    Have a question, you stated at 15:02 that he should keep his index finger more down on the bat because the way he has it would make counter looping and blocking a little unstable. However, during my coaching sessions and during matches, my coach told me that if it helps a lot of people (even the pros) will put their finger more up on the bat especially when playing a forehand loop to put more pressure on the bat, and that you should do it if your finding yourself opening your bat when playing the forehand. Maybe I didn't understand what you meant or what my coach meant, just a little curious cause I'm hearing a contradiction here, let me know.

    Hey there! In terms of pros who do this there are a couple that will occasionally move the finger slightly up but not many. They can do it and get away with it 1 because they're so good it doesn't matter anymore and 2 because they understand when it is and isn't beneficial. Fundamentally though especially at a non pro level it's not a habit you want to get into imo.

    If I push a heavy backspin ball with heavy backspin, it tends to go out of the table. Why does it happen and how can I fix it?

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee4 күн бұрын

    If the ball already has a ton of backspin e.g. it's as heavy as possible you don't want to try and add even more backspin to it because it's going to fly off your rubber and be difficult to control. You can almost "borrow" the spin and just give it back to them. Nice and smooth but don't try to overcook it. Push shouldn't be trying to win a point outright it's just designed to set up your attack so as long as it does that it's a success! In terms of specific technique and if you're doing something wrong I wouldn't know without seeing a video but if you're interested in a match review feel free to join my discord!

    I'm only 2250 but love the game. Lab off helps a lot for me, Lab on felt strange. I have throw down to 1.04 with the Quest 3. My bounce is a bit lower too, I find hitting harder using a faster swing, is better than relying on the bounce in game. Max spin seems essential, I would use lower IRL, but like we see here, the ball already doesn't react as it should with short serves. Frustrating that it's taken so long for the physics to be optimised, but hopefully it will become a priority soon. In the long term, I don't feel the headsets are up to the task yet, so the game will probably peak when the hardware is fit for mass adoption. That's if a competitor doesn't come along with better physics, I'm surprised at the lack of competition, only Tenbillion Table Tennis out there so far, that has a similar list of physics issues.

    Wow thanks Looee!! I will start working on this today :) and submit again as soon as I fix those things. Its great to have a clear path to follow in trainig.. thaanks! The blade its Argentinian, but I think I will try to change it cuz its too heavy (9 layers of wood). Im also going to change the rubbers, probably to some european ones (was considering some Xiom Vega or something like that, I can test m2, razka 9 and pf4 from my training partners) but also cuz here we have high levels of humidity and there are days when its imposible to play

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee5 күн бұрын

    Glad it was helpful and best of luck improving! And yeah 9 layers of wood is a lot. But the Vega series of rubbers is great so I'd 100% recommend it. I used to play in a place with very high humidity and I know sometimes with European rubbers they get very slippery but as long as technique is good you should still be ok for the most part. And then hopefully for tournaments / important matches the conditions are less humid. But yeah can't go wrong with xiom Vega! Those other ones you mentioned are good too all made in the same factory.

    I had this exact same problem where I was pushing balls too much. Many of the pushes he did where prime loop candidates and I think he would benefit on putting it in his mind if its past the 1/3 of the table from the net just loop it. Even if you miss just loop it so he starts getting the idea of attacking instead of pushing and putting himself on defense. I did this and went from 1300 to 1500 in a couple of months

  • @BrunoNeureiter

    5:55 that is not a real problem. Any part of the rubber should impart the same amount of spin. The problem and solution is timing. Hit it earlier and it will automatically hit a lower spot. If the player starts thinking of the opponent's spin, the timing, the point on the rubber, foot placement, etc it's game over. The place on the rubber imo is not a problem (in the push) because the blade can rotate depending on your reach. Timing and angle are key Edit I saw your next point. Pro players don't push with the wrist. You impart much more spin if you get close and just move forward

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee5 күн бұрын

    Of course during a real game you can't consciously think about all these things or you're gonna lose, but during analysis you absolutely have to in order to figure out what's wrong and then fix it in practice. And during the practice it's totally fine to consciously focus on this stuff until you no longer have to. As for the pushing / touching you're right that technically you can get the same spin anywhere on the rubber, but hitting it so far up is still extremely suboptimal. However you are correct that timing is the solution, not literally changing the contact point which I do explain a little later in the vid. But as for why the contact point itself is still bad, firstly by definition if you're hitting super high up on the rubber, you're not gonna be hitting as early off the bounce as possible compared to when you hit closer to the front on the rubber. Because by definition it takes more time for the ball to travel to the back of the rubber. Second, especially on the contact points that were super close to the edge you are going to have a totally different feeling / feedback and reaction because even though the rubber may be consistent a blades sweet spot is not. And third if you're near the back part of the rubber at contact that means you've already probably done most of your motion (extended too early and now made contact after extending, instead of making contact first and then leaving room to extend. Also I agree nobody is pushing / touching by swinging the wrist but I never mentioned / recommend that to begin with. Edit: I had assumed your timestamp was for the forehand push where he's right at the literal edge of his rubber. The backhand ones where he's kind of in the middle of the blade are "fine" in terms of the literal contact point. I'd say even though the contact point itself isn't the issue, it's the symptom of a different problem which is the timing which is why I pointed it out and explained it more later in the video. For example you'll rarely see Ma Long when he's got perfect timing have much variation on his contact point when touching.

    You raise very good points, especially with the idea of going for the loops and if you lose you lose. A lesson I had the coach said go out and miss a lot until it starts to come in. So, in learning something new, you may go backwards for a while. That's all part of it. Another thing with the short game and pushing (Waldner pushed a lot. Nothing wrong with it), and that's trying to manage the short game with fast rubbers and fast blades. It's a double edge sword. The setup that provides power (if you can handle it) in the open rally may be miserable to use in the short game. Do the pros make it work? Yes, but they are pros and that's what they do for a living. They have to make it work

  • @BrunoNeureiter
    @BrunoNeureiter5 күн бұрын

    @@zazenforever4940 It's a lot easier with Chinese tacky rubbers. They have a linear response. Another thing to be aware of is that you must be soft in the hands while pushing

    Probably too late for you to see this, but when using the built in training features (mainly robot), are there any main types of drills (e.g footwork if you have the playspace or certain strokes) that you feel are realistic enough to be beneficial when used as a form of addictional practice for beginner or intermediate irl players. With the controller adapters to keep the same grip of course. Ive had the game for a while but tended to shy away from using it much as even as a beginner i could tell that something about how the ball moved just did not seem right, feeling like there was way more spin on most shots than there should be. The main benefit i see from VR (current physics engine and hardware limitations aside) is that it seems to provide a very accessible form of "on demand" multiball. Once shots become more realistic and i dont have to worry about it maybe giving me wrong muscle memory, ill be happy to start using it more often.

    Man these analysis vids are such a goldmine. So insightful and practical! Thanks so much. I have a quick question regarding service practice. When you practice a serve like say pendulum, do you always incorporate the footwork? Or do you ever save time and stamina and just do reps without quickly getting to ready position? Just curious before I dedicate countless reps😄. Best!

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee8 күн бұрын

    I'd say if the spin and serve itself are already quite good and you're just trying to get some solid reps in then practice getting into ready position with each rep. But if you're still just mastering the serve then you can leave the footwork out until the serve itself is excellent and then slowly implement the footwork. But it's no good to do 500 reps just for the sake of reps. Take your time on each rep and try to make them as high quality as possible instead of just cranking out as many as you can. Practice doesn't make perfect - perfect practice makes perfect!!

    I was enjoying it more, but I think that was before the ping compensation. If both players don't have ping compensation, the game feels closer to IRL for me. I also find similar physics issues, can't do a decent ghost serve, the ball floats longer in TTT, heavy topspin doesn't make it dip late on some shots. Both games are fun, but hopefully they can improve.

    I, too, thought that ELO is exponential. However, ELO seems to have a direct and constant dependency between the rating delta of the two opponents and the probability of an upset, which suggests that it's not actually exponential. Such as "The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player whose rating is 100 points greater than their opponent's is expected to score 64%; if the difference is 200 points, then the expected score for the stronger player is 76%.".

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee16 күн бұрын

    @@alk672 you're correct in your explanation but in terms of the skill gap / skill required to improve I think it's definitely exponential. So for example even though a 1000 has a 64% chance of beating a 900 and a 2500 still has a 64% chance of beating a 2400, the skill difference between 2400 and 2500 is much larger than the skill difference between a 900 and 1000.

  • @Looeelooee
    @Looeelooee16 күн бұрын

    Actually I'll have to look at the data at some point but I wouldn't be surprised if in reality results between a 1000 and 900 are close to 50/50 and upsets between a 2500 and 2400 are much rarer

    No problem! I'd say if you're extremely serious about IRL table tennis to try and avoid too much VR. However a little won't hurt. Depending on how much space you have, the best thing to work on is footwork drills since the footwork is identical in IRL and VR. But try to not build bad muscle memory on the shots themselves.
