**VARIANT RULES**
Keep these in mind regarding monopoly, especially for this variant:
1) Objective of the game is to own everything, and money management is a huge part of this game.
2) Main strategy is to wheel and deal and bankrupt as many as you can.
Rules of the variant game:
1) Shuffle and cut cards before dealing.
2) Roll dice to see who gets first card (usually highest). Deal cards clockwise, one card at a time. Cards must be distributed evenly, i.e., everyone must have the same number of cards. Extra cards are held by the bank until someone purchases them during regular play, i.e., if available for purchase, person landing on the property can choose to do so.
3) Pay for your properties. You may have to mortgage what you have already paid for to raise enough funds to pay for the rest of your properties.
4) Wheel and deal segment. This may take a few minutes. Try to get your hands on sets. Sometimes the deals are one-on-one, sometimes it’s a multiplayer deal, sometimes it’s the whole table.
5) Roll to see who moves first. Do this after the first Wheel and Deal session.
6) You must go completely around once, go once around the board, to be able to build on your properties. Going directly to jail does not count as one rotation. Any movements due to “Chance” or “Community Chest” cards count as movement around the board.
7) Any taxes or fines collected through “Chance” or “Community Chest” cards and interest paid to unmortgage property (10%) goes into Free Parking. Landing in Free Parking gets you the loot.
8) When in bankruptcy, you cannot wheel and deal, you must pay your creditor or forfeit everything to the person you owe money to. All property must be mortgaged before the handover.
9) If a bankruptcy occurs due to money owing to the bank, then the bank acquires all the properties, if mortgaged they will now be unmortgaged, and they will be available for purchase during regular play.
10) The person that is rolling the dice cannot hold up the game to make a deal. Players should be trying to make deals before it is their turn to roll the dice.
11) No rolling dice if there is payment in progress on the board.
12) There has got to be enough time between turns to allow people to react. This maybe based on time (5 to 10 seconds), announcements that you/someone is rolling dice, few shakes of the dice, etc.
13) Once you hear the dice roll, it is your responsibility to keep track of what has occurred.
14) If you rat someone out you must pay half their rent, i.e., it is the responsibility of the owner of a property to request rent for that property, not anyone else.
15) Dice tilts are acceptable as a roll, just like craps, however, if the majority of the players agree that it is too close to call, i.e., the tilt is too much, they may request a re-roll.
16) Dice must land on the board to be counted.
17) Rent can be collected in jail, making jail a safe haven.
18) You can only build as many houses and hotels that the market can absorb, as many as there are, 32 houses and 12 hotels. If there are no houses or hotels available to be built, you cannot build unless you are dismantling building on another property you own. One useful strategy is to build only houses possibly preventing someone else from building.

    Sweet! I had the pleasure of taking a course on Analog Gaming during my Masters in Library & Info Science. We got credit for playing boardgames in class! It's so interesting to see how people can taking an existing system, rule set, etc and create their own variants. Boardgames are also a great tool for teaching yourself how to teach others.

    My family play a pretty cool house rule in which if you own two stations (North & South of board or East & West of board), if you land on one of them you may use the crease in the board as a train line and travel to the opposite side of the board. You may even charge a toll for other players to use it if they land on it. I’ve introduced it when playing with friends and now they always use it. It really adds to the game in my opinion, try it next time you play 😅

    I thought for sure that point 17 was going to be that any player who rolls the dice off the board two consecutive turns loses a finger to the free parking and the next person to land on free parking decides if that person can have it back or if they get to keep it as a souvenir lol. Great video Chycho. I like playing with custom rules for Monopoly because playing by their rules turns into a marathon two day event.

    If two players are in jail at the same time, then they have to fight. Each player rolls a die, with the higher roller winning the fight. The winner takes one property from the loser, and the loser is "crippled", meaning he can roll only one die for one turn around the board, after he is out of jail (but allowing for the normal three attempts to roll doubles to get out of jail).

    as the banker I put a tax on trade and sales. Each party must pay half the properties value to the bank. and pay 40% of any sale to the bank. also every time you pass go you must pay 10$ in taxes for any house you have and 20$ for hotels. It cuts down on team ups and adds some realism. also if you go the jail the bank takes a random property back as it was used in a crime, it will be either auctioned off or put back on the market for double its price.

    Great video. We also have casino games (poker, craps, blackjack) and board games (Catan, Concordia, etc.) nights but almost never play Monopoly because it takes a long time and mostly comes down to luck. It could often go indefinitely with some of the deals made. Your version speeds it up and also adds some more skill in the trades. Have you ever thought of combining bluffing elements into the game? For example, maybe players keep their property cards hidden and have the ability to bluff about owning a property. Not sure how that can work but an interesting thought.

  • @chycho

    @chycho

    I would love to be able to incorporate bluffing into the game - that's the one aspect of poker which makes it one of the greatest games ever created - not sure how we would go about it though. We thought about adding blind auctions to the game for the cards that have not been claimed yet but haven't implemented it yet - guess we're still enjoying this version too much. If you guys do end up trying this out and figure out a way to add some bluffing, please let us know and we'll try it from our end as well.

    Hey Chycho! Awesome video as usual. Love seeing the channel grow! :) I posted a comment a couple of months ago pointing out how much I think you'd enjoy Yuval Noah Harari's book 'Homo Deus'. I just started reading 'Sapiens', and I cannot recommend it enough as well. These two works present a whole new perspective on who we, as a species got here and what our future can possibly hold. I do think they will sooner or later redefine everything we know about science, history, philosophy, etc. If you got the time, I definitely recommend you giving them a try. Have the best day! :)

    Hi Gellert, thank you for the well wishes, brother, I hope you have an awesome day as well :) As for the book, "A Brief History of Tomorrow", I remember looking it up and it looks amazing. I book marked it and it is definitely on my to read list, just got to find the time. Thanks again for the reminder as well, to do and to read lists do slip away from me at times so it's good to be reminded. I'm almost at the end of the third book on the Riftwar Saga, one more to go after this is done. We'll see what I pick up after that, but I am leaning towards Robert Anton Wilson's The Illuminatus! Trilogy, but we'll see.

    Interesting variant. Doubt ill ever convince my gaming group to try it because 1. There is so much choice out there for board games and 2. They all dont think highly of monopoly, mainly because they are used to playing the standard version. But ill keep it in mind. Thanks for the ideas.

    @DrewIsARealBoy

    @@chycho I would love to see that, I am familiar with auction drafts in fantasy which is what i believe you are refering to but basically what i mean, you would roll to set up the order, lets call it 1 - 4 First Person Picks - Boardwalk (or maybe the smaller sets are worth more in your version making that a first pick) 2nd person takes Park place to block OR maybe starts working on their own monopoly expecting 3rd to block or 4th to block 3rd person makes there pick 4th person picks (now the snake starts) 4th person picks again 3rd person picks 2nd person 1st picks 1st again 2nd 3rd 4th 4th again 3rd 2nd 1st until you are out of places to pick. just a SNAKE style It might too much for you but I wonder if you could ever get a twitch game going, using discord for audio and have 4 or so viewers play with you while you make the moves, either way, i LOVE your content for ASMR and more thank you also love that you get called Serj all the time, are you perhaps armenian? grew up on SOAD

    Maybe you touch on this (I must ask before I forget) but what about a situation where the property owner forgets to collect, or doesn't notice someone landed on their property, and they don't collect the rent... what happens if that property owner remembers they didn't collect the rent and yells out, during another players turn, about the money they are "owed". I hope I made myself clear enough.. 😄

  • @chycho

    @chycho

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Niki, great question, and the answer, once the next person rolls the dice it's over, they can't collect rent - and the next person has to give a long enough delay before rolling the dice, an opportunity for the landlord to notice. So if you don't collect rent when rent is due, too bad, you can't collect rent later.... and one other rule we've added, if another player points out to the landlord that someone has landed in their property and they should collect rent, then that person has to pay half the rental fee - ratting someone out has a penalty ;)
