In this easy tutorial, I'll show you how to play jazz chords for baritone ukulele. Almost all of these chords can be played without barring! We'll start with basic chords and then look at some exciting variations.

I'll start by showing you some basic chords--come back to this video as often as you like to learn and practice along! Then we'll look at some "upgraded" chords--variations on the basic chords that can add some fun colors to your playing. At the end, we'll learn a basic chord progression and a jazzy chord progression. Both of these progressions are great tools to use as you practice getting these chord shapes into your hands.

Traditional floor stands often have trouble fitting a baritone, while this one fits any size instrument.

These are what I use because they were what the local shop had in! I’m not a string nerd, but I definitely like these!

This is the case I use. While I ADORE the more vintage-looking, hard cases, I’ve found that they just don’t have the same storage as this one. I use the pocket and inside compartment to carry cables, tuners, extra strings, batteries etc.

Now, if you don’t need the pocket, is there anything in the world more handsome than this case?! I don’t own one myself but if I needed a case for the aesthetic over the storage, I would buy this one.

Again, I do not own this, but fiberglass cases are great for if you need to fly with your instrument. Plan A should always be to keep your instrument with you, but if you are absolutely unable, this is the type of case many musicians use.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used this amp. It’s perfect for solo performances where I’m playing and singing. I’ve only ever had 1 gig where it wasn’t sufficient, and that was outdoors and there was a waterfall between me and the audience. This is an incredible investment for solo performers, but I’ve also used it in many a small group setting.

This is the stand I use, and to be completely honest there are things that annoy me about it. But here’s what’s priceless: the easy grip extender thing--I just squeeze and it moves freely. ALSO I will never go back to using a stand that doesn’t have the little metal clips to keep your music in place. Whether you’re playing outdoors or playing indoors with a strong fan, you’re going to regret buying a stand that doesn’t have the metal clips at some point!

I don’t own this stand, but if you’re looking for a cheaper option, this may be a good place to start! With music stands, you always have to be careful about the weight you put on them. Try not to put large, heavy books on if possible.

The F chord Alt is my fave. I have dexterity issues and that middle finger bar acros the e & b are a real struggle. I'll keep practicing it of course but its great to have an option. Great tips TYTY!! 😊

Favorite chord is the Fadd2, (I also use it in another thing I am learning from a ukulele video by Marco Crillo) I also love the Am7 shape because that shape is so versatile and it is part of your jazz progression video that starts with the C6 (i think - A barre across all 4 strings on the 5th fret) I really like the last progression at the end. It really is jazzy and easy to play. This was excellent information and fun. Now maybe build off these chord with a song to play along with....... I also have a separate question that I would like to ask, so I'm gonna email you.

I like all/most 7ths chords. Some of the so called "jazz" chords just sound wrong on their own but put in a progression, I think sound sense - I think!!

Context is definitely key!! I just taught a lesson to a teenager and we were doing jazz progressions and it’s so interesting to hear what chord qualities others prefer-it’s totally personal and very much impacted by context. Thank you so much for watching!

Hi! Thank you so much for watching. Full disclosure: I am sponsored by Lanikai, so I’m definitely biased, BUT I did play their instruments before I got connected! I think of Lanikais as perfect for performance and/or studio. I think most beginners would do well with something in a lower price range (if they’re trying to save money) but Lanikais are just a nice step up if you’re wanting to treat yourself or play publicly! So yes, I’m a big fan of Lanikai ukes, but I also know the price might not be right for everyone!

Wow! That"s a whole lot of cords for a Beginner. I am really over loaded trying to learn a little bit at a time. I love my baritone but this was way over load for me this time. And really does a beginner need that many cords to play a few songs. I am committed but not that much. Just letting you know.

Totally understandable! This tutorial isn't specifically for beginners, it's just meant to be approachable for folks who aren't able to do barre chords but want to build their harmonic vocabulary. Good for you for focusing on consistency rather than trying to learn everything at once.
