How to Play Against Awkward Long Pips in Table Tennis

There's some additional advice on playing long pimples in my first comment. Hit read more!
This video will explain the strategies you can employ to play against unorthodox/awkward long pips players. These are the types of players that just "put their paddle in the way" and it can be one of the most frustrating experiences in table tennis if you don't know what to do. Luckily, I'm here to help!

Hit read more on this comment for some more advice against pips. Put the video at .25 speed at 6:12ish and at 9:50ish and watch how it bounces Yes, this is a reupload. I needed to make some edits. Disclaimer: There is nothing wrong with being a long pips blocker, and this video is not meant to offend anyone that plays with this style. It is simply meant to teach newer players what to do if they encounter this style, as it can be confusing and frustrating to play against if you haven't seen it before. I know some people need to use pips due to age, and some don't take the sport as seriously as others; if you play with long pips and do just like to just block the ball around, as long you are having fun, that's all that matters! There are some great and talented pips players out there and this video is not meant to take anything away from them, many of whom did have to work hard to achieve their current playing level. Outro got messed up - sorry!! Thanks for the help Andy (go sub to him) - kzread.info/dron/z2xpgxjPB4Rp9QrdPe2XAw.html Timestamps (also in desc): 0:00 - Intro 1:21 - How long pips work 2:25 - How to rally with long pips blocks/bumps 4:41 - Serving to long pips 8:47 - Playing/returning serves into the long pips Some extra tips: - Spin is your ally against pips. The more spin you can generate the harder a time they're going to have to control the ball. Yes, the reversal effect will be greater, but if you expect it then it shouldn't faze you. - Long fast no-spin serves are very difficult to return with high quality using long pips - You don't need to be erratic or play crazy winners. Patience is key. There's nothing wrong with being stable, rallying, and winning because you were more consistent than them. - Playing against pips is not something you can learn overnight. It takes lots of practice to get really good at it, but once you know how to do it, it becomes very easy.

Very good explanation at the basic level. Of course, as the level goes up, the skill applied by the pips player increases - they may chop with the pips - they may vary the depth - they may serve sidespin, so your return is forced to have some, then they put the pips against it and God knows what happens - they may twiddle! Whatever the skill level of the opponent, just assuming that this basic tactic is going to continue working all match long is a little naive. Don't underestimate the opponent, even if they have long pips on one side! So what else can you do? - occasionally go to the non-pips side - the crossover point is always good, pips or not - instead of alternating, continue looping (if you are strong at looping against backspin) - have a good look at how they are adapting, when you reveal yourself as comfortable at the basic level Cheers!

This will be very helpful. Many videos that cover this subject are about choppers, but at my low level in tournaments they tend to be pretty basic get the ball on the table and let the opponent defeat themselves type. The strategies you outline will give me something to think about other than “oh crap I hate LPs”.

Very true. The pips players at my club just get the ball on the table, position the ball clever and occasionally smash the ball when it pops up too high. Usually they're older players as well that get tired easily and don't move very much at all, and stand close to the table. This one guy that's 70+ keeps defeating me this way. Almost all points are unforced errors by myself.

You are so right, they have a problem with technique and are not interested in correcting it. Thanks for the video, used it to win a match last night.

The long pips rubber only make reverse the opponent's ball spin, the top spin becomes the under spin, the under spin becomes the top spin. First we Loop second we chop, first we chop second we Loop and so on.

Thanks. The guy I played against last night did a lot of punching of my shots and the ball would come back low and fast and with lots of wobble. He had a forehand but would basically run around the table with his backhand punch/wobbling the ball back to me. Very frustrating. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again

what i would recommend is to get a high level long pips guy (over 2000 at least) to play against then make a strategy video. Sorry to point out but that kid is hardly a 1500 and that s being generous. There are many good long pips players out there that do very versatile shots even smashes with long pips. That would be more interesting at least for me and higher level players in general

that's the reason why don't do too many sidespin when playing against long pips just make the spin as simple as possible

It’s not skilless >:/. It actually requires lots of practice to use. Also people with pips do know how to do techniques despite them playing pips. Don’t assume if you don’t know what they gone through

This video was more about awkward long pips players (eg: those that dont use technique and just put the paddle in the way), but I know there are some very skilled pips players who either chop or block with them with coached technique very effectively While I dont use pips often, I can play with short/long pips at around a 2000 level so I definitely appreciate how difficult they can be!

Bro this video is a nice guide for beginners, but then again they might not even be able to push low and loop stable enough in the rally. The long pips player here plays very bad and basic with it and you are far better than him so the examples are pretty unrealistic for any match. Normal to better long pips players who play disruptive close to the table (aka not defenders) dont just passively block with it like a newbie, but rather push agressively to the corners, chop-block for awkward spin or even "drive / smash" with it whenever the ball is not super low which is pretty much impossible to block (well). Also they will side-step forhand topspin/smash any higher balls with their forehand which makes the rallys extremely dangerous for you and you cant just relax and hold the rally since then he has a big advantage with his shots beeing easier to land. Also u should not make a short serve to a good disruptive player, he will push/chopblock it easy to a far outside corner placing it very easily whereever he wants making the next ball very hard for u to play well. They also will use spinny sidespin serve variations to ether 3rd ball attack with their forhand or just block ur return to reverse the remaining spin making the 4th ball very dangerous for you while they have to do basically nothing for it. So next time u make a video how to play against "awkward" long pips players take some footage and tactics against this into account, coz anyone can beat a much worse passive player but anyone really using it will be much much harder to beat even with nowdays legal long pips

Utter nonsense. You say "put their paddle in the way". I am sure they would have done more hours than you on the table. It is clear that the guy who uses the long pips in this video has never played with long pips
