I like to cover my late season carrots with leaves then harvest them throughout the winter.

Keep in mind decreasing day lengths affect which varieties you can grow. Some plants run out of growing season if planted in late Summer and there’s just not enough daylight for them, and the soil will be cooler. As a rule of thumb, the same crops will take about 2 weeks longer to mature than if they were planted in the Spring. If possible, give them 2 weeks longer growing time than specified on the seed packet for Fall planting. Luckily green tomatoes are a good crop to harvest too :)

live in florida, so very luck to have a temperate climate. I planted broccoli, butternut squash, zucchini, cabbage, tomatoes , eggplant, 4 different beans, lettuce, carrots, sweet peppers!!!

Weather is flowers and or food there's so much satisfaction in putting these little dried seeds in the ground and watching them grow sometimes within 2 days.

I planted my fall garden today! I still have tomatoes, bell pepper and other peppers going strong. I am in zone 7B and our typical first frost date isn't until November 11. So, I planted collards, sugar snap peas, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots. I ran out of room so I couldn't do broccoli. Thank you Luke and Sindy for all of your posts! You have definitely been a great source of information when I need it!

I live in Ontario. For my fall garden I've planted carrots, parsnips, early potatoes, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, radishes, chard, and arugula. I think I'm going to plant a fresh crop of kale and collards too. Oh, and brussel sprouts. I have a big garden so I actually have more room, but I've run out of seeds!

Just out of curiosity, what date do you seed your garden for fall? I live in Quebec and have intentions of starting a fall garden and my lack of experience with gardening causes me to fear to make a costly mistake.

I'm in midcoast Maine, I planted 3 varieties of carrots and chioggia beets last week. Putting in broccoli seedlings this week, which will get a cloche through October to keep them frost free. Planting peas and radishes once the weather cools down a bit!

I produce food for a year round supply. It's not only good for the environment, but it also saves a lot of money from having to go to the store a lot to get a week's supply of food, or that additional vegetable for whatever you're cooking. More power to the MI gardener to show us how he does what he does!

Love to see gardeners in the garden. Especially after some have given up for the year. I'll put in more daffodil bulbs and garlic later. Now it's lettuce and turnips, radishes and flower propagation, geraniums, daisys, tulips. Thanks for the video, love and peace. Blessings

Hey guys , it's July 5 th 2018 , and we have a garden in already . Potatoes are doing awesome !! We also have in beets , green peppers , cabbage , celery etc . a whole bunch of veggies from the first planting but today I went out and planted carrots and turnip and dragon tongue beans . guess we'll see how it goes eh . Oh ya , I'm in Northern Ontario , Canada but I'm pretty sure everything will be fine . Wish me luck !

Here in the Pacific NW I am planting my first Fall garden. I too planted carrots, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabage, peas, lettuce, and spinache. I only plant what my family eats. I will be planting garlic and other crops a little later. Thanks for you tips on fall gardening.

I'm in zone 10a. Our fall garden is what you northerners plant in the spring. Yankees move down here and try planting in May and wonder why their garden burns up in June. Then they come by my place in November and marvel at the tomatoes, squash, beans, etc. Its been several years since we've had a heavy frost. Nice video, thanks.

Thanks for the encouragement to experiment with fall planting. I dug a sunflower garden parallel to the road to hopefully act as a fence in the future. As a ground cover for this year, in the exposed soil I planted poppies, carrots, squash, zucchini, lupines, and dill.

In Ontario, I LOVE planting tons of spinach in the fall!

Report from a newbie gardener in California. zone 9b. I watch a lot of gardening videos, but I make sure to watch MIgardener. I have soil that ranges from heavy to clay, and the sun in central CA is like Saudi Arabia. I should raise camels. I have been gardening for 2 years now, and have made all the mistakes at least twice. All living things die, it's just in my garden, death arrives early. So, I have built Hugel culture mounds and focused on soil building elsewhere. I'm burying all my fiber. I enrich soil where I plant with store bought soil. I plant sunflowers, buckwheat, cowpeas, and carrots. Carrots do the best. I grow tomatoes and peppers in containers. My onions think I'm a good gardener and they thrive. It's mid-July and I'm going to plant string beans, more cowpeas and always sunflowers. I like the idea of green mulch. I took Luke's advice to use pine shavings as a mulch on edible plants. I started some dwarf Namwa bananas in whisky barrel halves. I mulch these with comfrey and rose flowers. I'm shopping for a grow light to start seeds indoors, so the critters won't eat them, and get an earlier start.

I love that you admit your mistakes....that's a pro-gardener mentality right there! I had pretty bad soil as well (compacted clay). I stopped fighting it and switched to no-till, no-dig, lasagna gardening (essentially layering organic matter on top of organic matter) and all of a sudden, the graded soil didn't matter. Every year got better because my organic layers just built upon each other. I'll never go back to conventional gardening again!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms - I like the "lasagna" term. I understand the layering on top of difficult soil, as I've watched some vids on the topic. I'd be doing the side of the house with that method, in just a few weeks. I'll be experimenting with different ground covers., both annuals and perennials. Bought my first grow lite. I'll be setting it up today.

I've put in lettuce, arugula, beets, celery, chinese cabbage, snapdragons, white radish, crinkled cress, parsley, cilantro, and cover crops of clover, rye, and buckwheat. I still need to get some short-day onions, garlic, carrots, turnips, chard, broccoli, kale, and collards. Thanks for the reminder. Happy Gardening!

I have been planning to plant a fall garden. The poppies are a great idea. I really like that you use Dill and Sunflowers as a border. I see that you plant the marigold in with your tomatoes. I grow Borage with my tomato plants as well. Pollinators love these flowers. Thanks for the info and enthusiasm.

I've been working on what to grow too. Crops that have an extended harvest, add an extra month to the days to harvest in planning. (things like tomatoes, peas, beans, zucchini, etc...) I like how you chose so many root crops to avoid this. I have a mild Winter, and plan to put in peas, turnips, and parsley together. They've been good companion crops in the past.

I'm in Texas. I planted my first fall garden this year of peas, beans, carrots, lettuce, spinach, bok choy, brocolli, and squash. We will see what happens.

That dill is gorgeous. So fun to plant when the weather is cooler. It’s still so hot in central Texas, my zone 8. Good luck!

great points here, Luke! So much that can be planted in the fall, its just deciding what to plant first! More beans, kale, chard for me - perhaps some broccoli, carrots, and sweet peas, cilantro as the weather cools here in So Cal. I'd also like to plant some diakon radishes to break up my heavy clay soil!

CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY i have the same soil type. Ive broken shovels trying to dig down. I didnt dig this year i piled wood chips and decomposed wood/leaf matter, sphagnum peat moss, and dirt from my friend that has a gray sandy soil. I talked to my husband about planting daikon for an area thats REALLY DRY SUPER DENSE clay. Our trees that are a border there grow so SLOW! Have u planted daikon before?

I am doing kale, spinach, lettuce, spring onions, and carrots. Maybe some swiss chard too. I hear cilantro is awesome in the winter too, so I am trying to get some of that going also. Great video as always, thanks Luke!

+mzzflawlessbeauty I'm guessing your collards and kale will be your best success with the Fall planting. If you use green onions, you can experiment with planting the root ends you cut off. If you like parsley or cilantro, it can be transplanted. I like to grow calendula flowers in with kale and collards. If bugs go after your garden, put out an inch or two of cheap corn oil in a small container. I use soda cans or juice glasses. The bugs climb in and can't get out. I have a $Store strainer that I remove the bugs every few days, and reuse it for a few weeks until the critters are gone. I toss the bugs out for the birds to eat them. Eventually, I toss the oil in the trash. Also, put down some loose mulch, once your plants are established, straw/leaves/grass clippings/shredded trees to insulate your soil and I think your plants may survive and thrive longer when the temperatures drop.

Nice video I'm still learning but you give the best advice I can't wait to set up a fall garden well if I can, I'm near Ft. Smith AR so I'm hoping for time to plant some Kale and the like.

It’s June in Kentucky. It’s been colder than we are used to and this is my first attempt at a garden on my own. I am planting two varieties of beans (a bush and pole), 2 varieties of melons, 2 varieties of tomatoes, a cucumber, and then I plan to sow some lettuce and kale mid to late August.

I literally was just thinking before you said it man I need to start wearing my cargo pants when I garden. Makes life so much easier!

I had to leave my first ever garden this spring to move to China for work, but I just finished planting tomatoes, basil, peppers, lettuce, and corn in my sunroom. I was told by one of my Chinese coworkers that they will grow year round in the sunrooms in the apartments. fingers crossed.

Here in New Jersey, I plant spinach in my fall garden, outside in my cold frame. I was able to harvest the spinach all winter long, right thru to spring, which was really cool. I also planted iceburg lettuce, but because of the constant freezing & thawing during the winter, while the plant did not die and did continue to grow, the leaves had a rubbery appearance. I ended up throwing out the lettuce. This fall, I plan on planting the spinach, onions, and carrots in the coldframe. Rob.

Hey Luke, your content is always great!.. I started some peas kinda late, green manure is always awesome in late fall. I also started some Bok Choi as part of a crop rotation. Salad greens in containers. Back in July/August, bush beans did awesome in new ground.

My parsley self-propagated this year which was a nice surprise. My camomile, which I thought was weed and was going to discard it, was even a bigger surprise volunteer plant. Huge success.

Last week, I planted beets, carrots, radishes, fennel, zinnias, green and yellow zucchinis and marigolds. This week I planted kale, peas, yellow squash and a bunch of brassica family.

I haven't ever planted food for a fall garden. I plant in containers. Usually just mums in the ground. This year I will give it a try . Thank you for the inspiration.

Over here in Wisconsin and its Sept 6th. The hot weather is going to break tomorrow with stroms so im going to get the ground ready today and plant the seeds tomorrow before the rain. People think its too late to plant things but tons of crops hate hot weather and its really the best time to plant root veggies/ many greens. I can't wait to have cheep/ fresh radishes, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, collards, chards, onions, turnips, beets, and arugula deep into november!

I’m in Pennsylvania and here for my fall garden I do beets, cabbage, and green beans. Already harvested the carrots.

Wow, I got the seedlings from my local garden shop and I have snow peas, dwarf beans, cabbage, kale, broccoli and carrot seeds. I can't wait to cover the bare ground from a very dry and damaging summer here in Australia. I forgot about pollinator food, so I am thinking russian sage and red poppies would be a nice contrast to each other. I like my veg garden to sit among flowers and flowers always look pretty surround by green foliage.

My fall garden is kale heavy, with school starting soon and husband taking acked lunch, I make 20+ sandwiches each week and most contain fresh kale from just outside my door. I intend to try onions this next year and am now considering starting garlic this year. Thanks for the info and helo from the ann arbor area.

Your videos are so helpful. I like them all, but do enjoy ones that cover broad topics like this one. My fall garden seedlings experienced some devastation by chickens about a week before I was going to transplant. Planning to build a covered rack for them before spring. What remained, was transplanted along with some starters I purchased. Doing well: purple kohlrabi, broccoli, dinosaur kale, lettuce, onions (sets), garlic,, and some weird kind of collard. Not doing so well: carrots and beets. I can never fertilize my sandy soil enough.

So nice to see you planting in the ground instead of wood raised beds. I think that’s what was intended for us to do.

love your video. Mice do not look around from some high advantage point for signs of carrots just so you know. All critters know you have carrots hate to tell you this but if you grow flagrant flowers or garlic or other things that distract the critters it will help. A rabbit enclosure works too or small wire fence depending where you live. I have had veggie gardens that were never touched by anything and others that were raided all the time by every creature in a 1 mile radius so ........distraction is the key. Keep your Bird feeders away from your garden by as far as you can and where you put your garbage cans should be totally clean and non smelly when you have a veggie garden. Peace !!

I always like to see all the insects on the sunflowers. It's like each one is it's on mini-biome.

I'm further south than you in Maryland Zone 7. I always plant Kale, Collard Greens, and Swiss Chard, because they will actually last over the winter. Kale actually tastes sweeter after a few frosts have hit it.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Swiss Chard will overwinter and new leaves will appear in the Spring.

Chuck Brogan Well winter squash is what I was thinking of. You can pick it and it will keep for months. But I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work with chard. Must've been up late that night...lol.

It does work with Chard. Mine was growing through last winter just fine here in Zone 7.

broccoli, chard, spinach, leafy greens, radishes, and herbs are our winter crops in zone 8 and they do well in zone 7, 8, 9

No fall garden for me this year since I'm rehabbing a broken arm and leg. But you've given me great ideas for next year. Thanks.

My fall garden will be full of kale and spinach varieties as well as collards, turnips and, perhaps, beets. I will also plant lettuce and arugula to harvest before frost. Cabbage also does very well -- unless, of course, we have an ice storm of multiple days of really, really cold weather. I typically have kale, spinach, collards and turnips throughout the winter. I will let the cabbages grown until a deep freeze warming (which we don't often get in my part of Arkansas.).

Enjoy your show Luke. I live in Southwest Florida and always am amused by the shows zones 5 and 4 Everything you plant in the spring, I plant in the fall. Tomatoes would never survive a summer here. I do seeds protected and put the plants in in late October. We never get cold or frost. Florida gardening is combat gardening. My bugs drink neem oil.
