About time someone told us to chill out and learn the songs we love first in basic form , I'm 60 soon and have been playing about years now at first I put a lot of pressure on myself, simply because I felt I needed to play fancy stuff after a few months to impress my friends. And like a lot of us I went technical learning scales triads etc and very little cords, but when tried exactly what you explained in this lesson and got off the tabs it was night and day with the progress , very happy you made this video it has reassured me with my changes....

Hey, I'm 65 and started playing 3 yrs ago. If I can do it, you can too!!! IN TIME is the most important thing. I know players who've been at it for years and they quite frankly suck because, regardless of the complexity of the chords they're playing or the strum pattern, they don't play in time. When I'm not happy with my playing, it's usually because I know I wasn't playing "in the pocket." We need to learn to play in time without stops and starts. Rhythm is everything.

I have seen and learned from you on KZread before. I really enjoy your teaching style. I am 64 and have been self taught for about 8 years. now. There is such an overwhelming amount of information out there so it's easy to get lost with whom to follow. You are one of the best teachers out there. Thank you for your time and hard work helping me learn this wonderful instrument 🎸

Glad I came upon these videos. The technical side has taken the fun out of learning for me. Your philosophy makes perfect sense to me and playing songs I love is why I’ve started on this journey. Thank you!

I've been playing off and on for decades. And playing / practicing daily for 5+ years. I can't play happy birthday or any other simple songs. I simply can not hear and I have taken many lessons to try and fix this issue. It is beyond frustrating.

Don't get frustrated. Everything will come with time. Keep practicing and you will get there.

Interesting video, I took up the electric guitar as an older beginner back in February 2016 (I was 47 at the time). I was fortunate enough to find some excellent guitar teachers from KZread, where I learned to play the rhythm part (lead guitar was too hard for me), of many AC/DC songs, plus many other songs from other rock bands. I’m not particularly good, but what I play is recognisable, I practice every day on average 1.5 to 2hrs a day, it’s been a ton of fun.

This is sage advice. Music is all about songs. Even classical music tells a story, which is what songs do too. Ear training first. Thank you for this great lesson.

This is so helpful! And, that part about learning entire songs is exactly where I am at 18 months into playing. I now have enough skills to do the things I need to do and putting that all in the service of song playing is the next crucial step. Thanks. Learning by ear still feels like a magic trick, but I will work on it.

You nailed me dead to rights. I started off years ago learning all my open chords and bar chords. Then progressed into triads. Now I'm a master at the pentatonic scale, major scale, modes. But If you told me to play a song complete from beginning to end, I have maybe four that I could do. I completely got immersed in the technical side of it and understanding how and why the guitar works. But I think that's just the way I approach things, very analytically. Now I'm going to go back to song learning and taking everything I have with it. This is my next step of progression. Thank you!
