Agreed. Top notch lessons, no nonsense. I appreciate that he plays it at the beginning.
I just did a little tour of all the “how to play The Boxer” videos. This guy is superb. Who else would figure out that iconic intro for us? Nobody. Plus stories about the original musicians. Best. The best. Definitely the best. Most definitely the best.
Hello all. Please consider supporting Andy with a donation. You will never get quality lessons in such detail as you get from this channel. Think about it. We cannot afford to lose Andy's talents. Thank you all.
Not only a GREAT teacher , but a Damn good Guitarist . .
Masterly as usual. RIP Hal Blaine, the drummer on the track, who passed this week. He was one of the greatest session drummers of all time.
Amazing demeanor... agree... best guitar teacher on you tube hands down...he talks to you like a friend.. the best
Fabulous lesson. Such an iconic song and one that all acoustic guitarists want to know and play. This was the very first song I learned on guitar back when I was 15 years old in the mid 70's. I had a Paul Smon songbook with just the chord diagrams, and hours and hours of practice alone in my bedroom. I learned the chords and strummed away, and then I tried the fingerpicking, doing exactly as suggested here in this video ; thumb and then one finger then introducing the second finger. It didn't all go smoothly at first but I kept on and after a couple of days, suddenly to my amazement I was doing it without thinking. I too had been blown away by watching and listening to someone else fingerpicking, and now I was doing it too! So I can confirm to anyone watching who wants to learn to play, you can do it! It may take practice, but a little bit everyday will certainly reap rewards. Just enjoy your playing and have fun, and with lessons like this, it won't be too long before you're playing like a pro.
that intro is amazing. i never would of worked it out in a million years. thanks a bunch
After looking at a thousand channels and still not getting it you helped me get it. I can play the first two notes which couldn’t before! Thank you you’re a great instructor I can’t wait to watch this video on loop so I can learn the whole song!
I've been playing The Boxer since the day it was released and still love it. Never had a clue how to play the intro and never thought it was possible. Until today ! Thank you. !!
Brilliant. Just brilliant. Fast enough for experienced players just looking for some pointers, and slow enough for those needing it spelled out. SO great to see accuracy in these posts. Can't wait 'til I get some dough so I can donate to this worthy effort. Seriously. Thank you for your excellence.
So blessed that this guy is on youtube giving me quality lessons for free!!

Watched many of these videos over the last couple of years. They're so well presented that they make these classics accessible to many of us and a bit of the history thrown in to boot. Thank you so much.
This is one of the best songs ever. I remember using my old mans headphones when he was gone and playing this over and over. I must have been around 10 or so. Thanks so much for this one. I WILL get the travis picking down. I just need more practice. A bunch more.

Such attention to detail, and taking the time to slow it down so us lesser players can see, hear, and understand. It gives us a chance to actually learn it. I have watched so many instructional videos where, yah, I can see the chords, I can hear the playing, but give up because I just can't get to replicate it. Your videos are so complete. I will have to go to donate to your channel!

Well said. My thoughts EXACTLY.
Hi Andy. It is a very very very big present for all of us. This is for me a masterpiece. I can hear this song 100 thousand times and still be touched by the tune and sensitivity of the lyrics. Paul Simon is my favorite song writer. I will catch my guitar now and try to play as you do. Cheers. Mathieu (from France).
THIS GUY IS THE MOST ACCURATE AND VERY DETAILED GUITAR TUTOR IN KZread! THUMBS UP! THANK YOU.❤
One of the greatest albums in history. Thanks for the video. It was wonderful!
Your arrangements and explanations/demonstrations are so excellent, Andy!!! Thx for all you do for us.
That you for doing this! This is my favorite song of all time! Live your channel!
This lesson was EXACTLY what I hoped it would be. Well done and Thank you.
Thanks for showing the intro in standard! I’d been wanting to play that lick for ages and never quite got it.
These are the best lessons on KZread in my opinion. The guys that count off frets and strings for each note are too painfully slow.

some lessons are agony: put your third finger on the third fret on the bottom string..
Your lessons have always been incredible. You have a gift!!
What an awesome tutorial Tommy. Not only your performance was flawless and brilliant but your way of teaching and walking us through the song was also delightful. I am the director of a language school and in a sense, we also have to teach certain techniques that truly makes a difference. Thank you for your lesson and I will be following your great tutorials.
Thank you so much for this! I've been searching for the perfect lesson for this song and this is the one I actually understand and doesn't go too fast.
Great lesson, direction and guidance.. you are an amazing uplifting boost, to the guitar learning community..the effort and diligence to the details you obviously employ, is exactly what allows you to appear so effotless..always do appreciate your insight, and depth of interest you exude, in your learning as well as your teaching..
A Great teacher, great tunes, a pleasure to watch and learn from.
Your explanation of Travis picking was great. Your explanation of the song was easy to understand. Thanks!
Very nicely done especially with the split screen on the entro. Your demonstration followed by explanation and slow speed was perfect for capturing and showing how this song is out together. As some of your viewers explained I ha e played it wrong for a long time but usually around a camp fire with a beer I never heard complaints. Now I have some work to do. Thank you for a brilliant explanation and demonstration. One of th better tutorials on the tube.
I love this song and your guitar sounds amazing. Thanks so much for the Simon and Garfunkel tune, would love to hear more!
I think that it is awesome that you bring the Classics back to Life ! 😁
Yet another first class performance and tutorial. A Taylor never sounds better! Thank you.
Man that finger pickin is like a train. It's slow then picks up speed and feels natural! Thank you this is awesome.
I have been trying to get the travis picking style down for months, and finally it just clicked for me. I'm not sure what set it off, but it just makes sense now! THANK YOU!
I always wait for the weekend to learn a new song with your tutorials. Many thanks dude
Ahhh... The missing over-fill! Learn something new every day. Cool! Also: your recorded sound is spine-tingling lush! Thanks for the gift!
thanks for the lesson! i love finger picking, it’s such a cool feeling when you finally get it down! thanks again.
That guitar has the most awesome tone, just beautiful to listen to. Fantastic lesson and teacher.
Ha i'm #1 and on a fav song of mine, great intro on this track.....you rock! Thank You Your attention to detail is second to none, great ear too
You are the best guitar teacher, thank you very much for this tutorial.
Beautifully presented. Great lesson encompassing the nuance that makes this song so great. thanks
Like some others here, I too love this song and always wanted to play it well. All I had before was the chords and some crappy tabs. Now, with this excellent tutorial, I can give it my best. Thanks to you, bro. You da man!
You are the best teacher ever ...thanks so much and God bless you.
Thank you for helping me fall in love with guitar again. Please do one on Kathy’s Song or For Emily wherever I may find her!
what an excellent teacher, one step at a time. thanks and I will donate to your site.
An excellent lesson, thank you so much, I’ve wanted to play this for years and this has given me the inspiration. Cheers
Outstanding lesson! Always appreciate your song choices, the supplemental info on how it was actually played on the recording, and your attention to detail on the fingerpicking patterns. Your site is the best among all I've seen on KZread for learning and appreciating acoustic and electric guitar...bravo! I'm hoping someday we'll get your take on some classic Doobie Brothers acoustic masterpieces, like Slat Key Soquel Rag or others that require multiple guitars...as you recently did for those awesome 'Cars' songs. Great job!!!
Que MARAVILHA! A introdução, tipo harpa, com a afinação especial, é, de facto, do outro mundo. Este Tutorial é, Muito Bom, como sempre. Obrigado pela partilha. Um abraço desde a cidade do Porto, em Portugal.
This is the best tutorial on this song! And yes, that one lick DID screw me up....but how you broke it down....helped me get it pretty quickly. Thanks so much!
By far the best tutorial I of this song!
One of favorite songs of all time.
beautiful your lessons are exciting and your humility reflects on your courses a big thank to you Jp
You are a G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time!) 😎
A beautiful and very helpful lesson . Thank You so Much .
that taylor sounds impeccable. your playing does too. thank you!
I knew about one country riff, and it was a simple hammer-on one. Within 4 weeks of learning guitar properly, I can now play this kinda! Yay. Gotta say, you're a great teacher. Finger picking riffs NEED to be broken down in to sections like you're doing, but also with thumb separation it's perfect. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, please keep up the good work!
Great explanation! I have been fingerpicking for awhile but each song has its nuances, so let the work begin!! Thanks you very much.
you have no idea how long I have been searching for this type of tutorial on this song, especially the intro standard tuning as I play solo and don't have another guitarist to do alternate tunings, many thanks
Thank you. Love how you gave the heads up on which parts will screw you up haha. But then explained what to do. Thanks again!
I've been playing this for years. This is way better. Thank you.
There are no bounds to your talent! Thank you so much for going through this one in such detail.
Awesome tutorial man Thanks s million One of the best songs ever written👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇮🇪👍🏻
DEF best teacher on KZread bar none...THANK YOU for the invaluable lessons! BTW the inside picking pattern is much easier and sounds more natural imho...
I remember the exact "time?" and place when I suddenly found my thumb doing the bounce, I was running around showing all my pals. It was a great feeling. It still feels good 39 years later when I adapt it to new songs. I still need to catch up with these guy's, when I started there was no on-screen instruction or internet, it was listen, listen listen, picking out each note.

Man, when I think that the only way to learn when I was a kid was to listen to the record, try it on my guitar, listen to the record, try it on my guitar, and repeat 20x and hope I got it right. If the song was super important, I spent the few bucks on the sheet music - which had the 'official' chords, melody, and lyrics. If I later found out I was wrong in my copying of the song, it was usually because the guitarist on the record was playing in a different position. KZread is a lifesaver. I no longer spend hours trying to sound like the record. Usually, one guitarist has the song nailed. I copy him. It saves me tons of exploration. Hooray for technology! Now, if they could only write and play better songs I could listen to the radio again.
Yes. The best to-the-point lessons going.
U mean there are actually two guitars at the same time. Oh! that explained why I was scratching my head how to play the introduction for the last n years! Will try this out. Many thanks.
I've been playing this almost right, but not quite perfect for 10 years. Great tutorial.
Look no further. This is a wonderful accessible no-nonsense tutorial. Many thanks Mr. ShutupAndPlay!
You are a true technician of the guitar my friend.
Great I've been playing this wrong all this time. Please do "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" next.

Such a great lesson. Thank you SO MUCH!!
Absolutely STUNNING
Great tutorial and the sound/recording is really nice
tanks for your lesson, that was very clearly to me and i could to learn this very master piece
It's ok for the first guitar and the sense of picking ...... and thank you for your video (your G string is to be adjusted, right?) It shivers ......... In this title there are 3 guitars ..... the second ornamented and the third scratch simply to smooth everything. The mixing has a lot to do with it It's a Swiss army knife! And the result is incomparable with many other titles played on the guitar! This is the summit! simply GRANDIOSE!
Man, thanks so much for your tutorial....awesome job.
wow tat was really good. you made it look very easy on them hard parts. i never finished this song , but i will now, thank you
Finally heard you sing! you have a nice voice and should do it more often!
Amazing teacher. A true master.
Dang I knew it. I was working out El Paso one night and thought there was a connection between that intro and the intro for The Boxer. Just the style of the guitar playing caught me and I wondered if it was the same guy who played both intros. You confirmed my suspicions thanks..
Hi think I may TRY & play this properly after seeing your vid. Great attention to tricky bits when needed & without counting off frets slowing the flow as already mentioned. First pick I learned years back was Denver's 'this old guitar' I kinda think this tune is just a more embellished finger style. Thanks for showing a beautiful song in a way that I just MAY be even to play! Fingers crossed 👍
A superb lesson! Thank you.
Beautiful tone!
Excellent instruction. I've learned/created several fingerstyle songs using altered tunings (open D, open C, DADGAD), thinking standard tuning was kind of a pain for the thumb to get around, but this arrangement looks great. Thanks!
Excellent teaching lesson.
Great lesson really good teacher thanks
Best guitar teacher on KZread.
So, I feel a bit funny asking for another tutorial after all the hard work you've done on this, but you know, I think the world would be an even better place if you would bless us with a tutorial of Peace Like a River by Paul Simon.
Dammit! You are too damn good. You messed-up what I've been playing since 1975. Okay. Still trainable. Thank you for that!
I love your lessons.

Hey bro. Your the first one i thought i should ask this question. Could you do a full lesson for Molly Hatchet- Flirting with Disaster & Outlaws - Green Grass ang High Tides. Theres no videos ANYWHER for them. I lost patience for tabs long ago.
I can handle this ( Travis picking I have ) because of you I can accelerate the process, love the Blackbird chirp, thankyou!!!
The best lessons,thanks
Thank you very much! Another great lesson!
Great lesson!
Have to say as a seasoned guitarist myself, this is a very decent lesson. Always time for guys who get right down to business & this does just that.

Yeah, I found Andy after getting fed up with guys wanting to teach me music theory while teaching a song. I could teach music theory, oh yeah, I do. I just want a shortcut to working songs out myself from scratch.
Brilliant video, many thanks.
