people who sing, people who play piano, people who play guitar, etc! Anyone can benefit from these principles.

I watch these for the instructions, but mainly for Abigail's shining kindness!
As an adult beginner Bari uke afficianado, your videos are clear, precise, without hype and up there with the best on KZread. Thank you so much for your time in helping other music lovers get the most out of their musical journey. BTW, I watched some of your jazz standard covers and have to say what a beautiful voice you have (so jealous coz when I sing it's like a goose farting in the fog).
The 'pep talk' at the beginning was brilliant and could be applied to many things in life. As someone once told me and I've never forgotten this "how would you eat an elephant? Answer: in small pieces!"
Really enjoyed this…starting a bit later in life at 50…I got my first bariuke a week ago and I love it so much….hoping to learn via fine people like yourself on KZread who take the time to teach us beginner’s. Thank-you so much~~~take care~~~ Christy from Washington State ❤️
Thanks, a good start for slow guy like me April 25, 2024 10 through 1030 am
Hi Abigail, like others I’m new to the Uke. I may have made a rookie mistake and bought a Baritone because I like the sound I didn’t realize its quite different to Tenors and Concerts. However now that I’ve found YOU I’m actually ok with it as you make it simple and enjoyable. So……thanks heaps!
As someone who is just starting to learn, (just bought my uke two days ago), your video was a refreshing surprise. Especially for someone trying to learn music later in life. Thank you. I will definitely keep watching your lessons.

Easter Sunday '22 this tutorial rounded off all the practice I have put into practicing chords etc. on my ukuleles, be it my soprano, concert, tenor and or baritone. Thank you so very much. This was loads of fun and very rewarding. Greetings from the sunny climes of Basle, Switzerland
Just got my first baritone. A spruce Lanikai. Love it! And now I find you! 💕🎵💕

@@AbigailFlowersMusic Thank you. I started playing a Tenor last Christmas at the age of 67. First instrument. So I could teach my two young granddaughters.. Ages 2 and 5. Taught myself using KZread lessons from such nice folks like yourself. I saw a review on the Spruce Lanikai from Bernadette P snd fell in love. My Kala is getting jealous. Looking forward to switching mental gears .. The rich, deep sound of the Lanikai is hard to resist. Thanks again for your work!
Thank you so much for sharing the beginners level on Baritone ukulele. I can't wait to get mine and practice, thanks for your positive vibes and encouraging us to be kind to yourself, in order to get better in playing an instrument.
I have my baritone uke for less than two weeks. And I started music after 65 yoa after saying that I was born with two left ears all my life. Really liked your teaching style. Even the metronome. When you set it at 90, out was the direction I decided to freak. But by stressing that it was counting double time, it was like time slowed down. Very enjoyable. BTW I'm trying to learn the rule of the octave on both the baritone and the tenor. And I will use the parts to work on my voice. When my neighbors aren't home.
this has been the only video that has helped me! thank you so much

Aww you are so welcome!! Please let me know if you have questions or I can be helpful in any way!
You are an amazing teacher and I can see you learn a lot along the way of your own journey. You must had a good teacher or self taught. The way you encourage people is very encouraging. I love your video. I was wondering if you do any private lessons? I have that ukulele but I think I m better learn with people alongside with me.
Music is the soul!
Abigail I love you...yes I can relate to you....thank you. I just found this video. You make so much since to me.
thanks abigail
What a great video! I would love to learn all the scales!

That’s so wonderful to hear!! I’ve become a “you can do anything you set your mind to” person but... I really don’t think I was meant to play guitar 😂😂 baritone uke has been such a wonderful alternative to me, although I am so grateful I got to take some guitar lessons in another life. I hope you have so much fun with your uke!!
Great video with important and practical reminders! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!
Excellent help, thank you
Great teacher!! Thank You!!
This was an awesome video. I felt like you were talking to me the whole time. So much of it was the thigs you are trying to teach me. Thank you
Thank you Abigail! I just found you yesterday and I am already learning! Excellent video, I like the structure and how you organize your lessons! 😀
Very helpful for sure. Lots of different things to practice here. Scales and saying the notes is something I have never done. Really going to have to work on that. I really want to learn those notes.
The best suggestions ...I am a beginner I really appreciated your presentation 😊
beginner gramma here : ) but i love lots of songs and want to sing and play them ~ so happy to find you ~ i think you are going to help me get there ~ thank you so much!! i love all your helpful tips, very important ~ will look for you as i continue ~ yay!
Very helpful. I tuned my tenor ukulele to Baritone tuning and have to learn chords. I enjoyed your video.
Hello, thanks so much for your introduction to positive practicing. I already play soprano and tenor uke. But now I'm in a whole new ballpark with the tuning of my baritone uke that I just got at the Gaithersburg Uke Fest. So much to learn. I look forward to your next lesson!
Just got a baritone ukulele for my birthday. Courtesy of daughter and son-in-law. I'm older and an absolute beginner. They did get me lessons and I had my first one. I found your lessons and must say that this lesson is fantastic. Easy to follow and understand. Your perspective on learning and practice are great. Too long and you get sidetracked. ( Look, a squirrel)....LOL Thank you and I look forward to continue my learning with you.........Hal

Nice job
So I bought the uke i'd been renting and came back to your practise video to get inspired again. How do I learn more scales, chord progressions and songs. I'm keen to keep learning. Thanks for your help in getting going on the baritone uke.
I really like this video and it's helping me a lot. I've been practicing for a few weeks, and the video seems rudimentary at first, but I totally agree that it's good to "wax-on wax-off" in a Karate Kid reference. I can already see improvement after watching this video one time. I will surely watch it again.
Great!
Very good
I got a baritone uke for Christmas and I feel like i'm going to be able to play it because of your video. Your video is very well organized and I like your rules for practice, especially rule #1. I don't know why it's easy for me to forget that it's about having fun. Thank you.

Hi Abigail, greetings from Dorset England, very helpful videos you make! Do you ever play Tenor guitar? Tuning DGBE so the baritone uke tranfers over. Thanks again...👍
I'm an old gezzer who has never played anything. I'm hoping I can tackle the Baritone Uke. I assume you are using a DGBE tuning, because that is what my Uke will be when it arrives in the mail in a couple of weeks. I will subscribe so I am ready when it comes in the mail.
Very instructive video, clearly presented. Just the sound advice I needed to improve my playing. The only other thing that I have found helpful, is to practice a song with easy chords. I'm using Blowin' In The Wind - G C D Em. But I'll now be doing this after I practice the basics. Thanks

Yes! I think practicing a song (as opposed to disembodied chords) is the best way to build confidence/a love for practice. Great advice!
Excellent video I just bought a baritone about three weeks ago and this is the best video I’ve seen about exactly how to do a practice my next question is what scale do you recommend after D. Because the C scale has that barre chord etc.

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found it helpful. I have a video going over the scale patterns for baritone that might be helpful! I would recommend looking at the G scale next, as baritone ukes are sort of naturally tuned to do well in the key of G! kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYlomriLaNTfmpc.html

Abigail I am so glad to find you. I have played uke baritone for 5 years. As I play more and more I am wearing my pointer finger nail down so I have to use a pick. I don’t play as well or enjoy a pick. Is there anything you can use to strengthen that nail.?
@hni7458
2 ай бұрын
You haven't got reply, Sandra, so I might help you. I'm a classical guitarist who just started uking. Fingernails are a true worry with the guitar and many players go to nail salons. I've warned ppl in the past in forums, but I've changed my mind here. I've found a very good lady who treat my nails and I've never had better tone. I'm using a pick with the uke because I like it, so in contrast to you nails are not a worry here. So I suggest you test gel treatment on your index finger - if you use nail polish you just put that on top, nothing to it, and it will hold for a month. Doesn't cost much either. Nor will you ever break such a nail. Good luck!
Hello greetings, I apologize for the inconvenience. How could I tune my Harmony vintage RB 3525 14 fret baritone ukulele to sound like soprano. I appreciate your kindness
I just bought a baritone ukelele, I love the sound and it reminds me of my classical guitar. However, I am having an awful time getting it positioned.

Hah! You’re absolutely right!
My teacher wants me to rember the whole 54 notes about . Not happy with him .ben studying about 3 years mostly with a teacher. Can read music not well yet..apparently some sheet music is complex. Sheet music does not give all inf.i spend hours every day .no tv no socializing . It not boring.
If you can't read a music book? It's natural for someone who can play bye ear? I grown up in a family members who all played bye ear and no reading a music.
The Metronome. Is your choice of BPM completely arbitrary? For instance, you used 90 and 60. Why? I feel like I am missing the secret. :o)
@AbigailFlowersMusic
4 жыл бұрын
Somewhat arbitrary! I like round numbers haha but I definitely try to choose a tempo that is uncomfortably slow to begin with, then play the exercise until I get it right 3 times or so, then I can speed up 5 bpm at a time! It’s often harder to play slowly than to speed up, so I think both ends of the spectrum make great practice.

I just bought one. I'm assuming it's kind like guitar. To my ears it sounds more like a guitar than like a ukulele.

I agree! That's part of what I love about baritone is the guitar-like sound. It's tuned just like the first 4 strings of a guitar, so a lot of the chord shapes translate, as well. Congrats on the new instrument!
