How to Play Numenera

Ойындар

Learn how to play Numenera, the award-winning tabletop roleplaying game from Monte Cook Games!
In this short how-to-play video, Monte Cook runs a Numenera scenario for players Shanna Germain, Bruce Cordell, and Jen Page, providing you with an opportunity to see the game in action, while getting an in-depth look at its unique features. Learn the basics about character creation, skills and abilities, the weird of the Ninth World, and important elements like Pools, Edges, and Effort -- directly from the creators themselves.
The video explains how easy it is to get started with Numenera, and shows why the game continues to win both awards and the hearts of gamers everywhere.
Here's a bit more about Numenera:
There Have Been Eight Previous Worlds
Each world stretched across vast millennia of time. Each played host to a race whose civilizations rose to supremacy but eventually died or scattered, disappeared or transcended. During the time each world flourished, those that ruled it spoke to the stars, reengineered their physical bodies, and mastered form and essence, all in their own unique ways.
Each left behind remnants.
The people of the new world-the Ninth World-sometimes call these remnants magic, and who are we to say they’re wrong? But most give a unique name to the legacies of the nigh-unimaginable past. They call them…
N U M E N E R A
In Numenera, player characters explore a world of mystery and danger to find leftover artifacts of the past: bits of nanotechnology, the datasphere threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices that defy understanding. Numenera is about discovering the wonders of the worlds that came before, not for their own sake, but as the means to improve the present and build a future.
With streamlined, intuitive rules, Numenera allows players to create characters in minutes and puts the emphasis back on story rather than laborious mechanics. Numenera is the latest creation of one of the biggest names in roleplaying games, award-winning designer and fan-favorite Monte Cook.

    This is a beautifully done video - and it will work great for people who are considering buying but don't have the opportunity to play! For those of us who are teaching the game, especially at conventions, the 30 minute video is a bit long... Using the raw footage of this, can you put together a short video that we can play on our tablets and then use a Q&A session from there in order to kick-start our games?

    it's a poor plagiarization of FATE. By poor I mean: in FATE players are much more empowered and responsible for the creation of the story. The XP system of Numenera is directly derived from the FATE points in the FATE mechanics. But in the latter, it's much more interesting, mechanics wise.

  • @Dracopol

    The rules are simple, although you can layer in some optional rules for more complexity. If your players like weapon proficiencies rather than just the basic light (2), medium (4) or heavy (6) damage of the game, there are rules for that (Weapon Distinctions, core rulebook p. 115). The main attraction is in the far-out setting and Monte Cook's great descriptions of weird locations, centering on kingdoms in the region called The Steadfast. He varies broad brush-strokes and fine details about characters and locations to spark some adventure ideas. The fact that old bizarre devices are everywhere has some resemblance to the old Gamma World RPG.

    I'm happy to see this come to life! One minor rules question: after rolling a 20 a player should have points spent on Effort refunded, right?

  • @Dracopol

    @Dracopol

    7 жыл бұрын

    No! The rules p. 88 say for Special Rolls for a 20: "If the PC spent points for a stat Pool on the action, the point cost for the action decreases to 0, meaning the character regains those points as if she had not spent them at all." This probably does not refer to Effort, but only to Actions with a Pool point cost. The rule is not mentioned anywhere that Effort is mentioned. So you have to commit to spend points on Effort, and the points are lost regardless of success or failure of the roll.

Also a 20-sided and 6-sided die, a colour map, and a small cheat-sheet. The adventure in the box also gives you a free download of a far-out sequel adventure from a Monte Cook web site. One thing I don't fully understand is, why use "Effort" in some of these cases. One point was, I want to climb a tree, its a difficulty of 3 and they used Effort. There was no immediate danger or rush, so why not attempt to climb the tree with the regular difficulty applied, if you fail, can you just try again and then use Effort? Is there anything from preventing you from trying to climb a tree more than once if you fail the first time?

  • @RockingJDesign

    @RockingJDesign

    Yes. Especially for newer players. The transparency doesn't affect the gameplay. In fact, it helps players make informed decisions on what they want to attempt in any given scene. Plus... it speeds things up if everyone knows that critter is a difficulty 4, or the interactions with the chief of palace security is a difficulty 5 when attempting to persuade him to let you see the King. :D

  • @PachaBau5
    @PachaBau57 жыл бұрын

    So I'm a little confused about something. If the difficulty is out of ten, and it's multiplied by three to determine what must be rolled to succeed, wouldn't that mean any difficulty of seven or higher is entirely impossible, since the die only goes up to twenty?

  • @Montecookgames

    @Montecookgames

    7 жыл бұрын

    Several things can reduce the difficulty of a task, such as being trained in a skill, specialized in a skill (reduces difficulty by two steps), a special tool (such as climbing gear for a climbing roll), spending effort (which can be more than one step for more powerful characters), assistance from another character, and so on.

    A Difficulty level of 7 needs a roll of 21 minimum, which is not possible on a 20-sided die. You have to think of all possible ways to reduce the difficulty: trained (-1) or specialized (-2) in a Skill; using some physical Asset that makes the job easier (-1), like a book to consult; or expending points from your Pools (-1 Difficulty for 3 points, but Edge in a Pool reduces your expense by 1. Higher-tier characters can spend 2 additional points from the Pool for additional Difficulty reductions. But watch out! The Pools are also your "hit points" so you don't want to expend them all!) If you can't do it, maybe you have a Cypher device of such an awesomely high level you could expend it to make things easier.

    Dracopol eggsactly that was a mistake, then?

  • @Dracopol

    @Dracopol

    7 жыл бұрын

    It was not a mistake. If an Action has a Pool cost just to make use of the action, like a Special Ability with a Might Cost or a Speed Cost, you get those points back. Example, a Tier-1 Jack gets Tricks of the Trade and one of their tricks chosen was Pierce (1 Speed point), add 1 point of damage if your weapon has a sharp point. Let's say you're up against an opponent and you swing a dagger and spend 1 Speed point for the Pierce ability. You get a reduction of 1 level of Difficulty because it's a small weapon, but you don't feel your chances are good enough so you also decide to spend 3 points of Effort from the Speed pool 2 (which is reduced by 1 if you have a Speed Edge of 1, so expend 2 Speed points). Let's say your roll is 20. That will have either +4 OR a Major Effect (to be chosen). It gets +1 damage because of the Pierce ability. The 1 Speed point spent on the Pierce ability in your attack is refunded, but not the 2 points you spent for Effort.

    I'm a huge planescape fan. It's my favorite. I really like what they're doing with 5e combining all the best of 4e, and before. Numenara is setting completely different from Planescape, but has all the mysterious other-worldly intrigue. Great game/story/setting/mechanics. Terrible rule descriptions. Not just the book. Even this video is long as hell, and doesn't really give important pertinent information. World design for the game itself is great, and the art is amazing. But I don't get the set design for this vid. I'm also not sure why they used a bookshelf for their background. As if to show people that this is an extremely boring game. It's pretty weird, and the acting isn't the best. Maybe if they put as much effort into making vids as they do in games, it would be better. (It could be worse like D&D's Phandelver playthrough video.) I made a post on Reddit explaining some of the basic info: www.reddit.com/r/numenera/comments/30ag6y/quick_overview_explanation_of_numenera/

    Hi there! Watch one of our several Numenera Actual Plays, like this one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/foWNu9mqZZPIlMo.html You're totally right that the bread-and-butter of actual play is deep character interactions, the meaning behind character choices, how they feel about the events and the results of the tactics. That's why we build in character connections and ties to the story right from character creation! This video is only meant to show the core mechanics.
