This Mother guitar lesson will demonstrate how to play all of this Pink Floyd classic note-for-note.
I have split the lesson into two videos. One covers all the chords and chord progressions and the second video will demonstrate how to play David Gilmour's incredible guitar solo. :)
The most challenging aspect of learning "Mother" will probably be some of the odd rhythms. The chords themselves are with just one exception, simple open position chords. Within the first lesson video lesson I will demonstrate an easy way to feel the rhythm instead of having to do a bunch of counting. I am pretty sure this is how Roger Waters felt the rhythm anyway.
Within those strummed rhythm chords you will also be adding a few hammers-ons. They aren't very difficult to play except for the fact that you need to be able to time then correctly. When I demonstrate the verse I will show you the proper picking pattern and how it build up to the hammer-on so you will know exactly where to place it in the rhythm.
For guitar players though, the real star of the show is David Gilmour's instantly recognizable guitar solo. This solo lesson will break the entire guitar solo down into phrases that you can study one at a time.
I encourage you to not only learn the notes of this solo, but also to pay attention to how it is constructed. It is a fantastic example of creating a musical statement that tells a story on it's own. If you really listen to it you can hear that it has a definitive beginning, middle and ending musically. It is, simply put, a perfect musical statement from beginning to end. In fact, even if you have never heard this solo before, after listening to it a couple times I am sure you will easily be able to hum along with it. Pure genius!
Of course, we are talking about David Gilmour here. He seems to be to create memorable guitar solos in his sleep. The guitar solo in "Mother" is just another fine example of this.
Hopefully you guys can get through the videos in a relatively quick fashion. As long as you listen to the chord progressions and try to follow along with the original recording, playing them in time should come pretty quickly.
As for the solo, once again it is pretty short but sweet. Good Luck!
Carl..

I see what you're saying but it's very very easy not that technically difficult
When ever I can't figure one out with other videos and my ears this is where I come. :)
Good Lord. Soooo many years later and just hearing fragments of these Gilmour licks causes every hair to stand on end. Thanks Carl
Dude you’re just awesome. Your teaching style is perfect. Right tempo, right notes, everything. I’m confident that I can speak for a huge number of people in saying that we so appreciate you taking the time to do this. You’re an awesome player too. Thanks again

It's incredible how similar David Gilmore's solo from "Mother" is to the extended solo on "Pigs On the Wing" part 2 from the 8 track version and played by Pink Floyd guitarist Snowy White. I absolutely love both, and a testament of being a teenager in the 70's. Once again a phenomenal rendering and tutorial from Carl at 365!
This is THE greatest channel on KZread. Thank you.

Carl Brown ~ hey Carl breaking that solo down without slipping up or getting confused or tripping up was pretty damn amazing . You see it all the time , guy does a famous solo then shows the bits and parts gets to back peddling and wishes he was just playing it through and wishing everybody good luck haha . thanks man
I like your teaching style better than anybody else on KZread. I would love to be able to get in person lessons. Alas ....... I used to be a guitarist until I was injured and received a TBI. That messed my brain up so badly that it was a year before I could once again do the normal everyday things that we take for granted. My brain function never did return to 100% normal so it was like learning to play all over again. I knew what I wanted my fingers to do but my brain was telling them to do something totally different. I gave up for many years until I was able to accept that I had to approach it as though I had never played before. I have gotten back a lot of my skill in the last year through your lessons and the help of a Neurologist I found that is also a guitarist and uses music to help restore brain function to people who had traumatic brain injuries like mine. My memory will probably never again store things in a way where I can pull them up at will but I can reference back to your lessons and remember. I guess I went a long way around the block there to say THANK YOU for helping me regain my ability to do the only thing that gives me peace.
I did it!!! one and a half hours to learn and a broken high E string, but I got it!!!yayyy

Carl, please do dogs and echoes, i know they're long but at least the solos, pretty please =)
Carl guitar whisperer Brown you are a legend and master when it comes to simplifying guitar lessons.
Aewsome! Gilmour is a genius. The second phrase sounds like a maternal comfort. Anyone else noticed It? Thanks, Carl.
I've spent the last 4 days learning this from your video -- thanks!
Carl, I love how many videos you make with so many songs I like. You are the man, Carl Brown for president 2020!
Thank you so much for all these lessons!
Amazing. Thanks man. Appreciate your straight forward style for intermediate players.
Thank u. This lesson makes more sense than the others which requires movin up and down the neck more than what u show👍👍
Great guitar teacher playing a beautiful song!

Nice thanks man
Thanks!!
i love this guy
Amazing lesson, I'd love to see a lesson for the solo in "fat old sun" or anything off of animals. Have a nice day
thats cool AF carl
Thanks for the lesson! If you don't mind my asking, what effects do you use to achieve Gilmour's tone?

Andy Sullivan, Nice question. If you've already known, please let me Know. Tks
you freaking smoked that song man!!!
This is fantastic stuff, as are all your videos! Sorry if I missed, it but can you say what pedals you are hooked up to? A fuzz pedal of some type? It's adding to the "gilmour" flavor that I'm not achieving with just my fender. Thanks!
awesome lessons. easy to follow. any chance you could lay out "combination" by aerosmith?
I've listened to this for ages and got quite a lot of it but I was unsure exactly where he was on the fret board between/during some of the phrases. Most of the other players I've seen attempt this were right down on the 2nd, 3rd fret on the bottom end of this solo which didn't seem right (given there's a bend of a full tone down there). My question is: How did you break it down? I've listened to this at slower speeds but the harmonics make it hard to hear exactly what's happening. Impressive how you've done it.
Excellent lesson! Where can I get a TABs?
The solo is easy to play but the rake technique before the bending at 4:32 has given me countless problems. A truly insidious step, I know that I have to improve myself first with the rake technique because currently its success is an unknown.
You the man Carl I can't thank you enough I can play some of my favorite Gilmour jams now Because of your awesome Videos But could you please do one on Dogs And thanks again These video are priceless
Almost perfect, except I believe the last two bends are actually on the B string above the 12th fret
If you could work up a lesson for a band called "Madison Rising" their rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" I'm sure lots of people would appreciate it. A couple of their other songs as well would be great ! Thanks

Praying you're referring to floyd as "he" to reference specifically Gilmour?

Bro. Obviously
Why can't I find any tabs for this solo where any notes are on the lpw e string and those notes are down on the 2nd and 3d fret....is it wrong?
What effect do u use?
which scale is this?
Is that a harmonic minor note in there?
i noticed you did the famous riffs for money. Can you do the solo?
What effects ? Cmon 🇬🇧
I know I’m 5 years late but please do echoes!
please teach how to play "We've got everything " by Modest Mouse
love the lesson but the second phrase just doesn't sound quite right to me
The latters a not me see
U got a long ringfinger
