The funny thing about real tennis is I really get the impression that the rules were built around the way the court happened to be designed in a particular palace. The penthouses needed to stick out to allow for observers - the ball needs to land on the roof of a penthouse during service. They needed windows so the observers could watch - the ball going through the windows means something specific. Even the grille at the back was presumably originally just for ventilation, then one day a prince hit the ball into the grille and proclaimed that henceforth, all real tennis courts must have a grille in that location and hitting it counts as winning the point! lol

Exactly, the rooms in the top elite palaces at the times were shaped like that. And then the people that slavishly follow the top elites (the upper middle classes) just copied the shapes. Now its a game that only middle elites can play because of the ridiculous shapes and rules.

Bless you, sir! I was trying to figure out how this game worked, but most other videos aren’t very clear, and anything written about it is quite cryptic. I tried watching a match, but it was really confusing. After watching even parts of this video, it made perfect sense! Thank you!

Great video, not many delve into the complexities of this sport at quite this level - well done ! At 43:02 your list of ways of winning a point should include, as the Receiver, being served a double fault (this might be considered a part of 3), and as either player having your opponent hitting the ball out of court. There may be others I’m sure. Your description of a chase being won by creating a chase on the other side of the net is interesting as, being a beginner I was unaware of this feature. This opens up many other opportunities for winning a chase other than simply winning the rally (?) in the normal way.

What an amazing video man...watched it till the end. As a competitive (lawn)tennis player,I find the real tennis extremely fun to look at and would love to try it one day. I understood all the rules,so great job on that since I'm not a native english speaker. Only thing I can't fully grasp are the chases, but I'm sure if I played a few games,I'd get the hang of it. Maybe one day there's gonna a real tennis court here in Czech rep. or somewhere nearby. Thank you for the video and have a great day.

Thank you!! Hopefully there are courts in more countries than there is now as currently real tennis is only really played in 4 countries worldwide. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!

Thank you so much. I have never played but would like to in Oxford (UK). Laws look very complicated but learnable. Often doing is more understandable than listening - I am a lawyer. The law of evidence is easier when practised than learning it in theory and isolation - monkey see; monkey do! Skills-wise looks like a combination of lawn tennis and squash played with tennis-like racquets and heavy non -bouncing balls. Looks very interesting to a croquet player (which I am).

Two points of explanation: The reason that the players switch sides after just one chase laid when one of the sides is in the lead at 40 or at advantage is that one of the sides is then just one stroke from winning the game, and there can't be any pending chase when the game is over. And the reason the last hazard gallery is the winning gallery is that it corresponds to the stroke line, like the last gallery corresponds to the last gallery line, and the ball falling on the stroke line wins the rest for the server.
