The right way to play Monopoly

How do you win Monopoly? And how do you keep it fun at the same time?

Is there a right way to play Monopoly?
Brian Valentine takes a stab at the answer - he was the United States representative to the 2015 World Monopoly championships, where he earned a third-place finish. As the above video shows, playing Monopoly right involves learning the rules all over again, processing key strategies, and, above all, valuing the people you play it with.
Valentine shares his knowledge about probability heat maps that show the likelihood of landing on a certain space, nuances of gameplay around houses and hotels, and even a few tips on making games fun instead of rancorous.

There are tons of articles that break down the math of Monopoly. While it’s not the only ingredient to playing Monopoly right, it’s an important one. This Business Insider article by Walt Hickey is a great primer, and this Thrillist article by Daisy Barringer gives you even more tips.

Most top Monopoly players follow in the footsteps of Philip Orbanes, who’s written a few Monopoly books, including this guide. His general board game history book, The Game Makers, is a fun read (but not really about gameplay strategy).

It's so that there can be a contrast shown between how every day people play and how experts play, and also gives a baseline for people of "this is how most people think of/play the game" so then the "right" way to play can springboard off of that and change that assumption set by the non-experts. It's something that's often used in educational video in order to show "this is what most people think is the case, and now let me surprise you with the truth".

I know you're just joking, but don't be the banker. one of the rules of monopoly is that you can squat on people's property. If someone lands on your property, and you don't notice until after the next person rolls the dice, that someone doesn't have to pay you rent. If you are the banker, you have something distracting you from the board. there have been times where I've gotten away with not paying, and other times when I've lost hundreds or thousands of dollars in rent because I got distracted.

Say ur low on money or need to pay the bank or another player, you mortgage houses for some money, but that house can no longer charge rent nor can you build houses on that house or the same color if you have all color properties. In order to umorgage them and them to be able to charge rent again, u pay back 10% of the mortgage price and u turn the card over again. So basically it is a source of money when u owe someone

Me and my cousins play monopoly in a quite different way, i am sure some of you might like it...there is 3 extra concept added.. 1) we form a team of 2 player and usually 3 teams used to play the game( 6 players but there can be 4 teams if 8 players are there). 2) Intuitively you know that you ll enjoy the game if there is a competition in the game. So to increase competition we put limitations on the no. Of deeds( Sites, stations and utilities). Which is 4 for each player and 8 for each team( or in case of 4 teams, 3 for each player and 6 for each team). As a consequence you ll see that each team gets a equal no. Of deeds with difference of just 1 or 2. 3) Now the best rule we came up is of dealing window which opens once, when each and every deeds is bought up by the teams, So now to make a monopoly on different sites we make a deal with other team to complete our 3 or 2 deeds of same colour to build hotel or houses.. And then follow the rest of the rules of monopoly honestly, and be loyal to the banker, i am sure you ll enjoy more than the classical or bookish version of monopoly...

As a kid my strategy was to buy up everything I land on no matter my cash flow. It worked out very well in my household. I would be able to have monopolies quickly! I would buy the cheap properties next to boardwalk and put hotels on them. My family would wonder why I would pay a pretty penny to have those two cheap properties. It always worked in my favor though. I would be very aggressive in trading almost paying everything I got just to get the last color in the property set in order to start building houses. I love monopoly!

I think the standard US Monopoly is based on Atlantic City, hence the Boardwalk. That doesn't sound anything special, unlike Park Lane and Mayfair, which are in one of the most expensive places to live in the world!
