Building a Numenera Adventure | THE INFINITE CONSTRUCT

#numenera #rpg #cyphersystem
Numenera and the Cypher System open up a versatile approach to writing adventures. This video goes over one possible way to create an original Numenera adventure, relying on the underlying strengths of the Cypher System to move the numbers and crunch out of the way in order to jump straight into narrative and thematic concepts.

Another great video! I'd suggest another step though, somewhere between 2 and 4, and that is the rather expansive bestiary. Since combat is not the main focus of Numenera, the game's creatures are designed with story in mind. Creatures can have a peripheral role such as the adventure hook or can be the center your entire adventure is about. Whatever you come up with in steps 1, 2 and perhaps 3, there is a creature somewhere out there that perfectly fits your adventure - or, if not, that can be easily adjusted. I highly recommend spending some time on pondering which creature(s) to employ because one of Numenera's key aspects is the otherness which the weird monsters and animals (and neither of the two) convey.

I am mid video and this video is starting to give me the confidence to run a game of Numenera. I’m worried since it’s more discovery and narrative oriented instead of just combat focused. I love this setting and want to play sooo bad, so I’m just gonna get a game going

Amazing video, and the first I've seen of this channel. I was planning an adventure called "The Wrath of the Sun" involving increasingly powerful solar storms beginning to influence the Numenera. This helps me flesh out the story and gives me some focus on how to get from point A to B without wild jumps and gives me some ideas with cults worshipping the storms

Thank you! And I'm so glad you found this useful. The answer is a resounding YES: I will be doing more videos using these steps, but also other methods, to brainstorm more adventures, campaigns, encounters, sandbox environments, etc. I am ALSO thinking about possibly doing some livestreams where I'll build adventures and campaigns step-by-step from random ideas. That's a bit further down the horizon though, so definitely keep in touch and subscribe so you'll know when that's happening, if you're interested.

I always had problems creating Numenera specific campaigns, but this video has definitely helped me better understand how to go about doing so, namely by taking the weirdness factor and cranking it up several notches. Much obliged for the assistance.

Another clear, well- structured video with useful ideas. Broadly speaking, I write rpg adventures the same way. I have a tendency to come up with a general concept and then let it mull around in my head for a while. I find that I come up with further ideas and connections that way. And then I can get to the more structured part of writing it down.

I really like this video but I'm curious how you would make the example hooks relevant to the characters and make the players care? I think back to when I was getting in to writing Cyberpunk campaigns and a more experienced DM told me (I'm paraphrasing) "An old acquaintance of the party has been killed might be a hook in the simplest terms but it has no bait. A member of the party needs to be framed for the murder, the murdered NPC needs to have been in possession of a secret that could harm the party if he revealed it before his death, the murdured NPC needs to have contracted the party for security/protection and have been killed while the party was preparing, etc." I'm thinking about say "the party hears of a strange weather phenomena." Unless the party was formed specifically as a group of storm chasers what is their personal motivation for following the lead? Is the weather moving across the landscape threatening the home city of one of the PCs? Is there a rumour that the weather started right after the PCs did something and they're worried they're responsible? etc... Even something lazy like "solve the puzzle, get big money" can bait the hook depending on the motivations of the players/PCs. As I said, really love the video and always appreciate good Numenera content. Just want to float the idea that a hook needs bait. It's the difference between the characters having motivation vs the players doing something because the GM mentioned it so it's obvious that's where the next story line is. To use my Cyberpunk example, "As your party sits around the bar celebrating your latest score you see a news story on the TV behind the bar. Spinner, your party's informant, has been killed under suspicious circumstances." vs the same thing followed by "As the news story wraps up pictures of and appear on the screen under the word 'WANTED'. Panicking pulls out their phone and hurriedly finds the news release... the police want two of you for questioning. Apparently security camera footage shows you leaving Spinner's apartment after the time of death. You notice a few people in the bar looking your way..."

Thank you so much for this comment! And you're totally right on this. As I lay it out in the video, this is very much a way to write adventures to have ready *before* thinking about players. If you're dealing with current players where you want the hooks to be relevant to them, you should probably be less random in generating ideas, and more specific when it comes to ideas that will play into character backstory, actions, or theme. Some players and characters are just in a game for the fun of it, however, and will be fine with "you hear of X thing happening in the area." So yeah, if you're writing an adventure for an existing campaign or want to involve existing characters in something this, attaching bait, as you put it, to the hook is very important.

My .02$ - it can be not so much needed in Numenera. Cause this game is about exploration. And if you don't want to explore interesting and unknown things, than why would you play it? But for "characters related" I agree. My campaign is a big hexagonal map of a lot of (really a lot of) points of interests. It is map that generated by device in the small town. Town which players need to defend and develop. And this makes exploration so much more valuable and life-depending.

This is yet another excellent video. I would love to watch your story telling process in practice during a recorded game while you GM. I hope your players allow you to record them for a playthrough video in the future and if you need willing players, I've got dibs on volunteers. ;)

@@THEINFINITECONSTRUCT Worth it, My normal campaigns dissolved when COVID hit, so figured that it would be the best time to begin the home brew world using Numenera ideas. Sticking to the High Fantasy theme with Sci-fi sprinkled in all over the world. The world building of Numenera is what most fascinates me, incorporating cities/towns with massive relics of the past.

There are a whole bunch of ways I approach writing for Numenera; this is an easy way for me to generate quick one-shot ideas, or chunks of a campaign where there's a desired outcome. I would say that for a sandbox game--a topic I will certainly address in a future video--I would focus on the first two or three steps I mentioned on this topic, and then just continuing to duplicate that process until you feel like you can present a very dynamic and open-ended world to your players.

This is really interesting video as point of view. But as for other video it would be good if as you proceed with the text video show what are you talking about. Even this list of hooks or 7-step would be good enough. I sound like some kind of critic. Ideas and explanation are good. Just more of related visual would be nice!
