How To Play Arcade Stick Effectively, Universal (Optimal) Arcade Stick Grip + Lever Philosophy

How To Play Arcade Stick Effectively, Universal (Optimal) Arcade Stick Grip + Lever Philosophy. I've created this video to demonstrate what I (and many Tekken players) believe to be the optimal method of using arcade stick. I played the stick with an untrained grip for three years, but once I needed to learn more complex inputs (like Korean Backdash), I discovered this style which I think is universal across all games, not just specifically Tekken. It's just common among Tekken players because of Tekken's high demand inputs. This grip is also useful for Guilty Gear and Street Fighter, especially for instant airdash and double quarter supers.
I strongly encourage all shmup and fighting game players to check this style out and at least give it a try for a while. I think a properly trained method of playing arcade stick will really cut down on frustration and adjustment time for new stick players. This is an abridged version of a previous and popular video on the channel, so if you want to see the more lengthy original version here is the link: • How To Play Arcade Sti...

Just something to note on the KBD input motion shown in this video: QCB works for any character that doesn't have a sway. If you try to use this method with characters like Bryan, Paul and Nina you will you get their back sway instead. You must do the proper input of B, D/B, B, Neutral. It's also worth noting that doing the QCB variation means you might spend more frames crouched and are more susceptible to getting clipped by random mids in the middle of your backdash.

I’ve come to a realisation using stick for shmups lately . You really have to hype yourself up and concentrate on making your wrist as limber as possible and really get that stick moving quick . To get a pixel or 2 tap dodge you have to have Bruce Lee speed hands , you can’t just sit there casually jerking the stick around with cave shmups . You have to get in the zone so to say. It also comes to personal preference with the spring as well. Personally I like the minimum resistance I could have with the stick still springing back to neutral quick. I’d almost like to play a frictionless stick for shmups if there was a way for it to centre itself quickly. Also To quickly go on a tangent .. I think the inputs for ultra street fighter 4 are part of what made the game so addictive. Doing long double fadc combos felt like playing a piece of music. I really hope someone else invents a game where you have to do these learned choreographed inputs. I wonder if you play beat mania in a stick? Have I just invented a new thing!?.

thanks a lot for both videos! I just got into fighting games, and started with Tekken 8! this video helped a lot with the grips, and especially the part where you said in the other video '' to do it the same way every time'' which helped me very much, I tend to just go with my instincts sometimes, and end with 3 or 4 ways to do the same motion and it gets inconsistent fast

Same request! I've got a piano-style 3 fingers thing going but I wonder if I'd do better learning to place them differently and whether or not to work in my thumb. Most people say "do what's comfortable", but I know from playing the piano that these tiny details are important and its hard to unlearn bad habits later.

One thing to be wary of is the placement of the thumb when performing motions to the left. I got into the bad habit of sitting my thumb at a 4 O'clock position on the balltop - which is fine when using a lenient stick like a Sanwa JLF - but when I used anything else a move left can sometimes result in unexpected up left inputs. My simple advice is to make sure the thumb rests at 3 O'clock, which likely means adjusting where you hand rests on the control panel by moving it up a couple of centimetres and slightly modifying your grip of the stick.

Playing shmups of fighting games with an arcade stick is just a lot more fun, and I always encourage people to just try it out. It takes a little getting used to, but I think it's worth it. Keyboard is probably more accurate for both genres, but I don't actually care. The most straightforward way I have heard of how to use a stick is to use your fingers to move it rather than your wrist, and long as it feels comfortable and you can get the inputs easily, then it doesn't matter if your method matches up perfectly with every youtube video out there.

I definitely agree with some people in the comments that wine grip is good for novice players trying to practice inputs. I've been using it to practice the ones in this vid and I notice that my pinky and my thumb naturally guide my wrist where it should be so I have the right "hand posture" to make this feel more normal. I've been really enjoying the feeling of playing stick for the first time, it's like electricity at your fingertips. Especially in shmups its helped me with figure eights and c-dodges and any circular motion. The swivel on the top piece is really your best friend and it feels so satisfying to pull off a sick c-dodge and have that ball top swivel a full 180. Its precision and fluency all in one. PS I'm trying to customize my stick with buttons that have "grooves" or indents around the side, but I cant find a reliable search term to get what I'm looking for. To anyone who knows what the hell I'm talking about plz hrlp.

I come from a heavy fighting game background and only in the last year or so have I rediscovered my love for arcade games and especially shmups. But I am also a guitar player and I believe in a concept called "economy of motion" which is to do what you want with as little movement as possible. There is no way I would move my thumb for an up input they way you describe here, but even so, most of our input movements look pretty much the same. I use the "modified wine glass" grip with the side of my hand resting on the stick and all of my inputs are made with the first two fingers and my thumb. I see now that my thumb is basically at the 5 o'clock position and the first joint of my fingers are around 11 o'clock. I naturally just curl my other fingers so they are below the shaft, so I guess its like holding a wine glass and turning your hand 90 degrees. I've been doing it this way for years and I have played pretty much every fighter in existence from 2005 on. But I don't like bat tops, my grip still sorta works, but the only time I use a bat top is when I am at a buddy's house trying out a new stick or something, he likes Korean levers, and it makes me really have to focus on finding corners because there is no gate. Happy belated New Year, looking forward to a whole bunch of awesome stuff from the shmup-tubers out here! By the way I found your channel through Shmup Junkie dropping your name.

I think this is roughly my philosophy and how I play as well. I am all about as little motion as possible for extremely precise inputs, my actual hand does very little, it just kinda sits there, my fingers do most of the work. my palm never touches my balltop, I also cannot really use bat tops for the same reasons! I am with you! oh damnit I also am a guitarist... I think you just nailed my persona to a T lmao.

A lot of 2D fighting game players are using bal ltop sticks, so that grip is often recommended. With a bat top (and especially so with Korean levers) you'd mostly be forced to use the grip shown in this video. I think the idea is that your inputs might get a bit more difficult on the P2 side with this sort of grip, and so the wine glass is preferred by most. I've always used a grip similar to this but with just the pinky tucked underneath on ball tops before transitioning to a Korean stick last year.

Just a personal opinion but thought I'd post it as maybe it will help someone?I found that when I tried stick I wasnt playing any worse but not any better either.I Then I realised gradually that I was overtjinking the mechanics of the stick and constantly comparing it to a controller.Once I realised this, I thought " just let the stick do it's job" and I began to see a big improvement in my play. Of course technique is important and I am fortunate in that my hand naturally moves and holds the stick as you suggest in your vid(maybe due to years playing the violin when younger) but I also think maybe players can have a tendency to 9ver expect miracles from a gadget, when maybe they should just relax and go with the flow and gain technique and improvement thru trial and error and practice..

I don't even really know how I hold the stick, just that it works and I can do things consistently enough in fighting games regardless of the side that I'm on. Doing it and looking at it, it's not that different from what you do. Maybe a little looser, using the tips of my fingers less, but I use a ball top, not a bat top, and that probably does change things slightly. Also, I'm sure that it varies depending on the game. Sometimes I hold it tighter, sometimes looser, and I can tell. It's not a planned style, it pure instinct, developed organically from playing for thousands of hours, until my hands were in pain and callused (and even bleeding, once) and until I stripped most of the paint from the left corner of my stick. Now it's bare, corroded metal on both corners, and the lever itself has already been replaced once and will probably be replaced again. And one button barely works and another kinda works most of the time. I really should fix this thing. Just from looking at it, you can tell that it is owned by a maniac. That's how you really master the stick, you play until your fingers feel like they're going to fall off.

The engagement area is huge, it's very difficult to "correct" or change movements (probably fixed by a restrictor?) I'm a noob but honestly if I buy a fairly expensive arcade stick and get a shitty experience I get frustrated. I don't have the time nor the energy to go investigate and master arcade sticks until I have one stick that I can play with... at this point I don't know what to do.

Yeah you probably need to upgrade your lever parts. Try by starting with a bit of a heavier spring and yes def get the bigger actuator, get that deadzone slimmed down. :-)

@@Albertredneck in my personal opinion, making hardware changes isn't my first move. it taks EVERYONE MONTHS to learn how to work a stick properly, it will feel loose and sloshly, like the first time you 're learning a new instrument or something. its not something that comes naturally to pad players (which we all are at heart unless you grew up in arcades forreal) - and takes a lot of practice and effort. no one comes out the gate with clean skills, its gonna feel that way for a bit. I think you should practice more, and then after about 1-2 solid months of concerted effort, THEN make hardware changes. THAT, OR, just play on pad right? there's nothing better about stick than pad it is NOT a superior input so do not believe the hype there.

The issue I have with arcade sticks has nothing to do with the stick or movements, it's with the placement of my other hand over the buttons. Basically after about 10 to 15 minutes of holding one button for auto-fire, my right hand will start to shake. I have tried different size arcades sticks, different positions, and changing around which button is the auto-fire button. Nothing helps. I don't see the button side of the arcade ever covered. I just gave up on arcade sticks for Shmups and I just use Saturn style pads. Arcade sticks are fine for me for fighting games but I just can't keep my right hand from shaking on Shmups.

i used to have similar problems with holding down autofire being super uncomfortable, turned out my problem was that I was using way too much force. lightening up and almost just resting my fingers on the buttons helped me a lot.

Which finger are you using? I usually use my thumb for holding down auto fire. My first thought is that the muscles in your fingers are just not used to being used as much, and it would just take a lot more use to train them.

@@granddaddy_funk I have done everything that has been suggested already. I am not new to the genre as my complaint my lead you all to believe. I own multiple sticks, I have tried every finger/button, wrist rests, and nothing stops it from working. I have tried stretching and finger exercises and they don't stop it either. At least there are great Saturn pads out there like the Razor Raion and the Hori fighting Octa pad.

The only way I ever came to liking a lever grip was to not have a grip at all for movement and just hover hand it (index+middle+thumb entirely for command/longer dodges). But also most of my FG play has been on 2D+airdasher games w/ light tension springs on my levers, playing Tekken with my grip was a bitch with any character I picked haha.

Something that definitely isn't optimal is wearing a ring which increases weight in your hand, slowing you down, and also restricts the movement of one of your fingers and can impact the stick and negatively affect your grip on it.
