Hint-o-rama. Dig out a hole about 4 or 5 times wider than the pot. Make sure it is a jagged or square hole, not a circle. Set it in, with the shoulder of the root (just below the graft) about 3 inches higher than the surrounding soil. Backfill (as you do) with the soil gently sloping down from the shoulder to the surrounding soil. Mulch, keep the are weed free. Your tree will girth out and grow in leaps and bounds. Lots of love! Edit: the square or jagged hole prevents the roots from growing in a circle, like they do in a pot. The roots will penetrate through a square or jagged hole way better.

I just got done potting 11 fruit trees - can't plant them yet because I'm still prepping the site. But I put them in a potting soil mix, mostly organic compost. Then I watched this video again where you advise against doing that. I'll be putting them in their permanent homes in about 1 month from now. I sure hope they make it and prosper. I can hardly wait to get this going.

Highly recommend Cummins Nursery to those looking for bare root trees. They have hundreds upon hundreds of varieties of fruit trees, plus full and detailed information about each variety, including required cross-pollinators, rootstock options, etc. I just received four bare root apples from them this week, and they look amazing. Their prices and shipping costs are also better than many other companies. One caveat, though, is that you have to order early to get exactly what you want. The trees I received in April are ones I ordered last June.

5:33 I've heard it's good to dig a square hole with clear, sharp corners at the bottom, so that when the roots grow to the edge of the hole you dig to plant it, that they are less likely to circle around and more likely to spread out. Dunno if it's true, but seemed to make sense to me. And that's the same with adding lots of compost and nutrients to the soil you put back into the hole you dug. If it's significantly richer than the soil around it, when the roots get to the edge of the hole you dug, they won't want to explore the less nutritious soil and so the root growth may concentrate on the smaller area.

great tips which am sure many people really didnt know a out the grafting top and the pruning as probably they just get planted and nothing else as they think its ready to go! I have taken a few tips and have about 20 apple tree seedlings as have grown them from seed and about 10 pear trees the same way - just need to plant them in our orchard! The seeds are from the trees we have in the orchard so keeping the same/similar variety tree! just got to try to keep the non native grey squirrel and rabbits from digging them up here in the UK!

I am a newer subscriber and enjoy the videos I've seen so far. I just planted a Cosmic Crisp and have been playing around with grafting. I learned a couple things similar to what you talked about. First, if you buy potted trees from nurseries in the winter-spring, many seem to be bare root that were recently thrown into a pot of dirt, but now cost 4 times the price. Second, I learned that it is PAINFUL to prune so much of the tree when doing the initial planting, as the tree becomes so small. I get the need for root and scaffolding branches, but it was sad. Anyway, nice work!

Great video. I just planted 4 bareroot peach trees and used your technique of the coconut core and the Micos. When buying potted trees I like to take an old bread knife and square the root ball off by slicing the sides off to make it square. I saw a youtube on this and did it on some peach trees and it worked well. Just something to consider. Didn't hurt my trees at all.

Information that I need! I would never have been so aggressive with the pruning at planting but I will now!
